Salt water reef tanks.

:laughing

My sister had a boyfriend once who was really into it. He had all sorts of 5-gallon paint buckets next to the tank and it looked really ugly. I always figured you needed all that extra shit. However I know he didn't spend too much on his setup so I figured if I dumped more money into it I could have a cleaner setup. :dunno

I have 5 gallon water jugs I used for water transport in the garage. It would be easier if I could just junk up the family room with them but my wife would get annoyed in a hurry. She's already annoyed that this thing has turned into a bit of a money pit so having extra crap laying around really isn't an option for me.
I have room in the stand next to the pump to keep the scrapers, dry food, and some additives. I keep the water quality testing kits hidden under an end table in the same room. It's possible to do it really clean but just takes some research before you kick down with all the $$. This is something you want to try and get right the first time, trust me. Mine has cabinet doors under the tank where the sump lives and keeps things pretty clean. I'll take a photo later, don't have any 'full body shots' available right now. :p

I'm right with you on the research portion. When we move in this weekend I'll have some time to measure everything and see what I've got to work with.

I got a small 10 gal set up need to rehome if you're intersted, but probly not, sound like you're going big. If you are, let me know. Spending the weekend on the rides and the dog so the tank needs a better home.

I'd be all over your tank but 10 gal is WAY too small. I need at least a 60 for my living room. I'd also recommend against a small tank for a beginner unless all you're getting is one damsel.

there is a saltwater fish for dummies book, its pretty good yo should pick it up and will explain all the crap like protein skimmmers that people are talking about on here, but for the amount you are thinking of spending you can have a real nice tank. i would suggest keeping it to 100 gallon bcuz your going to spend a lot on putting fish coral ect in there after lighting filters ect are bought...

Corals for beginners? I wouldn't since they're about $30 a pop and you need to maintain your calcium, iodide, magneseum, etc. etc.

true true, but i mean once he has proper lighting and if he gets all the right equipment, and with 1500 budget you sure could get it all, couple months go by, everything smooth coral wud be fine.

Yep. I'd buy a copper butterfly fish first. Beautiful looking fish and if you can keep one alive for a month you can handle pretty much anything.

my fav fish are green(spoted) or physhicdelic mandrin, they are the coolest little fucking things. hard to feed and care for though.

Oh damn I forgot about those. If you can get one to eat then you're a reef master. My scooter blenny died a few days ago because it got caught in a crevase in my live rock. I had to get a hammer and chisel to break it free so I can flush it down the toilet.

I just got a killer deal on a porcupine puffer $15 but it has ich. No worries with a few weeks in QT with methylene blue and hyposalinity.

I spent around $1500 on the rock alone for my 100 gallon setup. The sky really is the limit when it comes to reef tanks. Just be prepared for lots of upkeep :)

The best single resource I've found is www.reefcentral.com. Don't be afraid to drive around the bayarea (including sacramento) to check out some shops. Find out what day there shipments come in on and make sure to visit as close to that day as possible.

Craigslist can be a good resource for finding parts etc......

I've had a salt water tank for about 1.5 years now.. The we have one huge clown fish feather dusters and a shrimp that keeps molting.. Lots of snails.. should be big enough to eat soon.. BBQ!!!

The coolest thing we had was a sea hair.. it ate everything!! but it died of old age..

Anyone want a free bursa trigger? It's about 4 inches and completely healthy. Eats krill, mysis and New Life Spectrum pellets. I'll post a pic of it later.

I had a fire in the sump area of my 100 gallon salt water tank. All the plugs to the skimmer, power heads, and return pump went up in flames. I don't have the money to replace the equipment right now so, sadly, my fish need new homes.

Pair of false pecula clowns paid $15 each a couple years ago- my favorites and are now full sized and a very happy pair.
Blue Hippo Tang- medium-small size- paid $50 about 9 months ago
5 or 6 Damsels, large pair all blue, two small blue with yellow tails, two small yellow.

Please come get them and be so kind to give me a reasonable price for them. Most importantly you need to have a good tank to put these guys in.

You can reach me by pm or ericscrabble at yahoo dot com

Must go asap, I don't want my fish friends to die. :(

Shit, I just replied in your grab bag thread.

Any chance a local shop could take them in for you until your tank is back up?
