Oscar Grant Movie "Fruitvale" Wins Top Honors at Sundance

Yes, however it wasn't some cold blooded killing where the cops were running around looking for someone they could blast.

I totally agree, a really bad mistake on the officer's part.

What I object to is the "he had it coming" mentality, and frankly the thinly veiled racism in a few posts. Ugly stuff.

You mess with the bull, sometimes you get the horns.

Has nothing to do with if he deserved it or not, just an observation.

I agree it's tragic for everybody. I do believe the shooting was accidental and totaly retarded. There is no excuse for such an accident and the officer should never be in law enforcement again and needs to face consequences for his actions which he did.

And so did OG for his actions. Deserved or not, he faced the consequences. I don't think anybody wanted that to happen. But it did.

The bottom line is don;t put yourself in a position like that and the odds of something stupid or bad happening are not as high. How many times have you talked shit to a cop and refused to listen to him while being beligerent and fighting?

Yeah, me neither.

So, has anyone actually seen this movie, or are we all just talking out of our asses?

seeing that no one has stepped in and accounced they actually watched the movie, i'm gonna go with the "we are talking out of our asses" option.

come on man, this is teh BARFz - most everyone who posts on this forum should have to put a "*" at the end of their statement that reads "i am talking out of my ass" :laughing

and along w/ what Mcarb just said: i was once arrested (for riding too fast on a zx10R on the freeway, but thats another story). when i pulled over, the cop pushed me off my bike and started to manhandle me, expecting me to fight back. i was so surprised by the push off my bike that i took a second for me to realize what was going on. during this second he got on top of me and basically just staring to push me around, not really trying to get my hands behind my back.... so in that 1 second or so i realized the situation i was in, and i forced my hands behind my back, and otherwise stopped moving/resisting completely. mr.officer seemed quite surprised by these actions. he cuffed me, told me to go sit my ass down, etc. guess what, i'm still alive today, and not even a gun was pulled out of its holster. act right. dont get shot. its pretty simple IMO.

and while the above is a true story....

* I am talking out of my ass

:laughing

so none of you ever got a nice thumping from the cops when you were in the 15 to 25 age bracket?? pansies.

oh sorry, self righteous pansies.

...Your experience and perspectives may vary. However I'll wager the larger social implications of a ne'er-do-well getting shot in the back by an aggressive security force are lost in this movie, which is a shame.
Too bad that is likely the case... What you describes sounds like The Stranger by Albert Camus turned into a modern movie... Except the protagonist (OG) is a piece of shit thug instead of an existential nihilist.

I did. And I deserved it every time.

Nope. Although I did get arrested once. Cop told me to stop and I did. Told me to put my hands behind my head and I did. So on and so forht. It was like a business transaction. He did his job and I did what he told me to because you know what, I knew I was wrong and I knew better than to be a self-righteous douchebag that feels I can stand up to "the man" because I have rights Yo.

I certainly didn't, because I didn't aspire to be involved in such nonsense.

I didn't realize getting a nice thumping from the cops was a prerequisite to forming an except-able opinion about behavior.

Ehhh...no, worst thing I got was a speeding ticket. I was also a bouncer at fraternity parties and never had to get into a fight. I also never screwed with bouncers at bars and clubs (even though I was usually substantially bigger than them - I played second row, SJSU rugby, do the math!) and was never a dick or a smartmouth to cops even when they were borderline abusive in downtown San Jose. Everybody makes choices and picks their battles but as far as I'm concerned, you have to be a complete dickhead to start shit with police officers. That's a no-win situation.

^what exactly does all that have to do with a film about a guy getting shot in the back and killed by a stressed out cop that doesn't know a pistol from a taser???

you two are always crying about 'threadcrappers' and 'trolls', right?

funny too how you can't see something like that ever happening to you...my gramps almost got his senile old ass shot by the cops cleaning his shotgun in the goddamned driveway. shit happens to 'good' people too, you dingbats. what you knew of this guy or just saw in the media has nothing to do with putting his story on film.

I knew this guy. Did You? When I walked into the store and went up to the meat counter, he was disrespecting someone loudly and was super angry about something. I just wondered: "Why did they hire this asshole?"

I did, and I didn't fight them and let them cuff me, unlike Mr. Grant. You're glorifying the wrong guy. There are certainly some innocent black victims of police brutality. That's not Oscar.

If this movie makes anything more out of the incident than an accidental shooting, it is as wrong-headed as most things coming out of Oakland.
