SHOEI RF-1000 VS. RF-1100 Sizing!

I don't care about the law...just saying. For a novice rider, it would be safer and more comfortable.

you're right lol, i was just trying to be hard headed. =], but shes 5'3 the 250 is low enough. she'll be dandy.

I hope so! If not I'll just wear some really thick and high shoes......ahah :p Why is saturday so far?!

id just get the rf-1100, its snell 2010 certified, eventually trackday providers and race organizations will update their snell requirements.

id love to get a diabolic zero color scheme for the rf-1000 again (its in my avatar), instead for the same price i got a plain white rf-1100

the snell rating means THAT much to ME

The statistic I've heard from a Shoei Rep was that 9/10 riders buy a helmet that's too lose. If the helmet feels fine when you try it on, there's a good chance it's a little on the large side.

A major mistake a lot of riders make is that they buy the wrong shell shape, forcing them to go a little larger than necessary with sizing, which results in visibility problems, wind-lift, floppiness, and reduces impact protection.

Update: So I was supposed to wait until tomorrow to go try on the helmets to see.. but I couldn't help it! Today right after my midterm I went straight to the bike shop to figure out my sizing! Unfortunately they had no more RF1000's since the newer one is the 1100's. So I tried on the Small RF-1100 again, and I realised that it might be a bit too big. It was moving a little bit around my head, and I'm sure that once I break into them, It'll be too loose. It was Snug, felt comfortable, But I feel like it wasn't snug enough.

So then I tried the X-Small. It was tight, my Cheeks were super squished, and I felt like chipmunk. But I figure that's fine since youre supposed to break into them anyway, right? But the thing I DID notice was the 2 pressure points people were talking about! Especially when I clenched my jaws, I'd feel the two points on the shell on my head. Super uncomfortable. After having it on for awhile I had to take it off because I was starting to get a headache.

Now, these 2 pressure points, is it just an RF-1100 Thing? Because I think if it wasn't for that then it would have been okay. If I got an RF-1000 x-small, without it having the 2 pressure points, n possibly switching out thinner cheek pads, I'm wondering if it would be okay.

In terms of the 1100's, I know for sure the x-small isn't for me because of the 2 pressure points and I felt like my head was suffocating. And the Small might actually be TOO big!

Ahh. So complicated :(

On a brighter note, I think I'm buying my very first beginner bike tomorrow :D 2007 Ninja 250. Yippee!

But I can't try to ride it until I have a helmet....... -___-

Pressure points are a fit thing. You seem to have a small frame, so there is a very real possibility that you take a XS size helmet - my SO is the same size, and has found a few XS (HJC esp) are actually too large for her.

If I recall correctly, the RF1100 has an extended oval shape - good for people with a fairly long head. You might benefit from a rounder helmet. According to WebBikeWorld, the bell Bell Arrow is a round shape, so it might be worth a try.

Web bike world has a list of helmets, with weight and sizing info if you're interested.

She has a Suomy head =]

Your cheeks being squished when you first put on the helmet is normal. Wouldn't worry about that. Just based on your descrption of the small moving a little on your head means its definitely too big.

Yeah, why are you set on a Shoei? Which other brands have you tried?

Ace Motorsports still has some Suomy helmets on sale for 50% off...otherwise, I'd seriously look into Arai.

The folks at Cycle Gear San Jose are pretty good at fitting a helmet for you. I suggest going there to take out some of the guess work. from the description, is sounds like the xs is a little too small. Don't be afraid to try other brands.

Informationally, I have heard of people using the back side of a spoon to form the helmet to the contours of a particular head, ie the two pressure points. But probably better to buy a helmet w/o pressure points.

So, how did helmet shopping go? Did you pick up your new bike yesterday?

Helmet shopping was basically testing my sizes out again. I'm definitely an X-Small in all brands.

BUT the x-small in RF1100 is TOO small. I may be a SUomy head but they had no xsmalls for me to try... STILL STUCK on deciding!!

Order a Suomy xsmall or order a SHOEi RF1000 x small?

As for my bike, YES I got my very first beginner 06 blue Ninja 250 yeterday :) I had 2 experienced rider friends who know mechanics well with me and says there are very minor problems that can be easily fixed for cheap, and I'd have to say I got the bike for a very very very VERY good price :teeth:banana I am a happy happy camper!!!

Just need my gear now!
