How-To: 2003+ Intake Cam > 2002- SV650

Ok , do you have any gen 1 intake cams ?:)

waking up a dead thread here......

I have a second gen DL650 now, would a cam swap on this make a difference or are they they good ones in there already?

God darn it, who knocked? This was a hot thread back in the day, lol.

...it's all John's fault....lol.
As I recall the DL had slightly different cams but I bet if you went over to advrider and asked someone would have a answer.

It would improve higher end power and give you less low range. That motor is a tractor motor. With the cam swap it would be more like a turbo tractor motor.

As someone who did the swap, it really makes a difference. A little fueling bump and the cams amounted to 8 true HP bump on the dyno for me. These cams were hard to find then, and I'm sure they are hard to find now, but if you roll the swap into a valve service it should limit the cost.

It definitely livened it up for me. I didn't notice any bottom end loss, but the top 2000RPM are definitely stronger. I later installed SV velocity stacks which improved the last 1000RPM so that instead of falling flat it keeps pulling linearly to redline.

For sure, I ran the cam swap when i was racing SVs and it was good for 8 HP and better top end. Eventually I got some pistons, Webb cams, and degreed the cams for a truly hot motor that tended to walk bearing out of the cases.

great replies, good stuff to know. I'll be installing a Factory Pro ignition advance key on the flywheel soon with some other minor improvements. I've always liked the 650 motor since it first came out

Throw that shit away. We ran enough dyno runs to decide it wasn't worth it.

Cheap horsepower? Buy new head gaskets, remove the middle layer, use coppercoat, and install.

Like Moses coming down from the hill.....

I have a 2008 wee
I have a love hate relationship with it...
Love
It is setup ergonomically perfect for me, is cheap and easy to maintain, is bulletproof reliable, quiet, easy to ride, handles well enough for current usage.
Hate
The looks, the sound, the visceral vanillaness.

I keep upgrading things hoping to fall more in love with it, maybe more hp will help? LOL
But it wont change the fact it is a wee.
Sigh.

:rofl "Limping in from the bar."

The VStrom sounds like the SV. everything you said about it applies. I could go faster on it at Thunderhill than my Tuono, but it was still an SV.:laughing Still have one twenty years after my first.
