I noticed over time that foam ear plugs tend to work very well for my morning commute, but often don’t’ seal well in the evening for the commute home, and that’s been puzzling and frustrating me. At first I thought it might be due to different storage temperatures – I leave them in the unheated garage overnight so they’re cold and firm in the morning; they’re in my office during the day so they’re warmer and more squishy at the end of the day. But now I have a new theory – moisture. I take a shower before I leave in the morning, and my ear canals are still slightly moist when I put in the ear plugs, which helps sealing out the sound better. This seems to make sense – wet tissue stuffed in your ears would seal out the sound better than dry tissue. So I just started trying out moistening the foam ear plugs slightly (they turn into wet noodle if you get them wet) in the evening – worked well last evening and we’ll see.

Your head shrinks as you think. You don't think much in the morning, obviously.

"... t'wat did you say?"

I c'unt hear you...

OP: Don't lick your ear plugs *shudder*

Make like Rossi; lick your pinky tips, give yourself a double wet-willie in your ear holes, then put in the plugs (pre-compressed of course)

Perhaps the difference in temperature is affecting how you install them? I always ride with ear plugs, and don't notice much of a difference in the morning. I do notice a big difference when I use fresh plugs, though.

This.

Of course, it's always nice to switch to a new pair. Typically, I can use the same pair for a week before they loose their effectiveness.

I usually aim for a week of use myself. I found that the trick is to roll the earplug between my index finger and thumb before insertion. When I insert the plugs, I tug back on my ear so that they slide right in. Generally go in with no problems; in fact, I have to be careful not to insert them too far with that method.

I prefer anal insertion to keep my plugs nice and toasty warm.

i ALWAYS lick my ear plugs before stuffing em in my ears. and ive also run into different amounts of ease when putting them in between different brands. the ones i got at Albertsons were awesome and lasted for weeks, but the box i got at Target really sucked and hardly last a few days before they no longer hold their compressed shape long enough for me to get em in.

Wrong - your head swells as you think.

Ah, but during sleep, blood pools in the head (not that head!), contributing to morning swelling. During the day gravity takes over, so the net effect must be zero!

Used to do that too until a friend got an ear infection. Doc said don't do that. Licking before insertion has a proper application but this ain't it.

Like someone else said, pull down and out on the ear lobe. Looks stupid but works.
