Go Pro VS Contour HD

Keep in mind that VHOLDR makes two versions of the ContourHD. One is only 720P resolution and the other is 1080P resolution. Only stating this becuase my 1080P
ContourHDs video is much better then the GOPRO or the 720P version. Also i never had any issues when i used mine with vibration while mountain biking.

I'm stoked... I just ordered a Christmas present for myself. I got the motorsports package. I can't wait, been wanting this thing for the longest time!:thumbup

Just curious. Would I be able to use the Motorsports package go pro on a jet ski?? I know the housing says its water proof but I thought id ask anyways since there is a "surf" package too. I'm thinking the only differene is the mounts.

I'd use the suction cup mount if I did this... I just don't wanna destroy the camera if it were to get "wet".

The housing is the same. I'd use one of the permanent mounts, though...

Hmm.. Maybe I'll reinforce it some other way. I'll be in Negril, Jamaica for our honeymoon in April and it will just be on the rental, not my personal jet ski.

you could use it on a jet ski, but use a tether.

Oh sweet, forgive me for asking but if I'm going to a sporting good store or along those lines where would I find that at? What are they typically used for?

i use the stock ducati helmet holder cable, you could make one from
simple supplies from a hardware store. REI or Any Mountain may have some thing like that.
here's another gopro vid for those that were asking.

i bought the contourhd 1080p off of ebay, new unit for 220 shipped. i think the ones rei had on sale were the 720p verison. i then went to http://www.xtremevu.com/ for a really slick mount that's pretty versatile he also has the water proof cases. haven't had a chance to try it out yet as i'm still shopping for a bike :rofl

I hear Ninja 250 and SV650s are the best motorcycles in the world for new riders. :teeth

:ride I've actually been riding off and on for the past 10 years. This time I'm in search for a supermoto. Specifically an aprilia sxv :D

Anyone else have problems with excessive vibration noise on their Contour GPS? Example:

I mean, really - that's fucking annoying.

I've tried the camera on a couple bikes with the same result: at certain frequencies, parts on the camera buzz and loudly and sort of ruin the audio on the recording. Do I need to get out my tuning fork and only ride at speeds that produce consonant vibrations or what?

I figured out that much of the noise in the video above is from the buttons on the camera. However, after taping them down with gaffer tape, I'm still getting really unpleasant buzzing noises on the Aprilia,* which obviously is a more vibration-prone bike than the I-4 in the video above.

Since I've seen lots of other buzz-free Contour videos shot from liter twins, I've concluded that there's something unusual about my camera. I've posted on Contour's support forum and we'll see what they have to say about it. It seems like a few people have exchanged their cameras for the same issue.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

* you know, in addition to the unpleasant buzzing of the engine itself.

How about you buy a bike that isn't a huge pile of shit? :laughing The Aprilia's a bit better than the Kawi, but come on now. :laughing

(Seems like contacting them is the right idea...post up if you get it sorted :) )

Vibration cutout

I too have had vibration problems with contours. Older models would just shut off mid-session (they claim it was a loose battery) and my 1080p does the same thing, though less frequently. At least now you can see the video until it dies. Its too bad because the picture is great. Wind noise I helped with tape and lowering the attenuation, but I don't get that harmonic effect.

You can also try the remote mic trick, but you'll void the warranty.

I would definitely contact contour, they need this feedback!

Hey, that's the smoothest-running pile of shit I own. I didn't even bother testing the camera on the DRZ.

To Contour's credit, they replied to my post on their support forum right away and suggested that I start a ticket. I did and got an immediate response, as follows:

Hey Rumpy,

I’m sorry to hear about the rattling noise on your camera. If you have tried taping the buttons (including the back locking button and the “1/2” button) then I definitely believe it would be a good idea to get you setup with a replacement camera. If you can provide me with your shipping address I would be more than happy to get this taken care of on my end right away.

Thanks for working with me on this. I look forward to hearing from you!

Regards,

I did not try taping the 1->2 toggle yet, so let me try it on my commute tomorrow and we'll see what we get. Anything else I should test?

I appreciate Contour's willingness to work with me on this issue. I hope that the problem is simply that the buttons on my camera are extra-loose for some reason. Presumably if this problem stemmed from a design flaw, it would have been discovered during the testing phase.

Best,

Rumpy

My feeling is that even if taping everything works, it's still unacceptable, and that's what I'm getting ready to reply tomorrow. If they're still willing to swap cameras, I'll give it a try.

Older models would just shut off mid-session (they claim it was a loose battery) and my 1080p does the same thing, though less frequently.

They seem to have solved that problem. There's a big retention clip on the battery in my GPS version.

I recently got the Contour GPS and haven't noticed vibration noise yet, but maybe because it is drowned out by deafening wind noise. So far I have tried a helmet mount (most wind noise...probably because of the fairing) and then over the weekend I tried their rollbar mount strapped to a frame slider. It did seems like the delivered mounts would allow some movement of the camera because of the rail mount being a little loose in whatever base it is in.

The rollbar mount comes with the tripod mount, and that whole assembly tightens down securely.

After further back-and-forth with Contour, I tried taping _all_ the moving parts on the camera down - the rotating lens, the record toggle, the 1->2 button, and the rear door lock. That completely eliminated all the buzzing and actually produced excellent audio when mounted behind a windscreen using the Panavise suction-cup articulated mount.

I've asked the Contour folks to definitively answer the question of whether this is simply how the cameras need to be prepared for use in motorsports, or whether my camera just has floppy parts.

Since the issue is solvable with some redneck engineering, it's not a deal-breaker, but it does make it clear that there is room for further improvement on future models.
