Well, I've been in Finland 2 months, but I haven't been doing much shooting. It's kinda been a mix of being busy, the lack of motivation that arises when you don't see the sun for weeks at a time, and finally that it's really freaking cold. So, not worth doing a dedicated thread like I did for my Japan travels.

Oh, and my wonderful 5Dii is all messed up. Jacked up the autofocus trying to do a drunken wheelie on a bicycle in Japan :facepalm. Gotta send it in to CPS when I get back to the states. For now, forgive my poorly focused photos.

Haha, yea, we've had several -25 Fahrenheit days... it's a bit rough when you only have a bicycle. On the other hand, the people are great. I've made more great friends here than I have in a few years in grad school in the US. I think it's just that people are so genuine, and they're not trying to impress anyone. It's definitely the bright spot in the cold, dark winter. I'm wanting to come back during a summer to get a better feel for the country.

Anyway, my wife was around for a couple weeks over the holiday. We spent a few days in Stockholm and a couple in Helsinki before heading back to Oulu.

Stockholm is incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately the weather was kinda dreary so some of pictures are not that great.

The Vasa in Stockholm. It was such an amazing museum with tons of awesome history. In short, the Vasa was the pride of the Swedish fleet when built in the 1600's. The only problem was that it was poorly designed, and sunk 2 miles into its maiden voyage. It sat at the bottom of the Baltic before being raised in the 1950's (and awesome story in itself).

Pretty gnarly cannon ball. Made me shudder a bit.

Stopped at the Nobel Museum... not bad, but the current exhibit wasn't one that we were too interested in.

Had a beer at Monk's Cafe. I asked what they brewed there in a IPA/pale. The bartender gave me this. It was an okay pale, but it cost $14. Stockholm was insanely expensive, although still quite an amazing city.

My wife was born and raised in hot climates (Kenya, the Galapagos Islands, Mexico, Davis, etc.), so the Finnish winter was quite tough for her.

Suomenlinna Island in Helsinki. Again, some cool history there. It was freaking cold, though!
IMG_8794-XL.jpg

They had 1000 canons on the island when it was first created. The Russians still managed to take it over, though.

We spent NYE morning hanging out around a fire and eating some food.

Later we did a bit of ice fishing.

Definitely not as cool as the Snow, but a fun day at the zoo none the less :laughing

Great pics.

The Vasa was impressive to see, it is amazing so much of it survived and what they did to preserve it as it was recovered. The surveying geek in me was also intrigued by the way they monitor it for movement:teeth

Thanks everyone. Koi - how are you liking the 70-300?

Anyway, I'm trying to avoid writing a grant, so I figure I'd post some pictures from Mexico. My in-laws live down there, so my wife and I visit quite often. What I would do to be down there in the sun!

Some are lower res as I pulled them off my facebook since the originals are on my desktop back in the states.

The courtyard of my in-laws place in San Miguel de Allende. What I would give to be there now drinking a beer and reading a book!

So far it's amazing.

Having a zoom lens compared to the kit lens is an amazing upgrade. I like the fluidity of the lens as well as the focus is easy to control by hand or auto.

The image stabilization is also a huge bonus and will be nice come racing season.

Just picked up some filters, a PL and a ND. Never used them before so excited to start messing around with that and seeing what they can do.

But so far, quite impressed with it.

Here's some from a College Bowl game in SF.

From across AT&T park.
