Introducing Sad Cat, a local stray. He isn't quite ready to be friends, although I have sneaked three head-touches so far.View attachment 579254
Good grief, so much has changed since this pic. Sad Sack DE-fucking-MANDS attention! Not long after this pic was taken, Mr. Hyde metamorphosed into Dr. Jekyll. I live in an upstairs condominium, and he is often on the front porch in the morning. If he feels he doesn't get enough, after weaving between my legs going downstairs, he will swat at my leg. He has drawn blood a few times as I am always wearing shorts. He LOVES a good ear scratch and shoulder massage. He has spent the night inside with us and our two other cats a few times.

If anyone needs a good starter cat, Sad Sack is waiting for you. (y) :rose

C'mon! Sounds to me like Sad Sack has already chosen his family! I am soooo glad we took Mercer in. He pretty much chose us, moving in when we weren't home, and just being ultra-present every day. He was in search of food, yeah, but also love and companionship. He is the happiest cat, and I can't imagine life without him now. I really need to get off my butt and get some photos posted. There have been some pretty remarkable developments in our ever-growing cat family! 😻

You are the best. Except for me of course, because I am The Cat Whisperer. Much love and best wishes to you, WoodsChick and all other cat lovers. We are a special breed!

Mookie is my greeter when I come home. I think the OG has enjoyed me living in his hood while I heal.

He explores the shower every morning when I am done and we chat at night often.

I am probably a week away from returning to upstairs so he will still be able to greet me before my workout but the late night chats will end.

Live downstairs forever with the kitty!

Maybe a sleep over once in a while. I miss having windows and my real bed.
Lobe tuxedo cats.

The only cat I can think of that we had that was a "never again" was a Siamese.

Our best cat, Cedric, was an orange tabby so next cat will be similar I suspect.

My fav was a Calico. She was an awesome cat. Greeted me every day in the drive way and would follow me inside to assume her position on my thigh. Still miss you Cali :rose

Probably not as much as Mookie is going to miss chatting with you at night! I'm with TWT. Put in windows and a real bed, problem solved, you're welcome!

And, yeah, orange cats are really something special. Didn't believe it til I got one myself. Apollo is definitely my once-in-a-lifetime cat, which is saying something since pretty much all my cats have been extra super-duper special 🧡IMG_4753.JPG

Apollo is super cute.

Unfortunately the bedroom is underground so adding windows is not an option.
There is a real bed, but not the bomb bed like my normal bed as it is a guest room.

Mook is a OG and does not go up and down the stairs (I should take lessons there). Perhaps he can come to my room once in a while too. :teeth

The Mrs has noted him being more spry since I moved in downstairs and man can he talk. :laughing

He lost his life long partner about a year ago and I am sure life was sort of boring for him.

Speaking of special cats, this post is long overdue (and long...sorry! Feel free to skip my drivel and go straight to the photos!) but here goes...

