20-month-old girl, grandmother mauled by pit bulls in San Jose

A 20-month-old girl and her grandmother were mauled by two pit bulls Sunday night in San Jose, with both sent to the hospital with major injuries.

The dog bit the child's chin, ripping off part of her skin, San Jose Fire Capt. Barry Stallard said. The toddler, Anna Leigh Cinco, is being treated at Valley Medical Center. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Cinco, 48, suffered more extensive injuries.

The dogs bit the woman's neck, ear and sheared a chunk of flesh from the her lower right leg. Stallard said doctors would attempt to reattach the flesh at the hospital's trauma center. "They managed to save the chunk of meat from the leg," he said.

The dogs belonged to Cinco's sister. Authorities are still looking for the dogs. The grandmother fought the dogs off the baby at a house on the 3800 block of Quimby Road. After the 7:30 p.m. attack, Cinco put the girl in the car and tried to drive her to the hospital.

The injuries to both, however, were too severe, and Cinco pulled the car over at a shopping center on Tully Road and called 911.

"It was serious," Stallard said. "The grandmother saved the girl's life."

Very sad story. Hope the little girl and her grandmother recover fully.

:confused

I heard that it was a single dog, of a pitbull/boxer mix. The owner gave the dog up in order for it to be put down. Or was that another story?

Update on this story from the Merc-News today:

The owner of the 70-pound dog that tore apart the lip and face of a 20-month-old girl and injured her grandmother was warned a year ago that the dog could be considered dangerous.
Santa Clara County animal control officials had told the dog's owner - whom relatives identified as Lourdes Martinez, a sister of the girl's grandmother - that her 4-year-old un-neutered boxer/pit bull mix named Tazz was potentially dangerous after it bit a 41-year-old man in December 2006.
Tazz, whom Martinez had raised as a puppy, bit the man on the arm, county administrator Michele Ribardo said. It's unclear how the attack occurred, but the bite appears to have been minor. Martinez wasn't fined for the incident but was required to license the dog in order to keep it in the area without facing a penalty.
"The owner was given the warning about a potentially dangerous dog," Ribardo said. "Her dog could be deemed dangerous if something like this happened again."
Fast forward to Sunday night, when family members said Elizabeth Cinco, 48, and her granddaughter, Anna Leigh Cinco, visited Martinez at the "granny unit" she lives in behind a home on the 3800 block of Quimby Road.
It was around 7:30 p.m. when Tazz attacked. Martinez told animal control officers investigating the incident that people were coming into and out of the house.
After she had feed Tazz, Cinco came in carrying Anna. When the door opened, Martinez told officials, Tazz growled protectively. Cinco screamed.
Tazz jumped up and bit Cinco on the arm. She threw her granddaughter onto a couch to get Anna away from Tazz, the county's director of animal care and control Greg Van Wassenhove said Martinez told officials.
But Tazz followed the tossed child, attacking Anna on the couch.
Cinco jumped in to fight off the dog, San Jose fire captain Barry Stallard said. Van Wassenhove said Martinez's son pulled Tazz off the pair.
But before they tore Tazz away, he ripped away flesh from Anna's lip to her jawline, leaving her skeletal structure visible, Stallard said. Tazz bit Cinco on her ears, face and legs as she tried to separate the dog from her granddaughter.
While the investigation into the attack is ongoing, Van Wassenhove said animals sometimes view small children as "threatening their territories" in cases where dogs are present at family gatherings.
"That is the most likely scenario," Van Wassenhove said. "We don't expect a 20-month-old child to provoke a dog."
No matter what the cause, Cinco moved to save her granddaughter. She attempted to drive herself and the girl to the hospital. But the injuries to both were too severe and Cinco pulled over at a shopping center on Tully Road near a Starbucks and called 911.
"It was serious," Stallard said. "The grandmother saved the girl's life."
Paramedics, who rushed to the scene, saved a piece of the flesh around Anna's face.
Now she is recovering after a successful reconstructive surgery at a San Francisco clinic, Stallard said. She is still sedated, and medical staff are keeping watch to make sure she doesn't bite her lip.
Cinco was treated and released from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
And Tazz is dead. The pit bull/boxer mix was euthanized this morning after the dog's owner signed him over to the county.
Had the owner not agreed to have the dog euthanized, a hearing would have been held to determine the dog's fate.
Blanca Martinez, another of Cinco's sisters, lives in San Jose and said the toddler was stable and "in pretty good spirits." Martinez did not want to discuss details of the attack.

Four people were shot dead in the last week in Oakland. A tiger killed someone in SF. Over a thousand people were killed in auto accidents, half by drunk drivers, another hundred died in Iraq, several thousand starved in Africa, 400 women were raped in the US, and tens of thousand of the elderly did not have the money for both food and medicine.

Always glad to see an important topic get the attention it deserves.

