GS500 build thread... cf tanks, internal supercharger, etc

First of all man, ignore the Nay-Sayers you are doing something crazy, but in a good way. Second of all holy crap, you do some awesome work, you have inspired me to try to switch my old hawk from carb to EFI, I have been looking into the megasquirt 2 as my control unit.

The megasquirt units are pretty awesome. Always happy to share my experiences with it if you have any questions.

you crap ain't wierd. :thumbup

(I liked the twist clutch thingy)

OP: here's one for you too... :thumbup

Question: what would be the benefit of converting a bike from carb to EFI? Is it something that could be done to ANY bike?

Just about any bike CAN be converted, depending on how far and ($$$$) you want to get into it.

Advantages: Fuel Saving, Power Gaining, Ride quality(smoothness of power), and down right tuning ability. Want more or less HP/Torque. Not much of a problem (within reason of engine build specs of course). And in some major cases, reliability. There's plenty of other reasons as well, but this is the main goals of those who do switch from carbs to FI.

Hmm, interesting. I guess something else I should think about doing to my Vulcan. Who wouldn't want a little more power and better fuel economy, even in a cruiser?

Sure, but be prepared. It can get pricey once you get involved. In some cases modifying the motor just to get a crank or cam signal (for the ECU to reference for cylinder order and position) can be a pain in the rear all on it's own. Again though, it depends on how far you get into it.

I'm anxiously waiting to hear when mllcb42 is going to be firing his bike up. Honestly, I'd love to be there, but that might not be possible.

Hoping to be able to fire it up Sunday or Monday. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

geezus, that soon?

What does the MS2 need for signal reference ?

It's not a simple process. You need a throttle body set up properly sized for the motor, with injectors, etc. You'll need a way to attach them. You'll need a fuel pump to feed them. You'll need a gas tank that can accept a fuel pump. You'll need a multitude of sensors, etc. For my project, I've added a tps sensor, wideband 02 sensor, map sensor, and an iat sensor. Then you need the ecu itself.

what clear did you use?

haven't cleared anything yet. The pipes got an extra layer of carbon and were heat shrink wrapped to ensure no possible leaks(they were sweating a bit when I was running water through them before). The tank and seat cowl were sanded down then got a light coating of resin to fill any imperfections.

please post youtube video with good sound of the start up when you get it all put together, we're all waiting anxiously, thanks mllcb42!

To us old motor heads this thread is better than porn. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see and hear the video.
