So here's my lame rant.

I'm looking for a new place to live. I've got a few things I absolutely need: high-speed internets for teh BARFs, good neighborhood, my own room so I can fap in private, not too expensive and most importantly, a garage for my bikes. I do not ever park on the street anymore after 2 summers ago (almost been that long? Wow, how time flies).

I've seen a few good places through craigslist or the community rentals page for my university. Most of the places have some sort of dealbreaker but that's just the nature of finding a good place to live. Of the places I did like, however, I've experienced an disappointing amount of discrimination from the property owners. The first person I called I made sure to ask about the garage. I asked how big it was, if there would be space for my tools, if I would have to share it, etc. The guy wants to know why, and I tell him it's because I have a couple motorcycles and I'm an amateur mechanic. He immediately gets evasive and stuff and tells me to call him back later, very clearly giving me the run around.

Motorcycles.

At the time I figured it was because he thought I would be making a huge mess of the garage pulling apart engines and scattering bodywork all over the place, but he was just the first. Keep in mind most people have been very gracious about my bikes or simply don't care, however it confuses me why some landlords would be so adamant about not renting to people with motorcycles. They don't even know what kind of motorcycle, how loud it is and all that, and I would think it would be more important to find out if I personally am a douchebag than base your assessment of my character by the fact I have motorcycles.

Another example: I kinda figured out maybe it wouldn't be the best idea to tell people over the phone I have motorcycles. I had a decent phone conversation and was invited to check out this other place. I went by motorcycle figuring hopefully I could make a more positive and responsible impression that way without giving them the opportunity to judge me by some image they conjured up in their heads. The chick who "runs" the house (it was a group of college students) was being pretty sarcastic about it, asking stupid questions, saying stuff like "so how many girls have you gotten with that bike?" and shit. She gave me a tour of the house which took about an hour and afterwards she said, "Yeah, if you're gonna live here, you'll have to get rid of that bike." I said "What does it matter to you? What's the problem with my motorcycle?" She wouldn't give me a straight answer, just told me it would "disrupt the peaceful environment of the living space" or some hippy crap like that.

Come to think of it, I probably dodged a bullet on that one. :laughing

The place I live in now is part of a housing development that requires all renters to submit an application with a written portion, submit to a background check, have a dependent or creditor backing up your lease, all that good stuff. Yet, we still have some fucknugget who drives a straight-pipe piece of shit Miata that's louder than God himself sharting into a vuvuzuela.

I wouldn't be happy living in a place where people would hate on me for my lifestyle but it boggles my mind that so many people think motorcycles are just noisy douchebag poser death machines that rape babies and kill puppies and they don't want them in their house. :nchantr

you're on barf, you should know people get ticked off at every little thing.

a motorcycle is more of a big thing than a little thing.

Don't mention the bike, it is irrelevant much like your LGBT status or lack of it.

I have never seen a lease that didn't forbid wrenching on the premesis, and I've never signed one I didn't violate in that manner to varying degrees. It's the landlord covering their ass in case you disable the vehicle and they need to boot your ass.

Also, there is zero doubt you dodged a bullet with the hippy so sorority sisters. One of them probably got used by her brother/father/uncle/cousin who rides bikes.

Ask if there is indoor parking and don't specify a bike. I wouldn't mention the bit about the tools, and amateur mechanic etc. Landlords do not like ongoing projects and shit.

Just evaluate all that stuff when looking at the place. Ask questions in person, and ride your bike there. Don't make it a big deal, this is just your mode of transportation.

The other part is the "mechanic" admission.

If you say amateur mechanic, it sounds like you wrench on bikes all the time. Do it for friends under the table. Blah blah blah.

I would not be happy if an amateur Harley mechanic moved in next door. There is no guarantee there would no midnight repairs, or more importantly, late night revving.

Unless it is spelled out "No mechanical work", there is an assumption you will work do some mechanics. Just leave it at that.

Yeah, I think you may be making too big a deal of it and then people start to wonder. As already noted you scared one guy off by saying amateur mechanic, and frankly if I was the renter that would have been a red flag for me as well. It sounds like you're going to make a huge mess and have shit strewn all over and generally get yourself in over your head and I'm going to have a shitty frame and blown engine block on my property when you move out. Plus you'll be revving the bike at 2am.

The other house just sounds crappy and as you noted you wouldn't to live there anyway. Anyone who told me I have to get rid of something in order to live there I would have been like FU.

I've seen rental agreements that specifically ban working on vehicles, I've signed them and then assumed they didn't mean maintenance just major repairs. Never had management hassle me over oil changes and tune ups.

that's because your mechanic coveralls look like a sailer-moon costume, and ain't NO ONE going to f*ck with THAT !

