That fourth paragraph particularly resonates with me. I think the main reason I was able to create some acceptable phrasing while soloing over that Seger tune is because its a simple I-IV-V that I can intrinsically feel and follow while soloing. The "rules" are easier to follow. My original tunes tend to have busier, more complex progressions, and are more difficult for me to feel while improvising over them.
The Satch tune I'm working on is also a I-IV-V with a cool twist from maj to min, and it really lends itself to tasty phrasing and gorgeous melodic soloing. At least when Joe plays it.
