i would bet that keeping a good amount of speed at full lean on one of those bikes like ruggia comes down to tire technology. when engineers started realizing that a bike can corner harder and faster at full lean as long as it has a sufficiently large and sticky contact patch, thats when body position came into play more.

or maybe the dudes from back in the day were doing it right and leaning that far over is just a gimmick like rossi's dangly leg.

Soooo we've got exactly one month until Round 1 in Qatar, and I just heard from the man himself that he's basically chosen to take a leave from BARF.

Anybody interested in taking the reigns of hosting the GP threads?
 
man, why did rider's have such horrible body position back in the day?

It wasn't horrible for the 5 time champion Doohan... he had his own style to
tame the NSR when nobody else could... he prefer to put the effort back on
himself rather than aids or adopt the "correct style"... HRC engineers
concocted new technology to make the NSR500 more rideable... back in 90s
they created a traction control device... semi active suspension... fuel
injection... water injection... and and the first launch control system... one
by one Mick rejected them all even a simple quick shifter considered a norm
by his rivals... He instructed the HRC engineers to give the stuff to team
mate Criville and Itoh and if they start beating him then he's try it too... Mick
used his bike strictly as a tool... he was there to do a job... he knows the
target lap times he needs and he went straight to it...

Doohan is not a real good example for body position, because he was a totally different rider going right than he was going left. He is, however, a good example of a fucking badass.

and a shattered right leg that was almost amputated-couldn't use rear brake and had thumb brake installed-total badass

they were 500 cc- 2-strokes- they had to keep their heads up to look for a soft place to land when the engine seized or they high sided - dot race tires today are probably better than what they had back then
 
Nicky got some surgery yesterday apparently. Duc aint going to COTA, so hopefully it isnt a problem for Jerez.

No live timing from private texas test?

Not officially from Dorna anyway. Teams will be doing their own timing I would imagine, but I don't know about publicizing it. Save for some of the regular moto journos that might be there taking a picture of the timing screens in each of the team garages and tweeting about it, team press releases would be the only other way I could think of.

Ducati explains Austin test absence

The riders may gain two tenths advantage from learning the Austin track but we are not two tenths behind (Jorge) Lorenzo. When we are I would have said we will go to the test.

The Austin test would have diluted the focus of our test plan though. In addition it is financial too. For a limited advantage to invest a lot of money in that test I would rather put it towards development.

HRC arranged for this test for their riders, then opened the invitation to the other manufacturers. Yamaha has since joined and will share the bill with HRC, but Ducati opted out.
 
I guess they didn't ride today, Rossi tweeted about riding tomorrow. One of the other articles said the track was removing some of the aggressive curbing
 
i thought they were always scheduled for a tues. open track? i think you are just getting used to sepang testing where they say tuesday, which translates to monday on this side of the globe.

for comparison, F1 lap record from last year is 1:39.347. i bet the bikes are going half as slow as F1 cars through that long sequence of esses.
