FINALLY - Lane Sharing is supported in CA

That's a pretty snazzy video - thanks for posting it.

I've started capturing stock and test footage on my daily commute for the video project that Revnort and I are working on. The bummer about the GoPro footage is that the lense makes it look like you're hauling ass even when you're going pretty slow. I've showed footage to my wife where I've dropped it down as low as 10 MPH, and even then she thinks it looks fast - because of how the cars look like they're really moving as they go out of frame. I'm concerned about how drivers will perceive lane splitting in videos because of this - do they just say "See! He's going too fast!"?

Perhaps some audio or subtitles talking about the speed would be useful to head off misconceptions like that.

In the video I posted, that's the one thing I didn't like -- in some places he's splitting pretty fast in traffic that's not very obstructed.

Revnort had the very astute idea of using another cam to show the speedo, and then put that in an inset in the video. That + audio and text will help a lot, I think. Also, just going really slow when shooting. :teeth

Where's the like button for this thread?!

so whats the rule on splitting when there is only one lane. Someplace like the 37 between the napa river and sears point raceway.

Can you ride the line on one side or the other?

It's called 'passing', not "splitting": you can't ride between one lane.

Passing laws apply.

I consider splitting as going between 2 lanes of the same direction. When it's 2 lanes opposite directions, I don't split... nor I would go between a lane and the shoulder.

Short and to the point. It's everyones responsibility. Good vid.

That is the State using some of our tax dollars to protect our asses.

I approve that message :laughing

That should be snow. In movie theaters in LA and may hit some TV too.
Great stuff for us riders.

I hadn't seen mention of the fact that SB350, which attempted to make lanesplitting illegal, was introducted to the Senate by our very own Senator Jim Beale, representing District 15 (San Jose, Campbell, Los Gatos, etc.) (He's @Jimbealljr on Twitter, btw )

I'd imagine that many of us might find that very irritating & would do what we could to ensure that Sen. Beale holds that position for as short a period as possible, or at least gets an earful from his constituents.

So, fortunately it's not going anywhere for now, but it doesn't seem that the bill is completely dead.

There have been several discussions of SB350 here and elsewhere, and Beale has been mentioned several times. It's hard to keep track of all the threads and chat on this. You can check for ongoing updates at the "SB 350 Updates" link in my sig.

ABATE says that Beale is not anti-moto, and that in fact the person in his office working on the bill is a rider. Both ABATE and the AMA have stated that Beale has put the bill on hold to consider the results of the UC Berkeley study that's now in progress, and everyone seems to think he's open to working with the moto community on this.

The current language of the bill is supposedly placeholder language. So no need to push for getting him out of office just yet - it's probably better to work with him on a bill that ends this whole stupid "illegal vs. legal" bullshit. The attempts to outlaw splitting won't stop - so a sensible law is probably good for us. Look at all the cool stuff the CHP is doing around splitting lately - imagine if there was a new law, and the PR/education push that could follow. Potentially good stuff.

Lots of positive things going on right now in the area of lanesharing in CA

The new lanesharing survey is kicking off in the next few days. This is a follow up to last year's survey and is again sponsored by OTS. Last year's results showed us that 80% of riders say they laneshare and 51% of motorists think that lanesharing is illegal. We are very interested to see if all the attention we have garnered from the published lanesharing guidelines results in an increase in the number of motorists who know that lanesharing is legal.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month and we are working on the media messaging that will be going out and we are hoping to include a big push at educating motorists on the fact that lanesharing is legal.

We will see the highway message boards lit up with the motorcycle safety awareness message for several days in May. Currently looking at what that message may say.

How can you help? Laneshare safely. Folllow the guidelines. Get your fellow motorcyclists to do the same. Show everyone in CA that lanesharing can be done safely. Don't be "that guy" that pisses off the masses by lanesharing like a fool and bringing ill will on all of us.
