Hipster Moped Rally

you know what's so fucking cool about those shitheads that are riding those mopeds? they take a 30cc engine... they port 'em, they bore them out, they put a bigger carb on them, they put a lighter flywheel on them, they put a pipe on them, they put drop bars on them, they put sticky tires on them, and they have a fucking blast making them as fast as possible and they don't look back.

and then faggots on 600 four strokes that they don't even change the oil on make fun of them because they are on pussy bikes... retards.

anyone who races out anything that they own is cool with me. all the rest can eat shit.

huh... usually when I race out stuff... I end up eating shit. :/

I had a moped in high school. Bought it used for $100, put 20,000 miles on it, sold it for $100. Wonder what happened to it. Sure would be nice to see it again.

Do you really believe that even 25% of the hipsters riding around on a modified Puch moped did any of the mechanical modification themselves? I love it when people tinker with stuff and really make it their own but come on dude, the people riding around on these hopped-up 2 strokes just bought their fucking mopeds from 1977 Mopeds in the Mission and chances are they paid pretty good coin for them too.

You talk like you know "sheet", REALLY? Have you talked to any of these MOPEDoofuses? You think they even change the oil on their MOPED???

Newsflash.. most of the time these craps are being garaged in a garage paid specifically by mom and dad while the kid is studying at the Art Academy. No they don't do anything mechanical themselves, EVERYTHING is done for them at the shop on 16th at Mission next to the old theater.
True some of them actually do racing on one track that organizes this.. but making noise on city streets and then not being able to take-off at the next light is hardly racing.

Exactly what the poster below says, too:

I think the moped crew is cool, even though I hate the hipster look and group mentality.

I saw a huge group of them at Buckshots, and it looked like fun. Way more people than at a Barf meet.

I had a friend who built and worked on mopeds on his house, with all his roomates, their place was crazy, little moped engines everywhere! The kitchen table, shelves full of parts, the hallway, you could barely walk in this dudes place!

I think mopeds are cool for the city and am thinking about buying one, it's all 2 wheels wheres the love barf?

Wrong.

Most of these live outside, chained to the most immobile object.

The shop on 16th is closed now. The way these things stay running is people get together and help each other out with problems. You know, like a tight-knit community that shares the same passion? Sound familiar?

I GUARANTEE there is a HUGE % discrepancy between the people who wrench on their mopeds and the people who wrench on their bikes. Know why? Because if you can't wrench on a moped, you won't be going very far.

As for noise, I have one word to say. Harley.

Wrong.

Alrighty then, I'm wrong. At least on the shop. But then how come I don't see most of them mopeds outside? Then how come I've spoken with a number of owners who have them garaged?
BTW you're crazy if you think they won't be jacked one way or another if they lived outside. Probably just 10% of them do.

Great.. I have two : Farters, too.
And three: Don't like.

And all motorcycles live inside, and theyre rarely ever stolen :rolleyes

You may not like them, but your statements about them are not an accurate reflection of reality, they are exaggerations made with insufficient factual knowledge which have biased your views. Substitute moped for moto and it could be posted in any cager moto-bashing rant.

As far as seeing, its largely a perception/attention fallacy. Ever notice how when you are thinking about something, like a certain moto for example, you "see" a lot more of them on the road? Before I knew about mopeds, I "never" saw them on the streets. If you try to, you'll notice them.

Please. And this relates how? "inside motorcycles" are also stolen in some percent, whereas "outside motorcycles" are actually stolen in a larger percent. That's why I don't think most mopeds live outside.

Wrong.
Exactly because I do ever notice this effect, I correct my thinking due to that. I notice all the quiet BMW twins, stock SV650, and Kawi ZX-6E.
You're basing your assumption on the fact that I have not done that, therefore your statement about this is completely wrong.

You hate/are not at all interested in mopeds, therefore are much less likely to "see" them. I was into them for a period, and during that period, saw them all the time. I am now no longer interested, and rarely do. Your brain has limited processing power, so unless you are ACTIVELY trying to find something, or there is something internal guiding you to "search" for them, they'll drop off your radar.

It is also impossible to say "most are inside" when you have no knowledge about their numbers or their locations. This weekend was an every-other-year event and not an accurate representation of city numbers.

It is also impossible to say what I actually "see", when it is *I* seeing it and not you.

I am puzzled by the fact, that you're telling me that I'm not seeing mopeds, when I my first post in this thread indicated that I am, in fact, seeing them.

Haha :facepalm

My Suburban is hungry, maybe I'll take it to the City and feed it some mopeds.....:twofinger

Semper Fi! :thumbup

Well if you see them everywhere, how are you claiming they are all indoors?

well, I'm mostly on yr side (although I do think those things sound awful and this is coming from a guy that started riding on Vespas). but I'm sure you've also noticed that the ubiquity of those mopeds has gone down since that shop closed. so yeah, dedicated subculture, but definitely think the herd's been culled by the loss of a place that could take care of yr shit if you couldn't.

I haven't noticed too much, since it has only been a few months. I'm sure there are people who have sold their bikes cause they broken and didn't have the resources to get them fixed, but overall, the people who have them cause they like them (and not just the subculture) are way more technically savvy than your typical cbrrgixxrr100000 owner, who needs a shop to service their chain/change their oil. I guarantee if you needed to premix every motorcycle, there'd be a profitable business selling it already mixed...

Whoa, I know nothing about mopeds in the city. I don't go to San Francisco. I just wanted to complain about the mopeds in my lane (well it was a single lane road but they were on my side of the lane).
