*Liam's Wild Ride*

Liam

Saw you on the MotoGP webcast, that was awesome. Congrats on your team and some face-time.

I think that ranks as the best race ever (at least in my short viewership lifetime) for 3rd place.

Liam great weekend for you guys, 4th and 9th!

Don't know if this counts as a "scoop" but I don't think this has been made public yet :) I want to say a HUGE WELCOME to another American Company who has made the commitment to sponsor a team in MotoGP! :thumbup WAY TO GO GUYS!!!!!!

"Axio is pleased to announce its partnership with the Pramac Dantin MotoGP team for the 2007 season.

As a flagship of this association, AXIO has created a limited–edition, hard-shell pack to commemorate the partnership. Bearing the Pramac Dantin name and adorned in white and red livery, the polycarbonate hard-shell pack is available to the consumer, and will also be utilized by the Pramac team for the 2007 MotoGP season.

Axio was selected as the official supplier to the Pramac d’Antin Team for their unique and technical designs that mirror the qualities and spirit of MotoGP racing and the Pramac Dantin Team alike.

This partnership marks the beginning of Axio’s involvement in the MotoGP arena. Look for these Axio items at MotoGP races worldwide, and the official website of Pramac Dantin MotoGP team."

Yee-Hah! My favorite computer bag is joining me in MotoGP - so I won't need to switch to something I wouldn't like! Huge thanks goes out to Bob Haro (yes, the super awesome BMX'er) for helping me put our two organizations together, and for the fantastic design work. More info at

you missed the part where he said they won't be available until mid summer.

congrats liam! another 0.033 secs and it would have been third place!

Maybe Alex "held back". There is a potential downside to finishing in front of the factory team. ;)

It Feels Like a Win!

For Now.

Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement - I'm sorry I haven't been able to post more during this amazing time. I recently recorded an interview about Turkey for MotoGPod (Podcast), and within a couple hours I hope to have some time to go through some photos and put together a wrap-up for the Turkish GP - where we finished 4th and 9th!

I apologize if I missed replying to anyone's email within the last week - it has been nothing but Full Systems GO!!! for the last couple weeks, and with the post race testing day, the earlier than normal flight to China to adjust a little to the time difference, and a National Holiday on Wednesday in Italy - that means even less time to prepare for the Shanghai GP. That's where everything really started for me, but we'll get into that later. I'm sure if someone did some digging they could find the original Barf threads where a few of us planned and invited everyone to a Barf Social in China in 2005, and the subsequent photo threads. Anyway, I have to take care of a few things and by the evening I should have some "free" time to get some words and pictures down. Once again, thank you everyone, it was Incredible!

I can't say how appropriate I think it is that the word MOTO is smack dab in the middle of my forehead in this shot.

See you guys in a couple hours - I hope!

Given Alex's age and experiences with factories, I can't imagine that's a concern of his, though if it were a younger rider, I could see your point. When he whooped Rossi's butt in '02 for two of the last four races, he may have had an incentive then, but not now. Plus, think of all the time he and Loris spent on the West Honda Pons team (You're missed Sito). I believe he just didn't have that extra tenth that day, but Alex will be on it again before year's end. I'm picking him to win Portugal- again. :teeth

A couple of questions

Hi Liam. I've just reread the first several pages of your adventure and there is a couple of things I'm having trouble piecing together.

First, did you go over to Spain as a photographer to get MotoGP access or did you just schmooze your way in by admitting you wanted to be a part of a team and wait for an opening?

Second, what is "BCN" that you keep referring to?

Third, you mentioned you had room mates as soon as you arrived. So, you had a place to stay when you got there, ahead of time? How did you arrange it?

Fourth, when did the D'Antin deal come about and how? I noticed you were part of the MoviStar crew right away but I don't know how you got that one either. Did the first gig with MoviStar lead to the D'Antin gig?

I have to be honest, I would absolutey LOVE to see Alex kick the crap out of everyone this year. I had Loris pegged for the title last year though I can hardly complain about the outcome. I want to see Hopper get the next one. Well, I'm tired. Have fun over there. Enter me in any contests for a free Desmosedici. I have no bike now! Boo hoo...:cry

i lagged on watching the race this week, but DAAAAAMN!! sitting here, friday at 1.45 in the morning finally getting to watch casey destroy the field, and *boing* there's you know who...

the Moto on your forehead was good, but i think this is the better celebratory shot...

