Yo,

Almost took a dude out today opening my driver's side door. I should've checked my mirror before I flung the door open, but duder probably shouldn't have been hugging the right side of the road either, especially on a downhill where bikes can keep up with cars.

Either way, a close call that could've ruined both of our days. My gf's dad hit a door while on his bicycle last year, landed on his face, KO'd, had to go to the hospital. He hasn't been quite the same since.

We tell people to watch for us; watch out for bicyclists too.

L8s.

Unless it's a dude wearing skinny jeans riding a single speed urban bike. Then feel free to door 'em.

Just kidding. I've been a racing cyclist for decades, and have ridden hundreds of thousands of miles and I can tell you the as little as drivers see motorcyclists, bicyclists are even less visible.

As the saying goes: Look twice- save a life.

I used a bicycle for transportation to work for almost 30 years, and am very familiar with what we used to call "getting doored". I found an interesting counter point to close calls. Just scream "EERRRRRREEEET", imitating the sound of a car locking it's brakes. The look on the faces of the drives is entertaining, and possibly serves as educational. :laughing

Was he doing 35+ in a 25? Cuz the last time I got yelled at by some fart-huffing cycle doofus, the dude was flying down a hill on a blind curve in a 25mph zone when I started to pull out from the curb.

Great tip! I used to commute on a bicycle everyday but I've been doored and maybe run into from behind (I say maybe bc I don't remember the accident well but the pedestrians said it was hit and run). I stopped doing it because it's so much safer on a moto.

Maybe this will help bring me back!

Also I've had close door calls on a moto too when lane sharing in the city. As a rider there's no excuse for not checking before you open, so just check. It's easy.

I had a door get whacked by a bicyclist years ago - the thing never did hang quite right again after that, AND the rider tried to shake me down for his damages.

The thing is, I was unloading the car, and I had left the door open - it had been open for about 5 minutes before the rider came along, hit it and claimed that I'd flipped it open right in front of him. While I was standing at the back of the vehicle, with the hatch open.

People.

But the Dutch Reach isn't a bad idea, actually.

Still the bicycles fault for hitting the car. Similar to how you are at fault if you hit a car that is parked illegally. Drivers are responsible for not hitting stationary objects.

yes please watch for cyclist. I'm one of them, it's my other two wheels.
