We're going to try to get through a seventh year accident free.

The Pleasanton/Dublin weekday lunch ride is a chance for those who work and/or live in the Tri-Valley area to get out and ride during their lunch hour once every week or two. We stop for lunch afterwards for a chance to discuss the ride and to get to know each other better.

If you're curious about past years, start looking here: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196233

All rides start at 11:45 a.m. at the Lucky Supermarket parking lot on the corner of Hopyard and W. Las Positas in Pleasanton. We expect to be pulling out at 11:45, so come earlier if you want to socialize first. We'll occasionally wait a few minutes extra for someone who said they would be there (but usually only for their first time).

Here's a satelite photo of the area. Meet where the red "X" is, away from the building. If you need fuel, you can stop at the Shell station across the street first.

We try to hold the rides weekly or every other week depending on demand. If lots of people show up regularly, we'll do them more often. I have talked to at least two others who have promised to be regulars this year. We'll keep doing the rides until it starts raining in the fall.

The typical ride is Foothill road to Sunol, down Niles Canyon to Palomares Road, run Palomares the full length, then back to Pleasanton on the frontage road alongside the 580 freeway. Total ride is typically 45 minutes and we try to keep a medium pace. We'll wait for you if you want to ride slower than the leaders. We normally stop for lunch at the end of the ride, preferably somewhere quick (and usually cheap). Those of us who work in Pleasanton are usually back at work by 1:15 doing it this way. When all of the riders are experienced riders and there is no need to stop, we sometimes get back to work by 1:00.

We'll occasionally start from the north end of Palomares and run it both ways to get a few more twisties in. The north to south route can be a bit trickier, so we rarely do that with newbies along.

We have also made runs out to Highland Road and Collier Canyon east of Dublin. On rare occasions we've ridden Calaveras Road both ways. Last season we also tried Altamont Pass and Patterson Pass a couple of times. All rides will be less than 50 miles (the Palomares loop is 30) and will take less than one hour. Calaveras and Altamont usually take about 15 minutes longer than the other two routes.

All rides will be noted here several days in advance, so if you're subscribed to this thread, you'll get a notice. However, I ask you not to corrupt the thread with discussions unrelated to the actual rides, send Personal Messages for those.

If someone else besides me wants to take responsibility for a ride, go ahead and schedule one. You must show up for it if you do, though, and must be able to lead the ride.

Some people have wanted to do rides with short notice. That has worked once or twice too, although I ask at least four hours advance notice for a "short notice" ride. That means if it's after 7:45 a.m., it's too late to request a same day short notice ride.

The second posting of this thread contains the rules I expect all participants to follow.

Here's the information about the first ride:

Next Ride: Thursday, April 3, 2008

Meeting place: Lucky's parking lot on the corner of Hopyard and W. Las Positas

Meeting time: 11:45 a.m. (that's when we leave the parking lot)

Route: Palomares Road

The Rules...

We've managed to maintain an excellent safety record with this group ride over the years and I want to keep it that way. We've had two dropped bikes at stops, with minor scratches, and that's it. Our goal is to maintain a safe but interesting pace, but with safety as the number one priority.

