Folsom Street Fair - World Commentary

Personally I feel public nudity (with attention to hygiene) should be acceptable, but currently it's not by American modesty standards.

this is how it is in Germany for example.. many public parks have women-nudity on sunny days in the summer. Sunbathing... Around corners, near bushes, far on a lawn.. not like on the main path of course.

I don't feel you should be able to ride public transportation naked, and certainly not have sex in public.

And then they don't have that on public transportation of course. For some reason they do sane people stuff?!?!? :dunno

Well to give some levity to this discussion, let me tell you about my friend's experience with Folsom street fair.

His girlfriend (wife now) and him were invited to a barbeque at someone's house that happens to live right above the action. The people kind of failed to mention what the fair was about and my friend (having moved here fairly recently) had no idea. They thought it was a typical street fair.

Until they saw two dude butt fucking right below them. Then some oral. And so on and so forth. They were a bit shocked, to say the least. And happy that they didn't have kids yet because they likely would have been there too. And that would have been a fun conversation to have with the kids.

I get that adults should be able to do stuff and whatnot. But man, who wants to see that shit?
Your friend was set up by his friends. No way that was accidental.

Meh, nice try. Let me be clear. I don't think it's appropriate for people to have open sex in public where children could see it. It has nothing to do with "in front of me or my line of site." I don't want to see you banging a chick, dude, dog, goat, or sex toy. Period. Find a space in private. It isn't a NIMBY thing. It's about common decency and not being inconsiderate.

Let's just say you happen to live on Folsom Street. Or maybe you and your 95 year old grandma are walking down the street (any street) and some guy jumps out started wacking it. Appropriate?
Staying clear of a five block stretch two days a year is too much to ask?

"Inappropriate" is the faux moral outrage talking.

Bay to Breakers and the Friday Night Ride impact FAR more people but the bitching against them falls on deaf ears.

Absolutely not. My comment was in reference to the things I've heard people say about same sex PDA including holding hands. Or just being openly gay in general. Sex in public spaces is taking PDA a step too far for me.

What about a changing room in a clothing store? Or in a car? While it's moving?

When I lived there in the 70s the bath soap commercials often showed nude women's chests. I've often thought that is a double standard here in the States: we show men's naked chests but not women's.

I don't doubt he was set up by his friends.

I agree with what someone else has said. How about completely blocking off the area? Why have it in "public"? You don't see too many people having open sex (and not getting arrested for it) at either of those events. You don't have to have a long, awkward conversation with your four year old about the running Elvi, or why some idiot on a fixie needs to dominate the intersection (this is about the friday night ride, although I understand that this could mean Folsom Street Fair too).

a few years ago, i was driving on 8th Street, going toward the freeway on-ramp, thus toward the Folsom St. fair ... my mom and elderly aunts were my passengers... we saw a middle-aged man in leather shorts obviously on his way to Folsom St. with a hole around his butt, enough to see the hair around this hole. we were laughing our heads off.

not everyone pays attention to the dates of recurring events. it pays to have an open mind ... and also personal awareness that if you are easily offended by potential behavior you might anticipate, to have you and your family steer clear of the area when it takes place ...

Whatever your moral compass, if you don't want to see it don't go. Don't look if you do go.

Shoot, it happens all the time, everywhere. It's usually just half a notch less overt.

I've seen "Full House" even though I did not want to. Am I a victim?

I don't know, were there people sucking each other off in front of you in public? Different moral compass, sure. And don't get me wrong, I'm no prude. But I think there is a moral standard based on a given level of comfort and societal norms. Buttfucking in public is typically considered outside that norm.

It's a well known event at which all of these activities are openly on display. Do not go to the event. In a sense it's a sort of self imposed closed "public" space. It's not like what happens there is a surprise.

I'm with the Yvil one. Don't go if you don't want to see it.

Perhaps outside your personal norm and not something I pursue but still sonething I have seen (and not just at Folsom) in San Francisco.

If I don't want to see a police beatdown I avoid Greater Chicagoland. If I do 't want to see people fucking in public areas I'd avoid SF.

It's pretty simple.

(BTW, your friend should have scarfed a few Twinkies then shot his hosts to death. They played him and there's only one SF-approved answer to that.)

That's great for those people that look at the schedule for it and know what it is. But that little old lady from Pennsylvania that's looking f0orm something to do on a Sunday during her trip........

Why do I even bother discussing things with you? You are a troll and I find your last sentence to be in poor taste.

But everyone from Pennsylvania knows the streets of SF are littered with poo and used needles. Why would granny Penn want to go there? :teeth

Which reminds me. I was talking about an experience I had in SF recently while in DFW last week when a porter (?) overheard and said he'd never go to the city. My response, "Is that a promise?"

As I was cycling to the Ferry Building I realize that only the most tourist-rich parts of town and feces, drugs and piss covered...it just happens that the TL is next to Union Square.

Yeah, WTF is up with that, MysterYvil????? "in poor taste" is well said
:wtf

And besides last I checked... the statistics... the Salinas-approved answers holds ahem, much more weight on that one! :rolleyes

Like it or not it's part of SF hustory. The murders and defense were born out If the same reactionary intolerance.

"Buttfucking" indeed.

Reactionary intolerance because I don't think people should be having sex in public? Give me a break.

Not so much asking you, but if we go with this line of thinking (makes some sense to me), can we apply it to Milo Yiannapolous (sp.) in Berkeley, etc.?

People know Milo's going to be there and speak. If you don't like him and his views, don't go, rather than disrupt and try to shout down? If protestors tried to shut down the FSF....thoughts?

Hopefully not now political, just interested in whether viewpoints stay consistent.
