Fun, beater car for under $5k

The missus is kind of scared of how nervous the S2K gets at the limit and really isn't learning much from driving it. Maybe I should downgrade to a Miata as well so we can all bromance. :laughing :laughing

That's cool, I may begin looking for a 4th gen lude or a 2nd gen teg. I'm growing a little tired of my 330i, I thought it was fun initially, but it's really too big and heavy. It's time to get back to my FWD shitbox roots, lol.

You're finally facing a bimmer repair bill after leaving it unmaintained, huh? :| :laughing

No matter if it's well-maintained or poorly-maintained, some things just happen. How do cracked head bolts, oil pan bolts, and tensioner bolts sound to you? Just another example of substandard German quality. The Japanese have blown them away for 30 years now.

Okay, so I was on the way to meet up with a guy to go look at a 1996 Miata, but I still had about an hour and a half to kill. I decided to go to PCP Motorsports just to "look" at some bikes. Long story short, I ended up caving and got me a 2014 FZ-09. No Miata for me :laughing

Bought the bike, not the wife. That was a bigger purchase :laughing

Wow she's a stunner! The new yamahaha is alright I guess lol Enjoy your new purchase :party

PS: You should send your wife to take a look at the 96 miata anyways.... who knows, from her womanly charms she might be able to buy the miata for $500! Oh that's right I forgot, all miata owners are gay so never mind haha

Oddly enough, the thought crossed my mind.

How many miles on her?

Just over 2 years, about $75,000, a toddler who gives me headaches and joy at the same time, and 12 marriage counseling sessions. I'd say that's a lot of city miles for her age :laughing

EDIT: Wouldn't trade her for the world <3

i was talking about the bike :x :thumbup

k, no i wasn't

Post up a short term, mid term, long term ride report thread on that FZ09. I've been eyeing em too.

Will do Pete. I can tell you right now, I had a big ass :teeth on my face the whole time riding it home. The bike is REALLY torquey and wants to come up 1st and 2nd gear. I didn't try 3rd. Suspension feels a little soft (as expected), but I'm used to riding my R6. Very easy to ride (if you get used to the torque) and it felt very comfortable on the short 20-mile route I took to go back home.

How'd it feel at freeway speeds (~75 mph?)

It felt good, nothing out of the ordinary. Obviously lots of wind since it's not a full-fairing bike. I haven't taken it past 80, so not sure how it holds up at even higher speeds.

I do want to mention that the factory preload and rebound settings are most likely off. I did some research on it and everyone says it handles MUCH better after you have set up the suspension for your weight. I weigh about 170lbs and the suspension feels a bit soft for my taste. But again, that is partly because I'm used to the R6. Looks like Yamaha might have dropped the ball on the factory settings. I'll keep you updated when I set it up for my weight.

Power is great, even up top. The torque curve is very linear and doesn't drop off even at higher RPMs. It's incredibly light and flickable and reminds me of certain supermotos. In "A" mode (most aggressive), the bike comes up in 1st gear, 2nd gear and if you shifted your weight back, it would most likely come up in 3rd. 65lb ft torque and a wet weight of 414lbs. You do the math.

EDIT: I love the feeling of the brakes. Not super snappy or anything like the CBRs, but it has GREAT feel. Instills good confidence in braking.

Between her engagement/wedding ring, 2014 Forester, furniture spending spree (when we moved in together), and her misc shopping expenses, it comes out to about $50k. The $25k is for pain and suffering :laughing

EDIT: But, FREE SEKS FOR LIFE!

What's a fun car for under 5k? I'm looking at a couple models:

99-00 Civic SI
late 90s Wrangler
Early 00s WRX
Miata
MR2
Early 00s Audis
late 90s 4Runners
late 90s tacomas

You had a mind to get a fun car that you could have flogged for 2- 3 years & sell for what you paid....but instead you financed a new bike...?
Wow....is all

Didn't finance :x

EDIT: Well I kinda did. I put $8k cash and $2k credit card.

EDIT2: Life is short. I have come to the realization that life isn't always about "getting ahead". Sometimes, just sitting back, enjoying the little things is what matters. YMMV.
