As a recovering Catholic, and for all this shit the church has done (or not done), I should be allowed to GNSP this guy.

I remember when he became the Pope. There was some dialogue about him being of German heritage.
The line of the day that got me was:
"Now that we have a German Pope there is only one question left...Will France surrender now, or wait for the Vatican to invade?"

As another recovering Catholic fcuk him and all of his ilk....

I can only hope that pope Francis has the opportunity to clean up some, before he has a "nasty fall".

Thank God I am not nor ever was a catholic. Fire and brimstone, pedophilia, titheing or else..... F that, F the clergy. I feel for the "faithful" though.

Perhaps my first post of 2023 will be deleted, although I hope not.

New Year. 2023.

Not just of German heritage, he was part of the Hitler Youth.
He actively protected pedophiles and went so far as to move them to different churches...so more children could be raped.

Fuck that piece of human garbage.

I realize I'll likely get grilled for even posting this, but history has already shown that membership in the Hitler Youth was compulsory for someone the age that Ratzinger was at that time. It's not like he had a choice. I won't speak of anything he may have done while a member and whether or not he enjoyed doing so, but I will state that membership was something he would've been forced to do regardless so in fairness, you probably shouldn't hold that against the man.

As for his involvement in the protection of child abusers and the like, I agree that nothing but disdain is warranted for him.

membership in the Hitler youth had to effect him in some manner.

Perhaps it did. I didn't suggest it did or didn't. What I'm said was that there's no way him being a member could've been avoided.

... there's no way him being a member could've been avoided.

...there's no way him being a member could've avoided influencing his biases and outlook.

Plenty of people were in the Hitler Youth that I don't give a fuck about (I mean beyond the fact that a lot of them were nazi trash). This one happened to make it all the way to being the pope so he's a very public figure.
It's an accusation against the hypocrisy of the church as much against him in particular. "Hey we have a lot of white males to choose from to be the new pope, let's go with the hitler youth guy to really hammer the point home."

I find it so ironic, that if it wasn't for philandering murderous tyrant (Henry VIII) the US would possibly be Catholic today.

Catholics are only catholic for an hour on Sunday. It’s one of the better religions in that regard. Although some would likely skip mass if it wasn’t for the free wifi and snacks

I always saw him as the pope who doubled down outdated stances of the church. I thought he took it in the wrong direction and set them back decades.

I guess I'm just unwilling to judge a person (or perhaps an entire generation) based on their membership in a group that was compulsory and began when they were six years old. If that were the case, I'd have a reason to despise all religious people in general, regardless of their age. :dunno

Wonder who will play him in the movie.

DeNiro could pull it off or maybe Russell Crowe.

Ian McDiarmid, obvs.
