The issue/benefit of old age is that I actually remember this shit. In 1968 the wings on F1 cars were on struts far above the car, until one broke. They were banned for the 1969 season in F1.

The ever innovative Jim Hall about the same time came out with the
Chapparal 2E that had a high "flipper" wing that got steep for braking and cornering, then trimmed out to reduce drag on the straights. That got banned by (I think) both the SCCA and FIA for being a moveable downforce device. Then Jim had another big idea (BTW, I got to meet him once) called the
Chapparal 2J, AKA The Sucker Car. This ran most of the 1970 season, and when it worked it was really quick, but I don't recall it finishing any races. It was also banned at the end of the season, saying that the fans violated the rule on moveable aero devices.
Then when Chapman figured out ground effects for the Lotus 78(I think), nobody could keep up, prompting Brabham to develop the
BT-46B, which also had a fan. The FIA didn't ban it, but the team owner at that time, Bernie Ecclestone apparently decided to withdraw it before it got banned.
