As a general rule, if a toy makes sounds (notably whiny electric motor sounds), they're completely uninterested. I once got a mini-RC car (we're talking matchbox size car) to see if the cats would be interested and...nope!At one point I had considered getting a tiny one of those for the same reason but got to thinking what could possibly go wrong.
We did get a toy this year for Christmas which is actually rather loud, but our one kitty is pretty bonkers over it. We have to hide it at night otherwise they just sit next to it and mournfully howl because it's not running. (The toy is on a timer, runs for a few minutes then stops for 60-90 minutes.).
I'd get the cats one of those cat wheels if there was a chance they'd actually use it (i.e. for running, not sleeping in it). They're expensive and not returnable, so haven't pulled the trigger.
