Lake Berryessa Glory Hole

I am very particular about my glory holes. That one looks kind of rough on inside, prefer a more smooth one.

Thanks for bringing it to fruition. I wonder if there is a reason for the steps or if it's just easier to construct that way...

I was pondering this also. Cavitation maybe?

Maybe the turbulence stops cavitation at the elbow and improves flow. I was pondering dimples on a golf ball...

According to the wikipedia page, the ladybower reservoir was constructed between1935-1943, and the bellmouth is made of stone, not concrete as the berryessa gloryhole is.

Cavitation is a relatively recently understood phenomenon of water flow so that, barely on the radar at the time this thing would have been designed. Given the materials and era of construction (WWII 1939-1945) I'll say that the stepped profile is purely a bean counting triumph over anything else. Stone blocks aren't exactly a war machine supply, and they don't need forms made of wood or other wartime materials to be set.

It must have been a pretty important reservoir to have been completed during the war, or worked on at all.
