i would bet that keeping a good amount of speed at full lean on one of those bikes like ruggia comes down to tire technology. when engineers started realizing that a bike can corner harder and faster at full lean as long as it has a sufficiently large and sticky contact patch, thats when body position came into play more.
or maybe the dudes from back in the day were doing it right and leaning that far over is just a gimmick like rossi's dangly leg.
