How-To: 2003+ Intake Cam > 2002- SV650

Yeah those are my marks made by following the original post.

The 2 on the exh cam is correct. The timing looks correct according to the pic ( first pic) as it is in the pic. The intake looks correct. SHould be good to go. If you download the manual they have a diagram of the lobe location at TDC that is very good.

I was looking for it in the manual I downloaded, but I didn't see it, I may have overlooked it.

Never mind, I was looking in the wrong place. I found it, and it does look how mine looks now.

ok guys...one question please! front is fine but is it possible for rear intake1r to be half a tooth above the head?i thought the 1r should be flush.....only way to make it look right is to rotate clockwise one valley if that makes sense.and yes mark is on -F,360 from front tdc.... ?!

Look at it directly from the side and see which way it is going. It's almost certainly not in the middle. Those pressed on cams are never exact, often will be off a bit.

Or take a short straight edge, set it on the machine surface of the head (where the valve cover rests) and hold it up to the cam. If the motor is in the bike it's hard to see from the side on the rear cylinder IIRC.

Yep, I agree on that one. My SV made a lot more power with the cams than without (with full Yosh, reasonably jetted carbs).

My recollection is that the valve clearance barely changed, too.

sv cam setup

hi guys
ive just been reading this article and have set up front ones fine,but im struggling to set up the rears,the valves are hitting the piston,im not sure if ive got markings correct,can anyone shed some light on this...thanks

Need more info or pics. I assume you mean when you turn it by hand. You sure the cam chain isn't binding/bunching?

Remember to turn the motor one full revolution after installing one set.

Does anyone have this thread backed up as a PDF or know how we can get the images working again?

Bump from the dead. Curious about this, but link is now dead (go figure 11 years later). Does anyone know how to tell visual differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2 cams? Or just measure lobes?

They are stamped on the back of the cam gear.

2nd gen INF is F and INR is H

Gen one

A=INF
B=EXF
C=INR
D=EXR

03 and up sv650

F=INF
G=EXF
H=INR
J=EXR

So don't see anything stamped into the back of the cam gear, but the cam itself says INF, assuming that means intake front. But it also has a lone C stamped into it (180 degrees opposite).

Is this a first or second gen?

Edit: also just noticed it has F stamped on the cam itself by the gear.

Sorry, been so long. The cam gears are all the same, the stamp on the end of the cam is the identifier.
