Nice! What are you trying to work out?

Other than playing while standing? :laughing It would be nice to nail down the basics and learn scale shapes up and down the neck. This would hopefully lead to an ability to be able to improvise simple melodies over chord changes, like I saw in the BARF jam session videos (when is the next one BWT?). I just repaired my metranome and now must set aside time to practice with it. ;)

Also, I have noticed that most rock guitarists are moving away from the dry, scooped-mid tones that are part and parcel of high-output ceramic-magnet humbuckers and are returning to the warmer, "rounder" sound of moderate output pickups (i.e. PAF-based) & overdriven EL34 power tubes. Thank God...I never got used to the icepick-through-the-forehead solid-state br00talz sound. :|:laughing

Jeff, the video you posted has a great exercise, but it's not trivial to play or apply. Having the sextuplet patterns at your disposal would be a good thing, however.

Honestly, to play over changes like we did at the last BARF jam, you could get by quite nicely on a blues scale, which is essentially a pentatonic with a flat 5 added. It is, honest to God, all you'd need for what we were playing. This scale has the lovely property of being pretty ambiguous as to whether the key is major or minor, which makes it easier to apply.

You got me curious enough about the vid that I may try to find time to transcribe it. My own tendency would be to play it with strict alternate picking, but Gilbert's use of economy picking should make it easier to do the run fast.

I've always recognized one key to great guitar playing...REALLY long fingers:rofl

Yes, I know there are exceptions, but you have to admit, most of the greats seem to have alien hands:laughing

Back in college when I was taking Theory, you had to take Piano I & II to accompany Theory. I remember thinking the exact same thing about that instrument as I was doing scales:laughing

I haz too.... Just in case the world implodes on itself. I need to have some spare moniez $

^^^My head just imploded.

that isn't all that hard to play, I was able to play that, granted it was at about 1/2 speed:laughing

but the movement isn't all that complex, it follows a pretty easy pattern that isn't too much of a problem for my muscle memory.

I used to use that as a warm up, when I started to lock my fingers. For the longest time I only used my index, middle, and pinky finger on the frets. This exercise helped me incorporate my ring finger, which made all transitions a whole lot easier.

If you guys already don't know... Plastic strings ftl:mad:thumbdown

Just so you know, there was a short-scale electric bass back in the 90's that used various gauges of surgical latex tubing for strings. The bridge saddles had piezo pickups. No s**t.

:laughingWell after talking to my freind and bitching about how they couldn't hold their note and were super "slippery" he asked..."you picked up "classical guitar' strings didn't you?" I said "well... aucostic is classical right?":teeth He then proceeded to drop some knowledge on me...:mad:facepalm

lol you installed classical guitar strings on a steel string acoustic? If it has the slotted machine tuning heads it is a steel string, if it has rollers it uses nylon strings.
