Salt water reef tanks.

I think I might pick up some cheap fish just so I have something to look at in the 6 gal tank. This weekend I should be picking up the 14 gal. I just need to get some lights for it then let the take cycle.

Just take all the old sand, rocks and water from the 6 and dump it in the 14 and you don't need to cycle..

true. Im going to be going to that sf fish store on Sunday to get some stuff. I need to get lights for the 14 gal

Sweet. I'll take that 6 gal if you don't want it and I can show you all the good places in SF where you'll get a good deal but they all close at 5:00 on Sunday.

I'm going to the place that does the bag sales on sundays. I'll give you the 6 gal but it might be a little while I need to get the 14 up and running before I get ride of the 6 gal. I'm on a very limited budget and need to buying lighting for 14

I went to that store and they have some great sales. I ended up getting 5 fish for 36 and some change. I picked up a black and white clown a little hippo tang and 3 different kinds of damsels. The clown and hippo will go in my 65 the damsels will go in the 6 gal. I picked up the 14 gal in san jose from my friend. I'll start setting it up tomorrow.

The yellow tail died a week ago. I'm never buying fish from 6th ave again. 3/5 fish I bought there died.:thumbdown

My friend bought a bunch of fish (2 clowns, blue damsel, and royal dottyback) all die and he bought them from 6th ave. But I took him to aquatraders in san bruno to buy the same fish and they are still alive to this day :dunno

Hmm the damsels I got today I don't really care to much about. I got them to have something to look at in my 6 gal and to put in the 14 as it cycles so Im expecting them to die. The clown and the blue hippo are a different story. I'll just play it by ear and see how they are. I'm still acclimating them right now. I'm going to try and spend as much time as I can doing that. Its been about 2.5 hours so far. I'm shooting for about 5 or so hours of slow acclimation to give them the best chance at living that I can.

Edit.

Well just finished acclimating them. I put the 3 damsels into my 63 gal nano they are swimming around fine. I put the clown and hippo in the 65. After swimming the length of the tank a few times the hippo started eating right off the bat picking at some algae on the rocks. It was good seeing her eat. I've heard it can be hard to get them to eat at first. The clown is just chillin in one part of the tank. I'll keep my fingers crossed. If only the hippo lives then I will be happy.

any pics of the "hippo"? never seen one before besides the huge water pig looking one from the zoo :p

I had saltwater for a while, at one point i had a snowflake eel, lion fish, clown fish, a couple damsels, and a coral beauty, with assorted decor and anenomes. Got marine itch...everything died in 2 days :( tried to get it going again after it all died. Never had the same luck. For some reason everytime i tried to get my tank going i would always have extremely high algae levels and my water just wouldnt be "perfect". I loved saltwater but it just got to expensive trying over and over to get it to work.

o0o0o0o0o0 ahahah now i know watcha talking about :thumbup

I need to head over to my local fish store when they open and get some more salt water and try to find a nice choice rock to put in the 14 gal. I don't want to keep much rock in it because so its easy to clean, I'm only going to be keeping a dwarf lion in it with some snails and crabs.

Don't let the lion choke on them. Had that happen to a buddy of mine once.

Yea there wont be much rock so I'm sure I will be able to get by with getting large hermit crabs and snails.

That was back when I was coming back to the hobby but 6th ave isn't that bad. If you know how to pick your fish and you set up a quarantine/hospital tank before you introduce to the display tank. You can also sneak your food in and feed the fish to check if they eat.

yea you do need to check the fish out first. The hippo I got ate right away. It started eating in my tank after just a few min.

Here are some pics of the new guys to my 65 gal tank. A cool looking black clown.
