Oscar Grant Movie "Fruitvale" Wins Top Honors at Sundance

When getting accidentally shot and charged with resisting arrest is entirely in the hands of a 3rd party, how can you be so sure?

Because chances of me putting myself in the situation where I can be arrested and resisting arrest, nearly zero.

so how is it you know that this movie deifies the guy? did you get an invite to the premiere or something?

I'll be very surprised if the drunken angry loser I knew was portrayed as that.

There were pictures of Oskar on the news right after the incident. Him making mean faces and throwing gang signs. They disappear and were replaced with smiling, kind, loving father. Media made him a hero. If they could, they would do the same for Lowell Mixon.

Lovell Mixon was a street soldier, doncha know? :laughing

^what exactly does all that have to do with a film about a guy getting shot in the back and killed by a stressed out cop that doesn't know a pistol from a taser???

you two are always crying about 'threadcrappers' and 'trolls', right?

funny too how you can't see something like that ever happening to you...my gramps almost got his senile old ass shot by the cops cleaning his shotgun in the goddamned driveway. shit happens to 'good' people too, you dingbats. what you knew of this guy or just saw in the media has nothing to do with putting his story on film.

I still want to piss on his grave

I wouldn't piss on his grave if it was on fire..........Maybe we can all rush the door of the theatre without paying, start a drunken brawl, and get john (puke) burriss to sue everyone involved..........:twofinger

I loved the quote in the chronicle a while back regarding this movie. Apparently the family of OG wanted him portrayed as an angel. His mother didn't want any mention of his criminal history or general piece of shitness.

Needless to say, she was pleased with the movie.

I haven't seen "Titanic" because I know how it ends, the boat sinks... I guess I'll save another $10....

Congrats on the win, I guess.

This one ends totally different.

It ends with me being a whiteboy shitting my pants as I leave the theater in Oakland :later

"This dramatic rendering of a real-life tragedy recounts the final hours of Oscar Grant, shot by San Francisco transit police on New Year's Day, 2009. In portraying the energy Oscar brought to life, the film mourns the tragic loss of a unique soul."

The above is the film's description on Netfilx. I'm going out on a limb and say that the portrayal of Oscar Grant isn't in a negative light. :laughing

I'll rent it and see for myself and get back to you.

Sundance is 'dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences.' A Sundance award won't help a movie that the general public doesn't like or agree with: it didn't help the Cohen Brothers with their first movie.

Is this a thread about a well made independent film/movie OR is it a thread about the actions and the results of those actions to an individual?

The award is not based on ideology-other than cinematic skill, right or wrong, truthfulness, or whatever stuff is usually discussed on BARF. It shows one side of a story that has at least 3 different sides, before you take into account the bystanders, passive participants, and other factors.

We should be celebrating the impact on the local economy and that fact that local production crews, local equipment rental companies, local students and graduates from Academy Arts College received real experience, and other local businesses benefited from the money the movie brought into the area.

Because the awards are voted on by other filmmakers - their views on right/wrong, good/bad, Rep/Dem, hybrid/full electric, and caf/decaf, and are all part of their vote - you can't take that out of the equation.

Will this award help the movie or the cause, or whatever? Probably not if it takes a stand that the general public disagrees with.

The Sundance Award is just another icon on a package in the $2.99/ Five for $10 DVD box at an independent liquor store.

Or the lawsuit by the family.

"Oscar bought me a Cadillac from the grave."

Imagine if he lived and as he was robbing a liquor store he paused as he saw his face on a dvd and at that precise moment the store clerk shot him dead. Now that's a movie I'd watch :thumbup

Anyone who spends a nickel watching this movie is supporting the glorification of a criminal and furthurs the cause. fuck that. Oskar and that move are nothing but a bad memory (unless you are an Oakland taxpayer, then you are giving his family and friends your paycheck for his martyrdom :twofinger)

edit: add to the fact that the film makers collaborated to misrepresent his character to give the film more dramatic appeal and impact. FUCK THAT and FUCK THEM
