Someone explain Britney Spear's conservatorship deal!

Good he's stepping down, but who will be chosen to fill his slot (and why?)

Brittany's still getting shafted.

I'm tired of white collar criminals just slinking away unpunished. I feel like it happens way too much.
+1

We see that all of the time, especially politicians who are allowed to go off and enjoy the spoils from their corruption without any fear of prosecution and leaving the mess they created behind.

I'm still unhappy that this state allowed that corrupt criminal Quackenbush to just go off and enjoy his retirement after screwing Californians for $Billions.

Criminal is an interesting word when it comes to civil matters

Fully agree though

I steal from my employer and it's a crime, they intentionally short my paycheck and it's civil... world we live in

Yeah, Calling things "civil" vs criminal kinda proves the point don't it? Wrong is wrong damn it.

It looks like Mr. Spears had already been in the process of transitioning himself out of the conservatorship, as of mid last year, with the Judge at that time extending it to September 2021, but transitioning on an interim co-conservator she requested (an institution which has since resigned because they don't want to be involved in this big mess.)

So his exit doesn't seem to be a sudden reaction to a threat (although positioning it that way certainly is good PR for Britney's cause.)

Apparently he was getting paid $16k/month to be her conservator.

Since at least February 2009—one year after her father, Jamie, was named the conservator in charge of her estate—Spears has had to pay him $16,000 each month, according to court documents reviewed by Forbes. Over 12 years, that compensation has totaled $2.4 million.

Additionally, a report this week from the New York Times, pointed to the fact that he also collected portions of her touring revenue—which could explain Spears’ accusations that she was forced to work and perform despite not wanting to or feeling sick. Those payouts for Jamie Spears included 1.5% of the gross ticket and merchandise sales from Britney Spears’ popular Piece of Me residency that ran from 2013–17 in Las Vegas. That show grossed $137.7 million, according to Caesars Entertainment, leaving Jamie Spears’ cut at $2.1 million. The Times also reported that Jamie Spears got a 2.95% commission off of her 2011 Femme Fatale tour. While it’s unclear if that is a percentage of gross revenue or just of Spears’ take-home earnings, he would have made at least $500,000 from the tour.

In addition to the millions Britney Spears has paid her father as part of a court-ordered “salary,” she has also had to pony up for several other expenses. There’s the nearly $300,000 she’s spent renting her father an office for $2,000 per month, and hundreds of thousands—if not millions—in legal fees. As part of a quirk of conservator arrangement, conservatees are often required to pay for both their own attorneys and those of their conservators.

It's no wonder he didn't want to give it up, he's lived a very, very comfortable life off of her talent.

I'm no expert but I think Britney should have an IME (independent med/psych examination) to confirm she even still needs a conservatorship. If so, the court should appoint a special counsel to oversee the conservator and the conservatorship. Someone who only answers to the Court. (That's the way I've seen it done in local courts for incompetent cases I've worked on.) That way there's less of a chance the family will abuse the conservatorship.

wouldn't that be a great job to have? Examine someone for mental competence.
Maybe my next career.

$16K per month is not that much, considering her wealth. A normal trustee would or could charge 1% per year. 1% of $36MM is $30K per month.

If her portfolio is managed well, it should easily earn 5-6% per year. And that would be extremely conservative management.

tl;dr but my skim didn't reveal my viewpoint so...

It could be that Britney Spears avoided incarceration with the agreement to have this conservatorship arrangement.

Yes, it could be argued that she's 'served her time' and has sufficiently become responsible enough to dissolve continuation of the original court ruling.

On a care rating, I'm about a...

I don't give a shit to what happens with Brittany.

However, I do give a shit that our 'justice' system could get so twisted around and used to enslave somebody for another's personal gain.

Best news of the month so far!