As some of you may know, last August we started feeding a starving stray cat who moved into our garage down in Miramonte while we were away. We went down there in early September, ready to get him set up so that he could come into the house while we were gone and eat from an automatic feeder that we had set up for him. We built him an insulated house with a heated bed, and did all kinds of stuff to make sure he'd be ok, and took him to the emergency vet in Fresno to get rid of his fleas and worms. I came home in the end of October to take care of some business, intending to return ASAP, while Eric stayed behind to take care of the 3 cats. The day before I was to return to Miramonte I ran across a stray kitten living at Pottery and Beyond in Emeryville. Her 2 siblings had already disappeared and she was alone, according to the 2 saintly employees who had been feeding her and providing her shelter in a big giant ceramic pumpkin! I took photos and sent them to Eric on the spot, and being the super Cat Dad that he is, he said she probably wouldn't make it if I left her there. I took that as a green light, and I put in a lot of hours trying to trap her, and brought her home 10 days later. She was crawling with fleas, had a massive case of worms, and she was scared and miserable. Took her to the vet 2 days after trapping her and got her cleaned up. She was pretty happy, if super skittish, after that. I lived in the bathroom with her for a week. I even slept on the floor our last night in there, trying to get closer to this little wild child. It worked, as she slept on my leg and purred all night! The next day we moved into my bedroom. It was a pretty rough time for me, almost regretting my decision to bring home a kitten that we absolutely did not need or want, eating Campbell's cream of tomato soup for dinner by myself on Thanksgiving, stressing about how it would all fit together, worrying about our stray cat Mercer in Miramonte, being alone in a house with no heat (it was summer when we left and the pilot light hadn't been lit yet) and just missing my other cats and Eric...it was just a really crappy time full of stress, loneliness, self-doubt, and a lot of "what the hell was I thinking??" Meanwhile, we realized we could never just leave Mercer behind in Miramonte, and had to get him fixed so Eric could bring him home to Oakland. Eric got that taken care of, and 2 weeks later he arrived home on December 10th with our 2 cats Mae and Apollo, and our new boy Mercer. We were super nervous about how everyone would feel about a new kitten, and how Mercer would do being cooped up in a strange house, and about a million other things.

As it turned out, we shouldn't have worried about any of those things! This was the scene on the couch the first night we were all together in the house...

IMG_3845.jpeg

That's me in the ridiculous sweater, Mae on my lap, Sundae curled up at my hip with her paws on top of Mercer's feet, and Mercer sleeping with his head on Apollo!
Almost every night since then it's been all 4 cats sleeping on our queen bed with us. Mercer and Sundae have become best friends! Even more inseparable than Apollo and Mercer were. When they're awake they are constantly playing, and Mercer is so good with her. When Sundae takes her kitty naps Mercer sits close by and guards her. When they're both sleeping they are always together. It's almost like they needed each other! Mae is 11, and ain't got time for any of this crap. She's fine as long as everyone leaves her alone, but even she has found herself getting caught up in kitty antics when she lets her guard down around Sundae 😸 Apollo wants to play with Sundae, too, but he doesn't know how to be gentle with her like Mercer is. Sundae, for her part, sees all this as totally normal and she just wants to be one of the big kids. She is at the vet today getting spayed and chipped, and I almost cried walking out to the car after dropping her off  All is well here in the Land of Too Many Cats, and we're all adjusting to this new chaotic life 🧡🖤🩶🧡

Warning: I have 1500 photos in my Sundae file so far, and probably more than that in my Mercer file, and I feel as though you all are entitled to see most of them! 😄

A crappy screen grab from the wi-fi camera I set up in the bathroom. I wanted to keep an eye on her when I wasn't in there, and I wanted Eric to be able to see her, too. Note: I am far too old to sleeping on a hard bathroom floor with nothing but a down blanket, but it was worth it. It was the first time Sundae looked relaxed when she was sleeping!

IMG_2194.jpeg

Yeah, Sundae says it's time to move into the bedroom!
IMG_2203.jpeg

Sundae's first night in the bedroom. I had to cover the mirror on the armoir and keep the shades closed on the windows because she was afraid of the reflections.

You go NeverEnoughKittysChick.

It's great that they all get along.

We are so amazed...and lucky!...that they are all thriving together. Mercer is stalking around the house today looking for Sundae. I mean he is actively looking everywhere for her, and he's not finding her, of course, because she's at the vet. He is very loudly letting everyone know he is not happy about his girl being gone!

They love playing on/in/under the sacrificial Ikea chair. I'd love to get rid of it but it's kind of like the kitty tower/scratching post/play structure now so...

Even Apollo is getting in on the action...

If you swap it out, they'll no doubt pick up on something you do care about, instead of that neat cat tree thing you buy them.

Bella was like that, we ended up buying her a chair solely for that purpose. She took to it, and we kept it until we lost her. I gave it away to a guy who had a MATCHING chair, he was going to get it reupholstered. Just glad to keep it out of a landfill.
