Salt water reef tanks.

screw shrimp get some cheap damsels for like 4-5 bucks each. At least you will have something to look at. Plus they are like the cockroach of salt water fish they will live in anything.

How hard is it to make your own sump? I have a TON of fish tanks (like 600 gallons or so, in a lot of different sizes) leftover from when I was hurt and super into it. I have only done freshwater and would like to set one up as Salt water. I've been out of it for about 2 years I don't really know where to start!

the best place to go is a website called reef central . com that site has a ton of dyi stuff. I'm sure they got a section on how to make your own sump using a second tank.

I thought you wanted to start that tank up.:|

If you want, I'll be glad to help you set it up but it's not hard to fill a fish tank up with sand, rocks and water and then throw a shrimp in there and let it rot for 2 weeks.

Well, i would love to have it set up, and working properly. However, it has a sump pump and its super loud, thus, we've not run it for a while.

Perhaps I'll take a crack at it over the next couple of days to get it running....

yea my skimmer is pretty loud. Thankfully its down stairs. The little Nano in my room isn't very loud. I can't wait to pick up the 14gal nano from my friend so I can set it up. All it needs is to have the lights in the hood replaced which shouldn't be to bad. I wanted to upgrade the lights any way to stronger ones. Rel if you want a pump that isn't as loud honestly the best place to look is harbor freight and tool. They have all kinds of pumps there. Its a good place to go if you want to get a bigger pump for your tank a lot cheaper also.

Well, thats good to know... I'll take another shot at it.

You could do this too. I get damsels 3 for 5 bucks though. Geez I should open a fish store in Concord. Those guys are hosing you.:thumbdown

:p but might settle with having a freshwater "tank" with a Betta :p....might go around and either use the globe looking tank that i have for the betta already or buy a new one...or design a new one that incorporates a plant in the middle :teeth

an idea similar to what i was thinking...but only a more flatter tank *and in a different shape* and yeah...

look what you guys did...! :p

the long horn cow fish are cool but if it gets over stressed or picked on by other fish it can release a toxin and kill the tank lol.

:laughing ahahaha oh shite!

Cow fish are lame. They just float around, eat and poo.

:p ahaha rightfully named then...ahaha theyre just like cows :p

If you're going to get a saltwater tank with no corals start with a 55 gallon or so and get around 30 lbs of live sand and 40 pounds of Fiji live rock(the best because it's so porous). Cycle the tank with the live rock, a piece of dead shrimp or a few damsels and get yourself one of each of these fish: dwarf angel, trigger, damsel, chromis, butterfly, clown and whatever else you want. You can also do eels which are pretty cool especially the dragon moray but that thing costs like $1,000 for one but it's generally not a good idea to mix eels with fish unless the fish are too big to fit in the eels mouth.

Sump not necessary, just get a good canister filter rated for 70 gallons or more, a hang-on back skimmer rated for 70 gallons or more and a hang on reefugium. Get whatever lights are cheap but look good. A 10,000K T-5 with 2 or 3 daylight bulbs should work.

If you're doing corals get yourself a 30 gallon tank with a built in overflow(very important or your tank will look like ass) with a 15 gallon sump. 15 pounds live sand and 30 pounds live rock(whatever shape/size you like). Get yourself either a pendant for metal halide bulbs of you're growing corals with stony skeletons or a 50/50 daylight/actininc strip with 2 or 4 bulbs. Cycle that bish with with the rocks, shrimp or damsels and monitor your calcium levels until pink and purple algae start growing on your glass then get whatever corals/fish/worms/crabs/shrimp you want. watch out for non-reef safe stuff or you can kiss your corals, fish and invertebrates goodbye.

I think I might pick up some cheap fish just so I have something to look at in the 6 gal tank. This weekend I should be picking up the 14 gal. I just need to get some lights for it then let the take cycle.

;) look on craigslist...some folks are giving out free tanks and tank supplies...that and selling fishes on there too :teeth
