Holy Smokes, that was just 2 weeks in the life!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the support, and thanks to Jrace for posting all those great pictures! I want to reply to everyone over this next week, as I'm back at "homebase" in Barcelona. The only problem is that I've lost my internet connection at my apartment (yup, sixth or seventh time within a year!), and it will be a few weeks before the repairman will be able to come out and figure out what's wrong. By that time, I'll be on "paradise island", otherwise known as England, or perhaps in Holland, for the Assen race.

I met up with some great Barfers in the last two weeks, in Italy and Catalunya, and later this week I'll be chopping up photos and going through the memories of both events. I'll have some great material to throw up on the web at that point, as well as some conjecture about next season, as the rumours have cranked it up a notch lately! Not only that, but these last two weeks have been absolutely brutal, haha. I got back to BCN yesterday evening, went out for some mexican food and a couple beers with a friend, and promptly spent most of this morning "recovering". By the time I'd modified most of my work files from the last race, I noticed the day had wound down, because time absolutely flies when you're nose-deep in the trenches.

Jeez, I notice in most of the pictures of me, I look soooo serious! I noticed it in the tv show footage (which was great!), too, but don't worry, I'm still having the time of my life. As always, the trials and troubles of a life on the road can wear a person out a little, and the other, smaller details of life can sometimes really be a pain in the ass, but overall I'm doing great. Man, I have so much stuff to sort through, these last two weeks were just incredible, and I hardly know where to begin. Luckily, I have a few days here in BCN, so I'm hoping to be fully caught up and prepared for the Nickel and Dime GP and the A-Style Assen TT GP, and my website should be polished up and ready to rock and roll for the next races. I feel like the last two weeks were actually two months!

That picture with Nick Harris is pretty funny, btw, because he looks so small! Here's me showing off my Oakley Riddle's, Red and White edition :) with one of our Italian press girls, Francesca. DO I LOVE THIS JOB OR WHAT?!??!!

Okay, I'll be the one to ask... that's a rhetorical question, right Liam? I'm assuming next time we read from you, she will be the mother of... invention, finding a way to get your internet reconnected back in BCN. :p I'm looking forward to Alex kicking some ass in the near future. Saw his interview on MotoGP.com and he noted the bikes are not so different so, I expect him to win now. No excuses. Oh, and Alex, if you are reading over Liam's shoulder...

Question: If you were Valentino Rossi, who would you want to pick as your successor? Who would you like to see winning races and dominating the field, as you have done for the last 7 years? In my experience, I have only seen Vale genuinely happy racing (win or lose) with Nicky Hayden, Loris Capirossi, and now, Casey Stoner.

Trivia time! Who's this? You all know his work ;)

It's either Steve Wynn or Jenna Jameson's father... let me think... 'we all know his body of work'... no, wait... you just said 'work', not 'body of'... okay, it's Steve Wynn! :nerd Oh, I get it! "Wynn" on a race thread! Very clever indeed. PM me for an updated address as to where you can send Alex's B-Ducati and don't worry about sending it express, it's too hot here in Arizona to do track days at the moment. Wow. I've never ridden a GP bike before. Thanks Liam! Oh, and send the girl too. :teeth

And the chap he's talking to is Ian Wheeler, PR & Communications bod for Kawasaki MotoGP. Do I win a prize? If so send me Alex's A-Ducati and the girl's sister! :teeth

Gold or Goose?

hey liam,

what has been your favorite race (actual racing)?

what has been your favorite race for the activities/parties/the life of the county when gp is in town?

Good q :).

