Musician thread

That fourth paragraph particularly resonates with me. I think the main reason I was able to create some acceptable phrasing while soloing over that Seger tune is because its a simple I-IV-V that I can intrinsically feel and follow while soloing. The "rules" are easier to follow. My original tunes tend to have busier, more complex progressions, and are more difficult for me to feel while improvising over them.

The Satch tune I'm working on is also a I-IV-V with a cool twist from maj to min, and it really lends itself to tasty phrasing and gorgeous melodic soloing. At least when Joe plays it.:teeth

My new strat has been a nightmare. It came with a stripped pickguard screw, not a big deal, just put a dab of wood glue and a toothpick nub in there.

Then I see the clear coat is lifting from the back of the neck plate because they put on the neck too early before the polyurethane could cure. Strike two

Just got back from my luthier, whom I trust with any instrument I own and he informed me that the truss rod was completely stripped from the factory. It's going back to musicians friend tomorrow

Seriously, I agree with poach, go for it.

I played for many years as a youngster and gave it up for a loooong time, but said fuck it and bought a used kit a while back. I'm terrible but it's fun and rewarding, and I occasionally hit a pocket or groove that actually sounds pretty good.
 
Happiness is running out of Finger Ease right when you really need it and finding a full can you forgot you bought. Yay!

Also, anyone have experience with Gorgomyte? Thoughts?
 
On the topic of improvisation and phrasing, this video with Oz Noy is a really great study in tension and release, showing the importance of knowing the chord tones you re dealing with.

The gf brought over her cello this weekend and we worked out a few led zeppelin ensembles for busking. We decided that we would figure out a way to extract as many dollars as we can from the boomers with music.

Also going to look at a secondhand custom shop strat tomorrow. The guy selling it seems super cool. Older guitar dude with a ton of stories

That was very cool indeed. Particularly the tele stuff starting at 7:40 or so. These guys seem to be reading my mail. Having a couple pros validate one’s thoughts re using the melody/solo to embellish simple progressions is always satisfying. Tangentially, Noy sure uses that up-picking a lot more than I do. Must be some tone advantage? Because it sure doesn’t seem very economical...

Also, I’ve tossed the band in a box idea. I want to actually play instruments whenever humanly possible. To that end, this dude followed me home recently. FUN!!!

I bought the custom shop. Holy shit the custom shop stuff is on a completely different level than the American production stuff. Exact tone I was looking for, the neck is insanely flamed, nitro lacquer, jumbo frets rosewood board. It ticked all of the boxes.

Also, I have now had some extended time with all three, and my favorite wood for a strat body is ash, by far. Pine was the worst.

My gf needs me to record a bunch of blues stuff for her project and I was dreading it, but now I'm actually looking forward to it thanks to this thing

Aside from the evh, every instrument I own is swamp ash for a reason.

Well sadly, Surf Green ended up being sold out in the warehouse and in stores with zero ability to back order as Fender doesn’t make them anymore. I called around and determined the GC in Santa Clara had this Lake Placid Blue model left in the back and was willing to discount it 20% if I bought it tonight. Done deal! I’ve finally landed a Fender Meteora! 😍

I’ll usually defend the gc guys&gals and their business model, but the “tech” folks are laughable at best.

So Fender really did a number on the Meteora from the factory. I took it to Jams to have Brian work his magic as I was getting frustrated. He ended up telling me that the bridge that Fender is using on these guitars is cut for a single cutaway style guitar like a Les Paul so the radius is wrong and it causes all kinds of problems. He modified it to work with the ten degree radius the Meteora has and says the neck was dry as hell too so that needed work, but now she’s perfect. I’ll try to get out there to pick it up before they close tomorrow. :teeth
