I failed the DMV renewal test

Yeah. Less beurocratic red tape...until it's not.

Mine was about expire as well. I think I did it a couple months before it expired.

I had a clean record. I also got my M1 in 2007, so at that time I had to take a written that was 1/2 regular and 1/2 motorcycle specific. Maybe having taken a written more recently, even though it had been 14 years earlier, made a difference.

Yeah, maybe. Mine was first in 2003 and I had to do the C and M Test both completely both times I did the written? I didn't get a half & half. Maybe it depends on the DMV you go to? I pretty much always use Novato or Corte Madera. Never the City.

When I got my CDL, they surprised me by saying I needed to retake all my other endorsement tests! 80 mf'ing questions!!!! Thank God I didn't add hazmat to my list!

They even had a clerk change out while I was taking the test, and the new one was wondering what was going on since I was testing for so long! Haha!

Darn lucky I passed. ;P

So maybe at renewal I will take the test but when I got my real ID no test was given.
Thanks for the heads up and where in the lane the test wants you to answer.

My daughter failed her driving test 4 times because she has anxiety. She'd drive perfectly when she was in the car with me but with a stranger she'd freeze up and do something wrong. Her !5th test ride, the check driver was an ex Marine and he understood her issues. He took the time to make her feel comfortable and she passed easily. I'm grateful for his patience.

Get a copy of their handbook, read it and then use their answers to pass the their test.

I learned this the hard way, like many others here.

Exactly: Don't give'em the right answers, give'em the ones they want. :x

To be fair, getting a license in this country is too easy because fReEdOmS!

My mostly straight A high school daughter might disagree. It took her 3 times to pass the written test and she just failed her first attempt at the behind the wheel test.

Yeah, mine was doing fine with me, but got pretty nervous with the DMV evaluator. They had to tell her to stop for a stop sign she was approaching as she wasn't slowing down for it. That was an automatic fail.

I must be the odd ball here, I disagree that the center of the lane has (functionally) reduced traction. At intersections and parking spaces, yup reduced traction, but in between intersections or on highways and freeways not anything to worry about.

When changing lanes, we have to ride across the center of the lane(s) right? Have you ever lost traction because of that? I never have.

On curvy roads I'm an outside - inside - outside kind of rider. Never lost traction on these kinds of roads either.

Are there times when the center should be avoided...sure. After heavy winds and / or rain, certain roads have gravel problems. But on 101, 280, 880, 17...nope, I'll use the center when traffic dictates it (safer to do so).

I usually avoid the center in traffic because I want to use the space between lanes for an escape route, and riding on the side of the lane makes it easier to get to, plus it's easier to see hazards ahead, but not due to the theory of reduced traction.

Hey!

Former. Former Marine. There are no exes.

So, does that mean you can't ride right now? Or is your license still valid?

Still valid until 2023. He also told me I can return at any time to take it again. Just walk in, go up to a computer and take the test.

Hmm, I thought I could renew online. What's the rule about when you need to take the test?

Yes I've been renewing online forever, but I am turning 53 this year so maybe I've hit the mark.

I think there's a big difference between the center of the road in general and at a stop. At stops, anything leaking from a car is going to pool up. And I never encourage sitting directly behind a car at a stop. You should be thinking about an escape route.

speaking of logical fallacies, how's the camEro?
Funny you ask, started it for the first time in about a year yesterday. Have about a pound of rust fly out the exhaust every time it sits this long in this place which is fun. Free weight reduction I guess. That stop leak i threw in the coolant system to seal up my cracked deck sealed everything except what I put it in there for. Had to take my water pump (electric) apart to get it to work again. Tried to hit it with my 24v power tool battery before doing so but all that did was break one of the magnets inside :laughing. Still works though so that's cool. Probably take it to the track in the next few weeks to see if I can blow it up finally. If it lives after a couple passes on the 350 pills i'll up it to 450 and see what happens. Thing just won't die.

Ya agreed probably no major traction issues outside of intersections in the middle lanes but there are more random objects in general like nails or dead animals, etc. Centering the bike up where the vehicle in front of you has one of their tires makes avoiding a last second object in the road more likely, especially if you can't see around the vehicle in front of you and traffic makes a safe following distance not really practical. That being said I don't think there's a catch all "you should ride here", for me it varies depending on the road and conditions.

I have yet to meet a Marine who isn’t also an awesome person.

You said you were getting a real ID for the first time, right? That's why you had to renew in person.

I learned this the hard way, like many others here.

Long ago when I last took my written tests, they allowed you to have the DMV Handbook with you (aka "open book"). Is that still allowed or was it just my DMV that did it?

I didn't have to take a written test when I renewed to the Real ID driver license.

Weird, I did, but my license was also expiring so maybe that was the difference?

I just got my RealID driver's license for the first time yesterday. Yep, I did have to go in. No test given except for eye test and check address, and legal identifying docs.

I proactively signed up to do it because my license was set to expire next month and I never got any notice. So @Eldrich, that kind of debunks the renewal aspect, eh?

I haven't had to take test or show up in person for renewal for a LONG time now. I think it's because I have been a good boy and didn't get tickets and stayed out of court. Getting old is weird!

I assume this is also why I have to take the knowledge test.

I got the real ID for my license renewal last year and I didn't have to take a written test. :dunno

Then must be the renewal due in 2023. I arrived a year early and she said I could go ahead and renew.
