MikeV's ZB50 Thread

Okay, having a bit of an issue shifting. Does the amount of oil in the bike have any effect on how hard/easy they are to shift? Upshifting from N-1, 1-2, and 2-3 is fine, but downshifting is hard and getting the bike back into neutral is almost impossible.

Am I just not letting the bike warm up enough or something? It's been pretty friggin cold in Livermore.

Also, does anybody know where I can get some right angle valve stems? I can't get to the stem to fill the rear tire with air!

Hooli started a thread about these a few weeks ago. Somebody listed a local source, I think.

Got my license plate this morning :banana

Should have signals and street tires on it this weekend -- need to figure out something for a tail light and mounting bracket and I'll be good to go.

For now.

Mike, so how far did you get? Are you legal yet? Lets go ride today...

Got the plate, need signals and a tail light.

oh crap I was supposed to call you today! Will you be around this afternoon, I might check with the boss and see if I can shoot down to CV later.

In and out today, just got back from a ride. If you free up give me a jingle and we can see about getting you legal.

Bump.

So I need a tail light, STAT. I'm taking the bike to CHP on Sunday for the VIN inspection (thanks, DMV) but don't have the tail light yet.

Anybody know what dealers can ship FAST if I order one?

Let me know if you can't source one by this weekend. I might have a spare Baja Designs tail light I can loan you for the day

Tail light and signals are set, thanks to Big Pete and gstegman for coming through with spares they had laying around.

CHP inspection tomorrow, so I should be OK I hope.

Good luck :)

Didn't have enough luck.

They were looking for the emissions sticker. Further research shows that the ZB did not come with an emissions sticker, and it wasn't required because the motor is under 50cc.

Now that I look at the bike, I think they just checked the wrong box on the VIN verification and that's why it got sent back.

I'm not entirely sure yet.

Rel (CHP BARFer) took copies of all the paperwork and the guy who deals with most of this stuff for CHP is gonna find out what's up and get back to me.

I searched around a bit on Planet Minis, and it seems like Paunchy had the same problem. The issue is that the ZB never actually had an emissions sticker on it when it was made, because it was less than 50ccs. On the VIN verification form that I got when I picked up the bike, that box wasn't checked and the officer had actually written down "no emissions sticker, motor less than 50cc" instead.

I have a hunch that's what flagged it.

and of course you can buy stickers that say approved for US Forest Department yada yada but I have never seen them mention DOT. I imagine that is what they are looking for.

Just got off the phone with the CHP Office.

No emissions label = no registration.

I guess I need to contact Honda and see if I can get an emissions sticker for the bike.

FML.

that sucks.
there's a reason why they have the 49cc check box.
no emissions label needed as they're 49cc. you kind of have to emphasize the size part as i don't think they deal with this sort of thing that often.

Yeah but I think I've got a line on a swingarm with a sticker on it, and I got ahold of somebody at American Honda who I think can fax me the declaration of emissions legal nonsense blah blah blah.

I should be good.

Just got off the phone with American Honda. The lady is going to fax me a letter (and mail the hard copy) that states the 1988 ZB50 was 100% street legal and met all EPA and emissions standards for the date of manufacture.

The bad part is there is no way to order a new emissions sticker from them.

Hopefully they'll accept the letter and call it good.
