Speaking of special cats, this post is long overdue (and long...sorry! Feel free to skip my drivel and go straight to the photos!) but here goes...
As some of you may know, last August we started feeding a starving stray cat who moved into our garage down in Miramonte while we were away. We went down there in early September, ready to get him set up so that he could come into the house while we were gone and eat from an automatic feeder that we had set up for him. We built him an insulated house with a heated bed, and did all kinds of stuff to make sure he'd be ok, and took him to the emergency vet in Fresno to get rid of his fleas and worms. I came home in the end of October to take care of some business, intending to return ASAP, while Eric stayed behind to take care of the 3 cats. The day before I was to return to Miramonte I ran across a stray kitten living at Pottery and Beyond in Emeryville. Her 2 siblings had already disappeared and she was alone, according to the 2 saintly employees who had been feeding her and providing her shelter in a big giant ceramic pumpkin! I took photos and sent them to Eric on the spot, and being the super Cat Dad that he is, he said she probably wouldn't make it if I left her there. I took that as a green light, and I put in a lot of hours trying to trap her, and brought her home 10 days later. She was crawling with fleas, had a massive case of worms, and she was scared and miserable. Took her to the vet 2 days after trapping her and got her cleaned up. She was pretty happy, if super skittish, after that. I lived in the bathroom with her for a week. I even slept on the floor our last night in there, trying to get closer to this little wild child. It worked, as she slept on my leg and purred all night! The next day we moved into my bedroom. It was a pretty rough time for me, almost regretting my decision to bring home a kitten that we absolutely did not need or want, eating Campbell's cream of tomato soup for dinner by myself on Thanksgiving, stressing about how it would all fit together, worrying about our stray cat Mercer in Miramonte, being alone in a house with no heat (it was summer when we left and the pilot light hadn't been lit yet) and just missing my other cats and Eric...it was just a really crappy time full of stress, loneliness, self-doubt, and a lot of "what the hell was I thinking??" Meanwhile, we realized we could never just leave Mercer behind in Miramonte, and had to get him fixed so Eric could bring him home to Oakland. Eric got that taken care of, and 2 weeks later he arrived home on December 10th with our 2 cats Mae and Apollo, and our new boy Mercer. We were super nervous about how everyone would feel about a new kitten, and how Mercer would do being cooped up in a strange house, and about a million other things.
As it turned out, we shouldn't have worried about
any of those things! This was the scene on the couch the first night we were all together in the house...
That's me in the ridiculous sweater, Mae on my lap, Sundae curled up at my hip with her paws on top of Mercer's feet, and Mercer sleeping with his head on Apollo!
Almost every night since then it's been all 4 cats sleeping on our queen bed with us. Mercer and Sundae have become best friends! Even more inseparable than Apollo and Mercer were. When they're awake they are constantly playing, and Mercer is so good with her. When Sundae takes her kitty naps Mercer sits close by and guards her. When they're both sleeping they are always together. It's almost like they needed each other! Mae is 11, and ain't got time for any of this crap. She's fine as long as everyone leaves her alone, but even she has found herself getting caught up in kitty antics when she lets her guard down around Sundae

Apollo wants to play with Sundae, too, but he doesn't know how to be gentle with her like Mercer is. Sundae, for her part, sees all this as totally normal and she just wants to be one of the big kids. She is at the vet today getting spayed and chipped, and I almost cried walking out to the car after dropping her off

All is well here in the Land of Too Many Cats, and we're all adjusting to this new chaotic life

Warning: I have 1500 photos in my Sundae file so far, and probably more than that in my Mercer file, and I feel as though you all are entitled to see most of them!
