Ex-hedge funder buys rights to AIDS drug and raises price from $13.50 to $750 per pill

Just watched a news clip where he was interviewed and he gave the statement:

"If a company was selling Aston Martins for the price of a bicycle and I buy that company and sell them for the price of a Toyota-- that shouldn't be a crime."

Oh and the dude is only 32 years old.... He's done very well for himself lol.

And Therin lies the problem

The morality inherent to health care, is the biggest test capitalism will face (being inherently amoral)

Yeah well hes obviously a fucking shithouse because those two things are not equivalent at all. It's a total false quivalency.

he's basically smearing the previous owner, pandering, polemic, whatever you call it. He's calling the previous price of a pill "moronically cheap" with that statement.

As if anyone is gonna believe THAT. In fact, maybe the *previous* price was driven by market and demand, NOT by him.

(in case you missed Johnxdice9's earlier post about stalking, chasing, Albanian and goats)

ba-dum-tschh

With the drug being on the market as long as it has, the previous price was probably driven down internally by payback of R&D costs and the anticipation an alternative would come along.

Interesting that he rolls it back to the $13.50 price after paying an assumingly "inflated" $55m for it. Seems like an over reaction when he could have just rolled it back to a more reasonable increase justified by the purchase price .. say $27 or $40 a pill ?

yeah, agreed, so he's lying

He knows the story will blow over in a couple of weeks. The price will be over $100 within a year and maybe $700 within 2 years.
Next time he won't be so stupid and apply a more gradual price increase.

lol at unintended consequences. dude shined a big bright light on himself (and hopefully he is hounded and scrutinized mercilessly for the rest of his 'career'), but he also put the spotlight on a subject that needs strong national debate, one that people seemed unmotivated to have until now. the general public is kinda like those stereotypical movie heroes that only goes nuclear on the bad guys after one of them shoots his dog.

You don't need an aston martin to live.

Fuck this guy so hard. He's on the top of my shit list.

Maybe he's just trolling everyone. A bored hedge fund manager sitting around with his partners...'hey, you know what would be funny? Let's jack the price of this drug we just bought up 5,000 percent and watch the collective head of the Interwebs explode...just for fun...Lisa, find that really smarmy picture of me quick and send it to our publicist!!...who wants lunch?'

he just overdid it.

this happens *all the time*. just slow. e.g. this drug was probably $1 or less a year or two before, $13.50 is crazy expensive. $750 was just a bit too far.

Maybe somebody from Big Pharma had a heart to heart talk with him and pointed out that dead men can't spend their money.

(Or maybe they gave him a hidden payment to put it back the way it was so that the outcry would die down quickly because they would lose $Billions if the rule changed to stop predatory practices.)

^^ Yeah, the veterans told that greedy little punk that's not how it's done and he's shining too much light on them.

Hillary then commented and that's the last thing they want, a Dem to come in and start throwing regulations everywhere.

It will be up to $500 a pill in a year or so, just a more gradual increase.
