Fun, beater car for under $5k

what year did the 4th gen prelude go back to a more traditional dash?

All 4th gens had the funky dash. The 5th gen in 1997 is when they went back to the standard dash.

I think that's when the prelude had lost it's image.. It went from a pretty handling focused car -- to something that appeals more to the mass market.

By that time i've moved onto GSRs, which had a much better out of the box package than the 5th gen Type SH.

Nah I'm pretty sure there were 2 dash's in the 4th gen. The first had shitty bar-graph digitals, and sometime later they changed it to traditional-looking gauges. Same dash, just different gauges.

Why would you say a GSR is better than an SH? Quite sure the SH had more low-end.

There is one car I can wholly recommend around the 5k range, but ive been looking for one for myself for years.

Nissan NX2000.

Look it up if you don't know what it is.

SR20DE motor
LSD

One of the best neutral handling cars ever made. Surprised the hell out of the press when it was released. Quietly went away when the world at the time was more focused on import drag racing, and Nissan focused more on their Sentra line.

A rare find and more often than not, enthusiast owned.

You may be thinking of the same dash. They had analog speedo/rpm and digital fuel and temp guage.. All years were the same.

Not sure if/when they changed, but the 92 looked like this, with digital indicators for fuel and temperature. Completely invisible if you had the headlights on (dimmed dash lights) in the daytime. :laughing

Yep . same dash for all 4th gens. There was no refresh.

The type SH's ATTS system was really fun to play with, but not quite an LSD. I've owned my fair share of preludes and enjoyed my ownership thoroughly :) In fact I still have a disassembled H22 here with the ringland defect addressed. :teeth

Forgot to answer your second question.

The GSR is about 500lbs lighter.

Both accelerated about the same, but most found the peppy B18 motor much more enjoyable.

I was doing a lot of SCCA autocross events back then, and you would rarely see a 5th gen prelude, but tons of Integras.

I stopped thinking about Hondas when I moved over to my DSM, and FD turbo cars in the late 90s, but that's a whole nother chapter in my life.

The only car I wish I kept was my 2nd gen GSR in teal green with the B17 motor. for the longest time that was the highest HP per litre motor ever produced. That car, along with my FD were the only cars I would get 'if you want to sell, call me' cards on the windshield.

Wait, that wasn't your car, correct?

That's a pic off an SI model.

I can tell by the power door lock switch. :)

so hard to find a 2nd gen gsr especially with a clean b17 motor...a friend of mine sold his shell but kept the motor...i have a love/hate with my 96 gsr. On its second motor and just can't sell it as i love driving it on the curves.

Why would he list 'smog exempt' as bad haha

As a seasoned CL buyer--and reading between the lines. It's a project truck.

Owned for a year an dumped thousands. Meaning, it's your turn now.:p

Of course its a project. "Leaking transmission, extra transmission included" is a pretty good indicator.

OP hasnt really given a clear indicator of what he wants, so.....

I actually had 2 at a time. A white one and the aforementioned teal one. Both bone stock and still had the factory GS-R badges, and VTEC fender protectors. Had I known what I know now, I would have put them over at my parents house and left them there to sell later.

My internet powers gather that the OP is not looking for a project. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.:)
