I failed the DMV renewal test

Hmm, I thought I could renew online. What's the rule about when you need to take the test?

I think two things trigger a written test on renewal:
  • points
  • age 70

I must be the odd ball here, I disagree that the center of the lane has (functionally) reduced traction.

You don't think it could extend stopping distance even a foot? I observe a small amount of oil in the center of the lane, and more heavily at a dip or bump. Not enough to alter my lane position though.

Maybe there is a tird trigger, like a lotto. I got my Real ID and had not to take a test.

The day finally came, after failing the test online, and not doing awesome at every practice test, I went in to renew my license. I was going to simply tell them forget it for now but decide to try one last time. I passed. What a relief.

DUH, how stupid do I feel? Really stupid.
Went in to get a real ID and renew my license. They said I needed to take the 25 question refresher. I passed the vehicle with flying colors, and missed the moto test by what felt one question. I feel like an idiot.
Planning on going back next week.

Yeah, it isn't uncommon. Happened to me a few years ago. I went to the taco bell in the parking lot, ate some terrible food with a copy of the book (tested first time without reading) and went back and took it again to pass.

Super annoying because it was mostly like new laws that don't have anything to do with me that got me.

Questions about, can you smoke with kids in the car? What is the proper seatbelt facing diagram?

Muthafuckas, this is CA, I quit smoking like 12 years ago ,and I don't fucking have kids, I don't know this shit. I will talk turn protocol, safe stops, traffic signals, and safety signals all damn day, assholes.

:laughing

You will get it next time around for sure, Bro.

Funny. Those questions are hard and not intuitive! Same thing happened to me. To my surprise, the DMV lady behind the counter winked at me, told me the right answers and said go over there and do it over. I passed the second time and got my renewal. I'd still be there flunking the test over and over if she had not taken mercy on me.

Holy shit, Teddy Broosevelt. I didn't see the 1 Year Gap from start to finish. The mind boggles.

:laughing

1 year is light years in my world. 20 years of permits (or more) and I finally took my test in PA on the same exact year and model of my first bike in 1996; a 1994 CBR600F2. Same color and all. I've taken the test to many times for the stupid permits...maybe took it 10 times or something and STILL, the riding questions are almost fully backwards.

My license test last April was pretty funny. The evaluator had the same bike as I was testing on as his first bike (94' F2, white, black, red). We rapped out about it then rode to the test site, up a hill walking pace while I rode next to him and talked. By the time we got to the top of the test area lot, the clutch was a bit too warm. Not a problem...plates were runout from the previous owner, but this wasn't gonna be hard. Right. Little did I realize the test site had about 15 degrees of slope north and about 12 degree slope west. The cone drill was tough, with the clutch having almost no freeplay / slip. The box was the same. I made it, but not without footing a few times. Totally embarrassed, I rode back to the evaluator and said "sorry, it's not so much the clutch...I don't know what it is". He said, "oh, the lot's sloped 15/12 degrees in two directions. I can't remember the last person who's passed on this site. I tell everyone to go over to Norristown.". "Great" I thought...waste of time. He followed his comment up with "don't worry about that though. You passed when we were riding up the hill. It was obvious you know how to ride from that. This test has almost no riding value. It's useless...god bless the State Police". One of my better moto stories!

There are a few. Like if you want to switch to Real ID you have to go in. I think if you have unpaid tickets you have to go in, and if I remember right after age 70 you have to renew in person.

I renewed after 70 and was ready to take the test. When I got to the DMV, they waived the test. I went away happy. (Los Gatos DMV)

Truth is I started my renewal for my real ID one year too early so I had to finish it up this month

I had to renew my license this year, got a Real ID with motorcycle endorsement without a written test.

:dunno

I think any renewal with tickets in the last few years trigger a retest..?

No, it is 6 months. I get one ticket every 5 years like motherfucking clockwork a few months before renewal.

It's kinda annoying many of us have been in the same position of renewing our license, REAL ID or no REAL ID, with different requirements of written tests.

You'd think the DMV would be consistent but just saying that may be a tad naive.

^^^ agreed.

I’ve personally observed a very old gentleman being coached on the eye chart by a DMV employee.

Chuckling because I’ve counseled oldsters to turn their torso to achieve rotational viewing while in a cage/drivers test cuz their necks are stiff. Hope they kept it up!

I used to memorize the eye test boards since I couldn't get them in focus with my left eye. DMV drones would ask for the same 3 lines every time. :laughing

Read the first line with both eyes.

Read the third line with one eye closed.

Read the last line with other eye closed.

Easy peasy.
