Just got a Google nexus 7

I have the trial and I don't really see an advantage over the stock google one yet. In fact the landscape keyboard is bullshit. Split keyboard for swyping, wtf?

there's a swiftkey tablet version. i dunno if its good though i havent actually tried it.

That's what I tried. I only played with it for a little bit but didnt really seem any better than the stock one. I couldn't figure out how to get the true landscape keyboard in the settings either although they show a picture of it on the DL page.

it looks like you cant change it on the free version (its usually under 'theme')

you should just pay for it, i heard the paid version lets you enable swift-beard, which lets you type by holding it up to your beard. it also analyzes whatever you've eaten recently.

That's stupid, its a one month free trial, everything should be enabled. This beard mode sounds awesome.

I tried it. Swiftkey sucks. The stock one is good, Swype beta is better though the dictionary is broken.

Just a note since people have mentioning cases, I bough the Speck Fitfolio for 20$

Google Music app is great too. I just dumped my whole iTunes library into Google Music. No need to store so much music on the Nexus 7.

I also like the fact that it's pure Android.

I already use that on my phone and desktop (and the Nexus). :teeth

For $20 at Best Buy, I saw a Cygnett tablet case that looks like an egg crate, just had to have it for the iPad. Those round thingies soak up impacts and pressure, they are quite protective, kinda like...an egg crate. :p

yeah, I got the txt awhile back saying that they believe I was tethering and and if I don't stop, they will drop my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I used less data the following month and so far it's been a non issue.

Yeah, I've been using like, 26-34gigs a month on mine...it's my only internet. PDAnet apparently does a good job of hiding the tether usage. Although now that I've typed this, the data nazis will no doubt send me a text.

If you have Android 4.1 or above, FoxFi doesn't work. :(

You can use PDANet via bluetooth (you'll need to install PDANet for Tablets on your n7 to connect it) It works for most apps, but some still won't see you having a data connection

Thanks for this! Now I can use my Toshiba Excite 10 anywhere!

are these tablets suspectable suspestable easy to get fux0red by virus like regular pc/laptops..?

are there antivirus apps for em..? both ipad/droid platforms...

I was using swype for 1.5 yrs and switched to swiftkey. Been using it for ~3 months and like it better than stock and swype. The predictive text in swype is fantastic. You should give it 2 weeks or so to build a dictionary based on your usage.

There are antivirus apps but mostly it is suspect data mining instead of actual viruses. If you stick to well known apps (lots of downloads, well rated, big publishers) you should be fine. In other words just don't install girl in bikini screen savers or dirty joke of the day etc. Also don't turn off the untrusted sources filter...which we have done for apps in this thread :laughing

apropos for 'safety' of apps attn: V4, basically all the androids/google "market" put a bigger decision-making AND responsibility in the hand of the consumer, because:

--each time you install an app you're presented with the screen that: this app will access: a) internet, b) your sd card

.. then you decide, if it is for example a "flashlight app" whether it needs a permission to access your ".. phone identification information".

I use Lookout on all our devices. It scans upon install/update and I like the device locating features. IMHO, simple common sense works a load better than any anti-virus so finding a decent one that's unobtrusive is usually my goal. Lookout satisfies this for me.

The location services are pretty good too. It does a "signal flare" sending it's location to your online Lookout account when the battery is low so you can (potentially) have a last known good location if it loses power.

You can also locate your device by logging in to the Lookout website from your PC or another phone/tablet, it's GPS position will show up on the website. You can then request a "scream." The scream overrides any silent/vibrate you may have in place and causes the device to do a loud siren sound.
