So whats the deal with Starbucks?

Any particular reason you guys get your fix on at the 'bucks? Is location and access to certain routes a major factor? Are Starbucks generally really easy to find?

cause i know for damn sure it aint the coffee:cry

/waves tentacles

I think it's because there are more of them and they are more centrally located to certain areas than Hooter's...

I don't drink coffee, or beer for that matter, go figure... But I go to Starbucks because I like their desserts and the Green Tea Frappucino's are great when it's not quite this cold out... Breakfast sandwiches are good too!

They treat their employee's fairly well, yes. But they also have a history of moving in next to or right across the street from existing shops and putting them out of business. They undercut their prices and people are seduced by that and all the glitz of the big chain. Pretty soon the mom and pop have to close shop. Yea, it's business. But they purposely target existing coffee shops. I've seen it. That's the part I really don't like.

This is precisely what happened in Danville. We had a cool dude that roasted his own beans, had a cool little shop here for years. If I forgot my wallet he'd just say "catch me tomorrow'. His coffee was superior to that crap at Starbucks. I used to wake up and smell the coffee roasting down the street.

Then, the Evil Empire moved in down the street. Of course, the stupid rich yuppies all went over there, because that is what they are programmed to do.
Anyway, it was no big deal until the Town of Danville (cocks) let them open ANOTHER Starbucks on the other side of the dude.
6 months later we said goodbuy to our local coffee roastery.

F*&K YOU TOWN OF DANVILLE!!!:mad

Thing is, Danville is sensitive about letting the chains come into town, but for some reason, they let "Bucks come in.

We also used to have a couple local hardware stores. Until HomoDepot came in. Goddamn corporate f*%ktards. Now I can't find the bolt I need to save my life. I have to drive to Berkeley to find a decent hardware store for cristsake.

If you live in a nice place, with cool local businesses and whatnot, and you want to destroy that town, then let one of these guys come in.:thumbup

I had a friend who's parents were huge commune-style hippies and actually named him Starbuck (he was born in the 70's). He used to get a lot of shit in middle school for having such a strange name.

As if the irony isn't painful enough already, I always wonder if the kids that made fun of him ever drink frappaccinos.

before this totally get beat to shit...

OK, soap box, Is this in the Kitchen Sink yet?

This touches a really important and timely subject. This is one of the issues that the democratic presidential candidates are talking about.

Corporate control of our economy. Read Michael Polen, “The Omnivores Dilemma”. Read Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”. A few big corporations control the food production in this country, and affect the world. (affect?).

According to “The Economist”. The amount of corn it takes to make the ethanol to fill the average SUV’s tank would feed a person for a year.

I could go on. We are all in for some real challenges. Food is really cheap, Think of it, you just go to the store and buy all this good stuff for a few bucks that came from all over the world and a lot of people put a lot of sweat into. It's friggin' cheap. Fish from New Zealand? Water from Fiji? Does this make sense? Its all gonna change.

Just to really appreciate what we’ve done, read “The Cadillac Desert” by Marc Reisner.

Challenges ahead. You guys are in charge.

Wow...depressing. Think I will go slit my wrists now....or read "Revelations" again.... OR GO TO STARBUCKS AND ORDER A DOUBLE SHOT CARMEL CHAI FRAPICHINO LATTE NO WHIP 180 WITH A SNICKER DOODLE! :teeth

Only reason is group rides have a start at a Starbux. I don't drink coffee, let alone fancy pants coffee.
Group rides autta start at Denny's or Cafes. Sure could go for a grand slam breakfast.

IMHO, Grand Slam breakfasts are the *$'s of the breakfast world. I'm really not a fan of either *$'s or Dennys. But they're both easy to find, and usually decent meeting places. As long as you don't eat there. :p

I should open a coffee shop. I could name the quad mocha "The Knee Dragger."

A guy in San Diego, opened a small chain called The Pannakin and ran it successfully for quite a few years. He was also a major motorcycle enthusiast. His kids didn't want to run the chain, so he sold it off and kept the roasters. Last I heard, he was selling Roadburner coffee out of a small office on G street. Ask for it by name. ;)

Geez why do so many people miss this? It's so simple people. :rolleyes It's a mermaid...put it together.

'Cause you know.... Mermaids drink so much coffee. And sushi. :rofl

Starbucks is 200 feet from my office, can't resist.

I was in North Carolina couple weeks ago, asked somebody where the nearest Starbucks was, they looked at me like I was crazy.