Here are a few rule reminders that I expect everyone to follow.
  • We leave at 11:45. If you want to socialize before leaving, come earlier.
  • We meet in the Lucky's parking lot on the corner of Hopyard and W. Las Positas in Pleasanton. Please wait as far from the store as possible, e.g., near the intersection.
  • We highly encourage the wearing of full safety gear, including quality full coverage helmet, leather jacket or good quality textile jacket, leather gloves, and riding boots. Leather pants are also a plus, but most of us don't quite go that far.
  • We try to obey the laws for the most part while in town, and all but the speed limit and maybe the occasional double-yellow line for the rest of the ride.
  • In the twisties, try to keep more than two seconds distance between you and the person in front. If someone needs to make a sudden stop in front of you (like the ride leader), they shouldn't have to worry about you running up their rear. Adjust the gap on the straights. Concentrate on the road rather than whoever is riding in front of you. One second gap in staggered formation is okay on the main roads like Foothill, Niles Canyon, and the Dublin Canyon frontage road.
  • No passing of other riders. If you want to change positions, do it at a stop. We're not in a race. Passing the leader is definitely frowned upon.
  • If you can't keep in your lane you are riding too fast. There is no excuse for crossing the center line unless you are specifically passing another vehicle. If you go outside the lane on either side, slow down and figure out what you need to change about your riding.
  • Pass other vehicles like the occasional car or truck when it is safe for you to pass. Don't do it on curves, especially left turns where the car could cut the corner too. Don't cut in too close after the pass either. If someone slows down to help you pass, give them a friendly wave, even if you've been stuck behind them for several miles. You want to make them feel good for letting you by so maybe they'll do it again for someone else.
  • No stunts on these rides. Both wheels must stay on the ground at all times.
  • If you need to abort the ride early, be sure to tell someone. We will normally wait for you along the route.
  • Please turn your cell phone off when you get to the parking lot. You can turn it back on when we stop for lunch.
  • Please set your headlight on low beams, unless you're the sweep (last one in line).

I'm hoping to make it to this one. I tried last season before the weather went to crap but it just didn't work out. :D

I just assumed all the 'riders' out here went and hid from the rain while I went and played on Mt. Ham. :rofl

TOTALLY totally kidding. I just didn't think of it. :nerd

As Bugs Bunny would say, "(S)he don't know me very well, do (s)he??"

Back in the day, I rode my bike from DC to way upstate NY, about 500 miles total, during tropical storm Edward. The next week, I rode back. During TS Frank. And when I was stationed near Boston, I'd drive into downtown Beantown in the snow. No problem, just gotta have warm tires and look out for black ice. :thumbup :laughing

:sniper Wimpy riders :laughing

I'm in for some of these rides.
DRZ riders welcome?

Sounds like you don't do any frwy, a good thing for me on my drz.
Will you post each week in the group ride section as to which day the ride will be?
Thanks

We would be happy to have a DRZ along. The fastest we ever go on the Palomares ride is on the frontage road alongside I-580, which has a 55 mph speed limit. If we ride Collier Canyon or Altamont/Patterson, there is a little freeway involved, but not too far, and we don't try to stay together as a group while on the freeway, we make sure to regroup once we're off of the freeway in those cases.

We're happy to have any type of bike along, including Dual Sports and Cruisers. We adjust the ride and speed we go to meet the needs of those who show up. Sometimes we've had a bunch of new riders show up, so we kept a nice easy pace for them. Sometimes it's all experienced riders and my Ducati is the slowest bike there - so in that case the ride is a bit more spirited. Regardless of who shows up for this first ride, it will not get beyond a moderate pace.

I'll usually post which route we plan to take, but sometimes I'll leave it up to the group to decide. If you show up and prefer a certain route, we'll be happy to accommodate you.

^ :rofl mean as usual!

I'll be there Thursday. See you guys then. :thumbup

I am a bit busy on Thursday, figures. But I am going to do my best to be there. Hope to see ya then

Next Ride: Thursday, April 10, 2008

Meeting place: Lucky's parking lot on the corner of Hopyard and W. Las Positas

Meeting time: 11:45 a.m. (that's when we leave the parking lot)

Route: Palomares Road again (unless all those who show up want a different route)

_______________________________

Summary of today's ride: It would be hard to have better riding conditions than we had today, with the exception of the section with the dirt on the road at the south end of Palomares. The wild flowers are at their peak right now, with lots of California Poppies in the canyons, everything is green, and the temperature was just right. We ran Palomares both ways starting from the south. And I still pulled into the parking lot at work at 1:00, even with the extra five minutes wait for the no-shows at the beginning.

Based on all of the responses so far, I was considering that we might have to split into two groups. The actual showing was much less than that, but we had a good ride anyway. Please don't post your excuses here, tell us in person at the start of the next ride instead.

We'll see all of you next week.

Hopefully I will get a chance to ride with you guys sometime (With my work I can never be to sure when I get a lunch). I work in Dublin. :thumbup

I won't be able to make this week's ride. Be safe, y'all!! :thumbup :laughing