:wtf That's not fair. Really. I have actually thought the same thing when I see some of the stupid stuff posted on BARF. How about the 16-hour period 4 people were killed in Richmond? What was being posted on here? Seriosuly, take a look and see. Apparently, this was significant enough for someone to post it up. For God's sake, all the news channels have taken to referring to the dog only as a boxer-mix, so maybe it will sink in peoples' heads that it was a dog attack. Period. But don't discount someone posting one thing you don't find appropriate for whatever reason. I'm not even a heavy hitter for one side of this argument or the other but responses like this don't sit right with me. I'll STFU now and refrain from posting further. :(

It's all relative. Just because it isn't as horrific and sad as some the shit that you mentioned, doesn't make it any less tragic. There's a lot of sorrow and pain on this planet, and pit bulls bulls cause their share of it.

My D650 was spewing gas on the garage floor this afternoon. To me that's a fucking tragedy and cause for more personal concern than several thousand dead Africans.

Like the boxer mix? :laughing

Indeed Pit Bulls cause some misery, about .01% of the deaths caused by one of the rarest cancers, tonsil cancer. Actually .005%.

Traffic accidents, every year, maim 1000 times more kids htan Pit Bulls. I am sure today thirty or forty parents in CA alone sexually assaulted and beat their pre teen kids.

But those Pit Bulls, man, they are some bad shit. We oughta ban them for sure, then the world will be safe. :rofl:rofl

Interestingly enough, the SFGate article doesn't even mention that it was a pitbull:
Toddler has surgery after dog attack; dog euthanized

(12-31) 11:58 PST San Jose, Calif. (AP) --

A toddler and her grandmother who were attacked by a dog are doing well after being treated in the hospital, authorities said.

Twenty-month-old Anna Leigh Cinco had part of her lip and chin reattached at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco after being bitten on the chin by a boxer mix, said San Jose Fire Capt. Barry Stallard. He said the girl is sedated and doing well.

The child's grandmother -- 48-year-old Elizabeth Cinco -- also suffered injuries on the neck, ear and right leg while trying to fight off the dog during the attack Sunday. She was released from the hospital Monday.

Stallard said the dog was euthanized Monday at the Santa Clara County animal shelter.

see my icon?

ya, she's sticking her tongue out at you while smiling. :)

sucks for the people in this article though, I hope they pull through.

Way to downplay:rolleyes

Way to downplay:rolleyes

No kidding. Yet while the "pussy or food," "tipping the tattoo artist," and "womb for rent" threads were going strong, not one word about how trivial those were compared to a world, political leader being assassinated, four people being murdered in Richmond, or even - gasp - someone being killed by a tiger! Fine, from now on, I will look for world events I find more important than the things being posted here. And it'll be easy, because, think about it: There is always something happening on a grander scale than what we see from our personal view.

As said before, the news stations are not even reporting any pit connection now, be grateful for a link to some other breed. :rolleyes

In case you don't grasp the point, the media love Pit bull attacks, murders, and car jacking. Any idiot can report on them, any mis truth can be reported, and there is no need to waste expensive media coverage on important topics when yellow journalism and sleaze have so many supporters. Why should the media even report on more important issues if you are happy to roll in the hogwash?

c'mon, ernie, you're being a bit tough. yes, there are greater issues on this planet, but i don't think it's fair to fault those who have posted about something they care about. because they have doesn't mean they care less about the big stuff that troubles the whole world.

No, I do grasp the point. There have been many of what you describe and more, yet the only one you choose to make an issue of is the pitbull-mix mauling that is only being reported as a boxer-mixed breed mauling. I don't roll in any hogwash, thank-you. As I said, I have no personal issue in this, and I think the media has removed the "pittie" reference. You missed my point completely...

eh, I don't car too much for the big stuff that troubles the world, unless it affects me directly. but even then, if I can't change it, or change myself to not be affected, then I deal with it and move on.

Ernie, I agree, it's very sad how mass media is absolute shit and hardly ever touches on the reality of the real pain and suffering going on in the world. and this is the main reason along for my strong HATE for commercials that I don't watch TV unless I'm in the mood to be bombarded with lame ass commercials that insult my intelligence.

Greg, I welcome more people posting news and such in here and everywhere. Bummer there aren't any actual facts but it still helps to bring things into perspective. I'm always curious about people opinions on things and happy to learn anything I can.

Oh, and btw, since I forgot...whether you think it's beside the point that a child had her face torn off by a dog or not, I do. I never specified what breed of dog or anything. And I don't care. If you think it's about "your" breed, that's on you. :(

maybe it had something to do with the title of the thread, (More Pitbulls attacking). THere is a slight chance I might have read that and responded to that. maybe

:wtf But you posted this story that you knew would bring such mixed emotions? Why?

I was momentarily emotional and felt bad for those involved, it makes me sad to see ongoing dog attacks and children/people being hurt.

and as Ernie pointed out, it also makes me sad to see the other horrors of society, people dieing, raping, pillaging, etc.

which is why I chose to shield myself from reality as much as possible.

I am occasionally accosted by the news on Yahoo and sadly this story caught my attention before I could make my next click.

edit- I copied the first post from their site. It said PITBULL.
they have since changed it to what you said up there.
My apologies for conveying wrong info. :(
