Helimot moving out of state

this is just terrible. CA sucks f/businesses. My Dad gave up & closed all 6 of his local businesses between 74' & 84' citing, "bad business climate, bad taxes." Retired in a no-upkeep apartment....

Can't say I blame him/others/Helmut either....someday when the tax revenue goes to ZERO maybe someone will say....
how come?
Maroons....

Anyone who beats their chest saying that CA is pro-small business has been living under a rock.

CA has been anti-small business for about 2 decades.

Oof. Been wanting gloves for a while, guess this is my cue.

Bummer to read, but hopefully he kicks ass wherever he ends up. Helimot is a great friend and I'll miss him in CA. He's kept me and countless fellow racers safe for decades.

CA is a mess of a state. It's a mess due to the leadership (all of it). Those who vote here, eschew political dogma and just vote incumbents out of office. That will at least start a change.

Amen but you know that will not happen.

You know Helmut has to be around late 60's or early 70's (yea I know he don't look or act it). I knew him from his days at the Oakland Rd location, maybe it is just time to take the money and GTFO

Only about 42% of people who could vote actually voted in the last presidential election. In off-year state and local elections in California the percentage is MUCH less.

Which begs the usual question: how many of those whining and moaning will actually ever do ANYTHING?

In California you can register online and have the ballots mailed to you, with a stamped return envelope.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting you vote without at least doing a little research into what you're voting on. I'm glad lazy, dumb people don't vote: I vote for them.

Cold Springs

My plan is to relocate/retire to Reno next year:cool.
So I guess going to Hong Kong California will cost the same as my trip to see the Hong Kong babe cost last year?

Damn F...Book must have let them know my ethnicity, I have to put a stamp on my ballot :twofinger

Have The suit, mostly unused, so need to get his gloves. Helmut led ninjaspicey and myself on a ride in the Santa Cruz Hills and we relocated shortly thereafter. She tried to total his 650 Cagiva with an ass-pack at the end of our ride :rolleyes . Helmut was gracious and took the blame: thumbup

I was there today. We will still be able to do business with him after they close the Fremont store.

Ah, the internets.

Awesome :) Thanks for the update. Did he hint at where he was moving to?

Cyberville.
I'll see him again next week. We should have a meet there then go for a ride in the next few weeks.

California is already a third world status.
Funny thing is there are entirely too many stupid people who don't realize Socialism doesn't work.
The left only want to take the middle classes money and give it to the meatheads who want to work at Taco Bell and try to raise a family of 4 kids on it.
Since when do you owe someone who makes poor choices in life a free ride?
If anyone can come up with a good reason why the middle class should foot this bill, please I'm all ears.
This right here.
California is not small business friendly.California is a state that wants to help everybody that does NOT want to help themselves and suck the life out of people who do..
How many times does socialism have to fail before folks learn it does not work?

This is one of the most stupid threads I've ever read on BARF.

Helimot is free to relocate anywhere in America to produce their goods. And so they will. Good luck to them. I know Helmut has run an honest business and is to be commended for it

Regardless, California is doing many of the right things. It leads in many segments of commerce and this hasn't happened by accident. No state is perfect, but from my various interstate tours over the years, .... you move, you're going to gain some, but you're going to lose quite a bit as well.... California is definitely not 3rd world status.

I'm guessing you're not a business owner in CA, as Helmut is?

Surprise surprise, a comment thread about one of my favorite people ever going moving out of state turned into a slapfight confusing and conflating a bunch of terms.

  • Is California socialist? No.
  • Is socialism always inept and bureaucratic? No.
  • Does having things like a competent government-funded health system mean you're a socialist country? No.
  • Is California using a fucked up system of wannabe-socialist bureaucracy watered-down and ineptly run by plutocrats? Yes.

Anyway, now that we can all agree on that last item: Helmut and Linda are amazing, and frankly I wish they'd been charging way more money for their services. Last year I finally achieved my dream of buying a Helimot suit (snuck in just before the deadline), and honestly for the quality I would've paid at least a grand more. For a full custom suit of the quality he makes . . . it's unreal. I'll miss stopping by the shop at the end of a Palomares or Mines Road run and shooting the shit. I wish them the best of luck and will be buying at least a couple pairs more gloves before they go.

well said jeff!

His business is literally across the street from Tesla. He would do good to sell the land / building for $$$ now before Tesla officially becomes the next Enron. He should open up shop in Concord, though NOT OUT OF STATE!!??? I don't blame him though :(

Playing devils advocate:
When you bring up Tesla, you also bring up a company that manufactures in California despite the California being California. Zero Motorcycles assembles in Scott Valley. I got a tour of Vintage Electric Bikes in Santa Clara and I was surprised they assemble all there bikes in there facility.

California does have a lot of rich customers. Is it the same in Nevada? Its hard to try on a suit if you are not in the state. Aerostich, tours around with hundreds of suits and does custom fittings.

Per Helmut, they'll be open in their current location until the end of June, and will be moving out of state (destination currently unknown) after that, as it's become too difficult to do business in California.
