Free Racing at BW!

It was just an example of the money some people will put into a racebike, whether it is a good platform for it or not. How much money do you think Bobby put into that 500 of his?

Whole class was money, AND bike I raced, Gibson Kevin raced, Bobby's bike, you name it :)

The whole idea of a beginner class is to bring as many new racers and additional race entries as possible, something that AFM currently desperately needs. In few days I will be gridding up on a 10 year old gsxr that set me back $3k. I'm under no illusion that a brand new R6 would smoke me but that in no way would take away from the experience of racing. I believe this sentiment is shared by the majority of the 450 crew. I sincerely appropriate your efforts in protecting the 450 class but I don't believe anyone called it a "cheap class" in the sense that winning championships will be cheap, just that being able to start racing will be inexpensive. That will remain true for many years to come as the long as we have a supply of discarded 600 bikes.

That is true for every class, that one is not special. You can buy that same $3k bike and race 600 class. You can buy gsxr1k for same money and race open class. But you will not be competitive. As competition increases and class grows people start buying more expensive bikes. It is nature of racing.
fyi. we have been racing that class since day one, year after year, won bunch of races and championship.
And we are still racing it.

That is not true on many levels. The tire cost alone is easily 2 or 3 times higher in the middle and heavyweight classes. 600 grids and speeds are far from what is considered beginner friendly. The whole mentality of the 450 cripple community is to foster to new racers, help them get faster and hopefully move on to racing bigger bikes. If someone builds a $20k R6 cripple they still have to be fairly quick to beat the more talented riders, and if they are, they will soon move on to bigger and greater things.

this entire post has nothing to do w/ your original point that you can "grid up" with a $3k bike. the point of entry for cripple and 600/1000/whatever is the same, a cheap used bike. all this stuff is just extras that in no way limits someone from making it onto the grid.

Yes and no. New guy on old bike will not use tires. If you are beginner disabling one cylinder will not make much difference in tire wear.
1000cc yes, those bikes do eat tires :)
I do get your perspective. It is great that you want to get out there and race as cheap as possible. However with time you will get faster and you will want to be competitive. You will not like getting beaten by faster bike with rider same skill as you.
This is our perspective. Some of us have one goal only, to win. Put 2-3 guys like that together and it is game on. Tires are burned, fancy fuel is stinking pits, parts swapping left and right, and so on. Maybe one day when/if you get there you will have different view.
Alex posted exact example when he said he beat me and I went home redid my suspension and kicked his ass. And I kept winning until Tigert kicked my ass. Than I went home and built my motor and started winning again. See, I was perfectly fine with stock bike until those two kicked my ass.
I also spent lot of money to race FP class only to be outspent, out powered and out skilled. I quit, could not afford that pace, went back to cheaper class.

Nope, nope and nope......

Look at the times for the 600 class and open classes, there are racers who are slower than those on 400's and cripples, both novice and expert. While the lower Hp bikes are less likely to put you on your head, there are racers on bigger bikes that will go two weekends without changing tires. On a 400 if I had a race that was important at the end of the day I might change tires and keep the others for practice. But, I wanted to win, not just race so I spent the money for the piece of mind, whether I needed it or not. Started out on an FZR 400 in 2002, taught at track days with a 600 and liter bike. Could have been in the front third of the pack in those classes, but I wasn't going to win and I liked the little bike so that is where I stayed. But Dan Sewell and Mike Lohmeyer, and others over the past years showed the difference between a fast rider and the rest of us. Sometimes they move on, other times they don't..... That being said, if you're having fun that is all that matters no matter what you spend.

I love your brother but he is a freak of nature! He would be fast on a damn Big Wheel! Even uphill!! :laughing

Hopefully nobody got butthurt about my comments regarding 'commuter bikes'. The Hawk, the SV, the FZ07, none of these appeared on the showroom floor of the local motorcycle dealership with the idea of becoming track dedicated machines. The fact that a few talented builders managed to turn them into competent racebikes is a testament to their skills but I guarantee you that even in '99 when Z-man showed up at Buttonwillow with that yellow stock SV, he wasn't doing cartwheels over the Tokico calipers or that pos master cylinder (I went through three different ones before I found one that sucked less than the rest). The frame, suspension, brakes and most components on a 600cc sportbike are superior to the stuff you find on 'commuter bikes', I don't think that's even open to debate.

Z-man won that race at B-willow on bone stock bike. Like you said, I upgraded it after been beaten. More you post more you proving my point, you suppose to prove me wrong :)

Nobody is debating that either. Still all those 600 change shocks and run Ohlins/K-tech/? in forks :teeth
