Waking up

This is Mercer. We started seeing him on our cameras at our cabin in Miramonte back in May. He was all over the property every day. He was sleeping in our very rustic garage every night, gaining access through a little hole in the corner. We'd see him come and go on the cameras, but we wouldn't see him when we were there. He first showed his face on August 7, and I immediately fed him... IMG_9120.jpeg

He was starving. He came right to me, ate food out of the spoon when I didn't get it in the bowl fast enough, and even ate out of my hand when he dropped a big chunk on the patio and I picked it up. He wouldn't let me pet him, though. We fed him multiple times a day for the week that we were there, and then he was on his own until mid-September. It broke my heart seeing him check out the empty bowls every day on the cameras 😿

We arrived on Sep 14, and he was looking at us through the window and waiting for us on the porch in the morning! Also, screen shot from cameras when I went out to feed him that morning. He was so skinny...

I ended up staying there for 6 weeks taking care of this cat! He is awesome. Probably the most affectionate cat I've ever known, especially surprising since he's been on his own so long and is an unaltered male at least 5 years old, according to the very expensive Fresno Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center where we took him to get treated for roundworm. Super trusting, loves belly rubs, give head butts constantly, comes when we call him, hangs out with us every day, gets along with our other cats, wants to play with our big orange boy Apollo, and is very possessive of us. We are definitely his people. He is still in Miramonte with Eric and our other cats. Trying to decide if we should bring him home to Oakland with us. No way do I want leave him there by himself, but living apart in 2 places is wearing thin. We were/are setting it up so he has access to the house whenever he wants it (once we get him fixed and chipped) and he will have a constant supply of dry food in his feeder, and it all sounded like a good idea at the time, but now that I am 100% in love with this guy I do not want to leave him alone there. He does like it in the house, though!

Anyway, this is our new boy Mercer! He has turned our lives upside down, but we love him so much. I worry about so much, like, will he freak out if we take him to the vet, is he going to hate it when we put a collar on him, how in the hell are we going to give him all these meds, how are we going to keep him in at night, is he going to hate us and take off if we get him fixed?? Every time I expect the worst, though, he gives us his very best. He's super smart, a very quick learner, adaptable, grateful, and loyal. I'm sure he'll be fine as long as he's with us 🩶

Expect more photos of this handsome boy in the near future!

Thank you! He's the missing triplet for Jammer's twin boys!
Amazing he is so gentle and accepting.

We had Koko bring in a small feral cat decades ago and everyday it was like he had seen me for the very first time.

Very skittish until I spent time with him on the couch in his last few days.

RIP Koko and Frank.

Here he is Frank in his heyday. He was named after Frank Black aka Black Francis.