I didn't actually use the words "amateur mechanic," I said that I can fix bikes. But I guess he put the pieces together when I mentioned I had a lot of tools. :laughing

That guy I give a pass to because he was the least rude and I admittedly am kind of a slob with my tools. Everyone else though has kinda been a jackass.

That's most of what I do, I say amateur because I don't know how to do anything that much more complicated than basic fabrication and intermediate maintenance. Anything serious that needs to be one I do at the garage my friend runs or have a mechanic help me out with. I'm not about to be doing valve adjustments in my garage.

Bikers are assholes. That's the general consensus you are fighting against. Even bikers think other bikers are assholes.

+1 on the mechanic thing. Saying you're an amateur mechanic opens up to the idea that you're running a clandestine business/garage and will be doing work frequently. And as a property owner/landlord you just immediately start thinking about safety issues such as combustibles and other chemical hazards, let alone the noise.

When asking about the size of the garage space, just mention, "I could use the space for storage". or to that effect. You're not lying.

Also, Don't move in with two college aged women. I've been down that path 2x, when it gets ugly it's FUCKING HORRIBLE.

It could be a phrasing issue. If I were renting a room and I heard this, it would make me think that you might have customers coming by to have you fix their motos/cars. This would NOT make me comfortable.

As for the moto thing, it really isn't too surprising. I would strongly recommend posting in the appropriate section of the BARF classifieds, if you haven't already. If I were young, single, and looking for a place to live, I would try to find other moto trash. :dunno Just don't tell them that your bike smells like an ashtray. Might be a deal breaker. :twofinger

Find like-minded individuals. Place I lived in during kolidge, we'd shoot pellet guns, get tanked up and flat track a moped with no brakes in the back yard. Had motorcycles, loud rock and/or roll music and shit. I'm sure the neighbors loved us, but I never had trouble with roommates until the good ones grajeeated and some loser douche moved in who didn't have a motorcycle and then I grajeeated too and it wasn't an issue.

Anyways, look for other gear heads.

It's a seller's market for rentals. When I was looking I never mentioned motos, just that I don't like to park my car outside, and I never rode my bike to check out a place. If you don't have a car, borrow a friend's or something. You want to make yourself as vanilla as possible, because that's what landlords want. Or make yourself look as [protected class] as possible, and make a comment about how your last landlord is still paying for his discrimination (you can't prove you're NOT a [xxx]-ist/-ohpobe).

never found bike's to be a problem, just don't tell them you reload your own ammo or cast your own bullet's.:teeth:rofl

I'm a landlord, and I have specified to my past tenants; "The garage is NOT part of the rental space".

My reasons are as follows; My garage belongs to ME. It is where I keep my toys. I have dogs. I do not want some idiot leaving my garage door open, and letting my dogs out. I do not want someone parking some POS in there and it NEVER leaves because they started a repair that they could not finish. I would NEVER rent to someone who stated that they were an ametuer Mechanic!!

I live next door to a douchebag who runs an illegal auto repair in his home. You shoud see the mess he creates. That would be a HUGE RED FLAG.

If you are looking to rent a room, all of the other stuff must be negotiated. If you are renting a room with a garage space, then that is a different story.

G/L.

What is 'protected class'?

What brilliant advice!!! :thumbdown

Reading what you wrote I definately got a Lost Boys image of you and your vampire gang hanging in Santa Clarita...As a landlord yes your questions were scary. Every landlord has a horror story of the guy who parked his bike in the livingroom and ruined the floors with oil. Keep it simple. Got a garage? Can a car fit in it or just storage? You don't have to give these guys any more info than name, rank and serial number.

Totally. Only about 5-10% of the rentals have garage space. Most homes in Santa Cruz don't have garages :(

To Lefty's point, "amateur mechanics" are a mess-hazard from the get-go. Nobody wants someone making exhaust noise at all hours or the risk of spilled oil/coolant & gas smells. If you want to work on your bikes, fine - but keep that to yourself !

I recall a rental I had shortly post-college in a quiet beach neighborhood. We got along well with our neighbors - kept the place clean, didn't have parties often and lent a hand with chores for the older ones. One weekend a buddy and I pulled the engine from a GS650E using the tree in front of the house and a come-along - I know, that's pretty redneck, but it worked fine. Anyway, within 24 hours we had at least a half-dozen 'visits' from various neighbors nearly all CERTAIN we would NEVER have that bike in operation again - "You should just get rid of it" was the prevailing theme.

That bike was running fine by the next weekend - the day of the shade-tree mechanic is past for most I suppose.

As for the OP - that bike and all the rest of mine run stock exhausts, I strongly suspect that the anti-bike bias you are finding has it's roots in the strong dislike most people have of assholes riding loud bikes.

This I can understand, however the amount of douchebag tokyo drift wannabe ricers with fart cans/no cans all over this town has me thinking they just hate motorcycles and are looking for an excuse.
