Tats from the tattoo braggin thread - split by Bap

Having just had a horrible reaction to using Aquafor and needing to practically get my whole chest piece redone, I am +infinity on this. Went back to using H2Ocean as I have on my most recent pieces and I will never use anything else. I got the tat touched up last Saturday and I'm already 100% healed and you wouldn't even know that I had a bad reaction with the aquafor.

What is aquafor?

What is aquafor?

aquaphor is like a mild, medicated vaseline. its all i use on my tattoos for the first few days. aides in healing. then after 2 days or so of aquaphor, i switch over to unscented lotion.

Thanks! :)
It's kinda ouchy... and I already bumped it once this morning (holy crap that hurt!)...

I was told it would scab over a bit in a couple of days... does anyone know if that happens with all tattoos? The only time I bled at all was during the shading part... so maybe mine won't get scabby? Cuz that's kind of gross...

Here is what I did. Use a very light coating of Aquaphor for the first 3 days, then switched to a good lotion that is fragrance free. I used Aveeno myself and love it.

Hand wash the Tattoo 2 times a day for the first week with a anti-bacterial hand soap. Pat dry or let air dry. Wait like 20m before putting on the lotion/Aquaphor.

Doing this you should only peel like a sunburn and should not scab at all. Scabbing is a direct result of the heavy handed tattoo artist or poor care after the tattoo. Technically if everything is done right you should not get any scabbing at all.

Keep lotion on it for the first month. I plan to lotion mine for the rest of my life but with a lotion that has a sun block in it. The sun will fade it faster than anything over time.

Don't pic, scratch or rub. If it itches then slap the shit out of it a couple times and it will stop.

Your ink looks nice but just keep in mind that the white pearl will fade first and fast as White is very hard to have stick as a primary color. You will probably need to get it touched up quite often. You might want to think about putting some black with some fade to simulate a pearl then have the white added. That way when/if the white fades out you will still have a pearl outline.

Aquaphor is not recommended to heal.

Sorry but disagree. It's one of the most recommended products by tattoo parlors across the world. Just for the first few days and of course very light but yeah.

Are there other options? You bet.

I just finished a real sleeve and used it after each setting for 3 days as indicated and I healed like a champ within a week of my sittings with no scabbing and very little peeling. This is my personal experience of course. However, that does not change the fact that you can do a simple Google search for "Tattoo Aftercare" and see the results. Any link recent will usually recommend Aquaphor.

But honestly there are simply many ways and products you can use or not use and it's up to personal preference. I recommend Aquaphor only because I did a LOT of research on the topic prior to my sleeve to ensure I healed correctly. I'm sure there are many other ways to achieve the same thing.

That's very close to what Tash wants me to do to take care of it.
I am NOT slapping the tattoo if it itches... OMFG that would hurt. I'd rather it was itchy! :|
For the record, though, it's not itchy, and it doesn't appear to be scabby at all! :)
Yeah, he told me the white would fade really fast... he wanted to do the pearl in a pale grey, but I dug in my heels, I wanted the white. We'll see how it works out.
And yeah, he was adamant that I have to use sunscreen on it forever, because the sun wrecks tattoos, so that's fine.
It definitely feels better than it did on Friday, and the skin that was kind of red has gone to a pale pink, so it looks like it's doing well! I bumped it a couple of times yesterday at the AFM booth (I was working at the IMS), and holy crap did that hurt!!!
But it's much less fussy today, so I'm happy! :)

Best part, though, is that Josie really liked it... and 3 days later, I'm still just pleased as punch at the way it turned out! :banana

Robert has a faceful of tatts. Me thinks he may be onto something. :p

he is also a know-it-all.
dude that owns the shop i used to work at has a full body suit and had aquaphor by the tub. tons of people swear by it and use it with great success. just because one person yells "no", doesnt mean you should discount it.

I have used Aquafor on all 4 of my tattoos. It has worked well enough for me with no complications. I have not used anything else so I cannot compare it to anything else.

I am sure most artists have their own treatment programs. Consult YOUR artist for best results.

I just rub mine with salt and lemon juice. Bunch pansies using ointment :hand

Ive been getting tattooed for 23 years. I work with professional tattooers daily. I just relay what works for me and what ive been taught. Doesnt mean it works for everyone. Hence why i said "recommended".

Oh I'm sure he has other ways and not saying he does not. Only saying I disagree 100% that Aquaphor is not to be used for healing.

Because there are so many different ideas out there on this subject I did hours of research trying to determine the after care for my sleeve. I was simply not going to spend thousands of dollars only to screw it up by not giving myself the proper care.

The end result was as I described and for me it worked like a champ with no issues and perfect healing. To me that is all the proof I need and is why I suggest it. By far Aquaphor was the most suggested from any recent article on the topic of which healing ointment to use. Sure there were other solutions as well but I stuck with what I found to be the most tried and true method for after care.

While doing my after care research I came across a really good article on using Magnets to help with the healing. So after sitting for 6-7 hours at a time I would lay my arm on magnets placed under a towel and sleep with them as well and by the next day all swelling and pain was gone and I would use them for the first week. Pretty good if you ask me and thus I recommend magnets as well for the swelling and pain.

So again, not knocking him but just disagreeing with his statement that Aquaphor is never to be used for healing. It simple goes against everything I have read on the topic.

Sorry I took the recommended commit to be a never comment. My bad.

It comes down to: The tat, like any wound to the skin, needs to heal. Petrol/greasy products don't allow the skin to breathe. A&D is fine for the first day. Keep it clean (soap and water), don't pick at it and keep it moisturized but not slathered with an oil based product. If it itches: take a benadryl tab and stay hydrated. :2cents