{Good thread too. Subscribing! I think I'll save the pages offline and read while I'm commuting. No, not while ON a bike!}

Favorite race? I thought about this for a day now, and I honestly can't say that I have an absolute favorite. There are different times, different dramas, events, and build-up, to all the races I've been to or been a part of, and while some have had much better results than others, I love each one just the same. A race is so much more than the 45 minutes you see on tv or on your computer. I've had great times, and other races have destroyed me and shaken my convictions as to whether or not I should continue. Favorite race? There have always been fantastic battles - where riders exceeded the limitations of their bikes and/or their tires, or maybe even outrode their injuries, and this goes back to the very first organized competitions in Greece, haha. That much will never change, and it's that spirit of competition that really gets me going. I loved watching the 500's, and the '03/'04 races were great as well. Rossi's first year on the M1 had some phenomenal races, and I distinctly remember him duking it out with Tamada and Biaggi (down on power and speed) much like he is doing this year with Stoner. Anyway, I enjoy watching all manner of two wheeled racing, because I can usually relate in some way. Except with Trials, haha. Now THAT is something to watch! I couldn't even begin to get on one of those things and do it halfway decent. Well, there was a race in Lake Elsinore in '03 that I drove down to compete in. Managed to get lapped on lap 4 of a 5 lap race, hahaha, but it was by McGrath, so that mitigated it somewhat. That race was a blast, held outdoors at night, and it wasn't serious at all. Really, it doesn't matter. I have never been able to choose a favorite woman, because I love so many different aspects about all of them, and I'll never be able to choose a favorite race, either.

Hmmm, I don't ever really take this into consideration too much because for me, the racing comes first. There are tracks I like, facilities I like, and countries and attitudes I don't like, and for those of you who keep up with my website, you'll probably be able to figure out which races were special for me, haha. I really had a blast staying in Shanghai and Tokyo following those races, and Malaysia and Australia are also cool places to hang before or after a GP. Australia is chill, Kuala Lumpur is strange, and the European races kind of become a blur for me because everywhere I go I don't speak the native language. While I was at the Catalunya GP last weekend in my truck, I could have forgetten I was even in Spain, because it didn't matter to me at all. It was another race, another chance. Overall, the Laguna race is special to me, because of all my friends who come to the racetrack. I will probably only be in the US once this year, for the race, and getting together with my old friends to eat and drink is a real treat. Which reminds me, maybe we should put something together for a Friday night in Monterey . . . but maybe not at the Blue Fin, because I'm tired of all the crowds and I'd prefer something quieter and more intimate. Maybe a pizza/bar a few blocks from Cannery Row? Anyway, the bottom line is you get out of it what you put into it. Every foreign country offers something for us Americans to learn from, and amazing experiences can be had just about anywhere - if you're open to them. Put yourself out there more, live a little. I will never admit to life just having past me by, and I hope I'm encouraging some of you to do the same.

GP Time: Since no one got the LV Jail question right, I'll just move right along with this photo i saw on Soup. What are the benefits of moving the axle point to the furthest position on the Swingarm for the Catalunya race on Valentino's M1?

Busy two days coming up for me, because I'm shipping out to Donington Park and then immediately over to Holland for the Assen race. After two weeks on the road I'm back in BCN for 6 days before two more on the bounce in Germany and then the USA. 4 races, 5 weeks, and that's not a lot of time to do laundry, hahahha.

Make the bike longer to keep the front end more planted on accelertion??

My guess is to increase the leverage on the rear shock to handle the ripples that F1 leaves for the MotoGP boys.

If you want a good pizza place in monterey by cannery, i would recommend giovanies. I believe its right off of lighthouse ave

I just got off the phone with Gianni's Pizza. Here's the scoop. They don't take reservations for large groups that weekend because it makes the other customers irritated and it's already crazy enough there to begin with. I asked them about a party in the range of 40-60 and that was their answer. I have no idea how many people would be expected to show, I just ballparked that number because of the sheer star power that you command, Liam. Heh.

Anyway, if there was a more accurate count, maybe someone could talk them into it, but I think the best bet is for more suggestions on locations to meet.

One of my favorites...

in Monterey for food is Montrios. It's within walking distance of Cannery Row on Calle Principal. Nice place. Tarpy's is nice too and it's just outside the track. Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm a Montrio regular in Monterey.

P.S.

After two weeks on the road I'm back in BCN for 6 days before two more on the bounce in Germany and then the USA. 4 races, 5 weeks, and that's not a lot of time to do laundry, hahahha.

It's okay. Underwear is grossly over-rated, socks are so non-Cali, and if you smell, you just say "Hey, when in Europe, it's all about the natural smell!" Piece of cake!;)
