Oracle USA

I know why they put the limit in, but people die in formula one and they still do 200 mph in the rain.

Accidents happen, and I bet if you could ask Mr. Simpson, he would feel bad that these boats are not out there racing because of him. But rules are rules. I just want to see these boats at their limits since after this race, they will probably never sail again.

I agree. Just pointing out that there are limits in all forms of racing to increase the perceived safety.

huk this!
yesterday the whole day postponed..
today.. one race done OK.. then the next half postponed!!!

..
waste of time to anticipate to watch it :(

Actually, I think tomorrow is quicksand; the day after is fire.

B'sides, the Kiwis only need to win one more...

A fuck is given.

It was only a week ago that I caught the America's Cup fever. I was getting my tourist on, meeting friends for dinner at Pier 39. While waiting at the bar for our table, we struck up a conversation with a couple who had flown in from Boston just to watch the races. The conversation that ensued, about the AC72 cats and Larry Ellison's shennanigans, got me thinking...we will probably never see sailing this cool again in my lifetime. And it's in my back yard! The Kiwis were about to win; it could be over at any moment. I decided then and there I needed to check this out before it was over. So I've either been at Marina Green or Pier 29 to see every race last week.

It's an amazingly good time!

I gotta to give the nod to Larry...the event has clearly taken a page from the playbooks of the best type of sporting events...Formula 1, MotoGp, etc. There are jumbotrons everywhere, beers cocktails and munchies, some interesting exhibits, hot chicks. There's an awesome iOS app that ties in to the telemetry on the boats, and gives you an amazing virtual view of the race (dunno if there's an android version, worth a look). And hot chicks, you ask? Yes, they are also there. And general admission is FREE! Does it get any better? No, it does not. My mobile photos from this event are filed under a folder named "Life Not Sucking".

Why am I writing this? Because Oracle USA is on a serious roll! It's sudden death, the Kiwis just need one more win to clinch it. But TOUSA has swept the last 4 races in row! Granted they had some luck the other day with the race timing out, but whatever. It doesn't get any better than this. I will be at the races tomorrow (assuming they race) and every day thereafter until this is over. It could literally be the comeback of the century if we win.

If you wanna meet up at the venue, PM me. Races are always at 1:15 and 2:15. Be sure to check the news around noon, to ensure the race is still on. :party

ProTip: viewing area at the Marina Green is more chill, and offers a great mid-race closeup of the boats passing by. At Pier 29, you mostly get to see the finish. Pier 29 has more shops, and that's also where the America's Cup Pavillion is located, and it's where the teams sign posters and the AC72s dock, so it's a bigger complex. Also, when the winds are up, the second race of the day tends to get cancelled due to excess wind i.e., don't blow off the first race on any given day...it could be the last.

I wasted my time I think three days last week to try to watch the race, I'm seriously peeved off. Once I went there and they cancelled.

twice I walked/found a TV away from the race.. and they cancelled again. Lucky you who can go there during work hours .

Can someone fill me as to why just when New Zealand is catching up they turn 90 degrees away from the mark and go perpendicular to the course? I know nothing of sailing. Jack shit. Squat. Nada.

Awesome racing. Got hooked at somewhere around race 10, and it is just absolutely beautiful and impressive to watch.

The reason is water current in the bay around Alcatraz and under the Bridge. All part of the chess match that is sailing. If you are moving forward at 25 knots, into a -7 knot current your speed over land is only 18 knots. Sail 300 yards across the bay to find a +7 knot current and your speed over land is now 32 knots. So staying on course into a current is actually a 14 knot penalty. Hence the tack perpendicular to the course. Wind direction, point of sail and its propulsion efficiency is more complicated to explain yet follows the same logic as the current. Balancing current, wind, direction, destination and boat performance is why you see separate approaches to the same race course.

That help explain it any?

:thumbup

It is not a favorable opinion in this thread, but I'm with you, man. Seriously epic racing.

Got it :thumbup. They took a gamble that the current along the shore would give them enough speed to overcome the time of the detour.

To the neophyte it looked like a rediculous strategy, but to a sailor it looked like a legit maneuver?

Phew, glad I'm not the only BARFer that actually made it out there.

It is, indeed, better in person, (on the jetty of Yacht Club Drive), than on TV...though the TV coverage is very very impressive.

I started out rooting for the underdog Kiwis and now I'm rooting for the underdog Yanks. :laughing

If Oracle pulls out a win in Race 2 today, I'm thinking I might play hooky and venture up to the city tomorrow...

Went yesterday (Sunday) and watched Oracal win 2. Very impressive racing and very impressive venues.