Actually, I think everyone out here (in the paddock) had an idea that I was coming to look for work. Based on the connections I made at the '05 USGP, I was already in contact with various teams and personnel before I landed in Spain. Once I was here, though, I technically had nothing, so I did whatever I could to find a spot at the races, whether it was working something small, taking photos, or just "beating the pavement". In the end, it boils down to the thought that you must place yourself in the right position to take advantage of opportunities that wouldn't otherwise be available to you if you weren't there. They say luck is 90% hard work, and I truly believe there's no way to make a dent or an impression on anyone in MotoGP if you're still based in the States. I think I really had to show some stones to get some respect out here, and let them know that I was serious. After watching me through '06 season, I think some people appreciated my work ethic and for the '07 season, I was rewarded with a different position with the team, using my brain more than just being a "helper". By getting promoted, I knocked someone else out of the Championship and in turn brought someone else in. I'll never be able to disclose everything that really happened while I was making inroads into the GP scene - that's just something that everyone has to figure out for themselves and it's different for everyone because we all bring different skills and attributes to the table. What I can say is that it is possible to break into MotoGP, which is exactly what I set out to do in the first place. If you keep reading the thread, most of this stuff is in there (go a little deeper through the thread), and along the way I've tried to take other neat pictures of little adventures here in Europe while I was trying to make inroads. Definitely, I wouldn't be here without the help of two Nacho's, and I never would have met them if not for some crazy luck - or was it something more?

Second, what is "BCN" that you keep referring to?

Easy. Barcelona!

Third, you mentioned you had room mates as soon as you arrived. So, you had a place to stay when you got there, ahead of time? How did you arrange it?

The guy I met in Shanghai in '05 suggested living in BCN, and he set me up with the original group of people I lived with when I got here. Unfortunately, the vibe wasn't "just" right, and it took me almost a year before I was able to change locations and people.

Fourth, when did the D'Antin deal come about and how? I noticed you were part of the MoviStar crew right away but I don't know how you got that one either. Did the first gig with MoviStar lead to the D'Antin gig?

In a way, yes and no. Once again, my friend Nacho was responsible for the Movistar gig, but the Dantin hook-up was totally separate. A Dorna security guy kept busting me at the USGP, and he recognized me at the Valencia race later that year (wonder why?). I told him why I was there, explained a little bit, showed resumes/references (which doesn't mean anything anyway), and he put me in touch with a young Spanish kid, coincidently named Nacho, also (referred to as Nachete). Nachete was the guy who put me in contact with a D'antin representative to work the Losail cup, and it was while working that race series that I had a chance to spend time with and talk to Luis D'antin. After five races in Qatar, the Spanish National Championship were about to start (and I was thinking I would be working in that series), but it was time to let someone go from the GP team and I got the go ahead to give it shot at the Mugello race.

Enter me in any contests for a free Desmosedici. I have no bike now! Boo hoo...:cry
Yeah, right! I'm working on getting a BMX and you're looking to me to get you a Desmosedici? Work for it, hahaha. You know what I always say - Work Harder, Get Luckier! Problem is, now that I'm in there and moving right along, I don't really have time for a normal life, so you guys should all count yourselves as lucky and remember to really enjoy the pleasures that your life brings you. There are some days where it kills me not to wake up next to someone I've spent years building and nurturing a relationship with - so TAKE YOUR WIVES TO DINNER THIS WEEKEND. Then go home and watch the WSBK races from Assen.

Sage advise, but I think you mean 'take your wife for a [motorcycle] ride this weekend, and THEN to dinner.'

Liam, thanks again or taking the time to keep us all abreast of your adventures. Congratulations to you and your teams for the fantastic showing of Ducati power and grace in this last race. I look forward to more of the same, with some podium standing along the way.
Please remember, when you DO get there, to flash the shocker for all us BARFers, so we can say 'look! He's one of us!'
Take care buddy,
Lonster

My boss knows how to do the Shocker!!

And I've already begun to teach young Stevie the value of the shocker - he couldn't get it down for this photo, but oh well, give me time. Little brat kept stealing my drinks (the Red Bulls, I mean).

Way to go man!

Just how Italian is Casey's new crew? With names like Bruno, Gabri (Beefcake), Gino, Mondo, Pierro, Luciano, Magilla, and Cristian (C2), you know he's running with some serious firepower, and he's definitely "in" with the famiglia now.

I know this all too well. At least you're doing something you enjoy and can be proud of. I gave up a lot by traveling 6 years straight and in the end got very little to show for it for what I put into it, figuring the money would come later. WRONG! The ROI was horrible and I am Kyosaki's poster child- times ten! Have fun and enjoy your time there. And GO ALEX!!! We need three wins from you (Alex) this year. They should be at Portugal, Muegello and Laguna, just to show Melandri what you COULD have done had he not taken you out in '05. Well, if not Hopkins, then Barros. Hopefully, your Duc is as fast as Stoner's.
