The debate about gear rages on

The one thing I can think of that makes motorcycles at this speed more dangerous than bicycles is that they're much heavier and I don't want one to fall on me.

You're still risking your life in your way so chill out when someone else risks his life in a slightly different way.

Yeah, pinning your leg between a 400+lb hot motorcycle and the pavement is just a tad different then a 25lb bicycle.

On your second point. Here's the "I'm only hurting myself" thing I keep talking about.

Well written post though :thumbup

Oh, and our taxes and insurance premiums pay for your care, so your accident avoidance reduces our costs.

This kind of thinking leads to motorcycles being made illegal by the car driving majority who know that even ATGATT riders are a public burden compared to a cager.

Other public burdens would include track day enthusiasts (both car and bike), mountain climbers, hang gliders, sky divers, surfers, etc. The list of things that are inherently dangerous is endless.

It's not that you're wrong to note that squids absorb more risk that ATGATTers, it's that no matter what you do, there is always someone that takes less risks than you and looks at you as stupid and foolish.

I see it as simply an issue of people not accepting our differences. Risk aversion is a difference of personality. It's not a question of intelligence or correctness.

BTW, your argumentum ad hominem are getting stronger. I'm starting to feel for my safety around you.

I'm starting to feel that you're irrational.

Cut it however you want, pull isolated anecdotes and momentary discomforts. Motorcycling the in the US is mostly a hobby. If proper tyres and insurance are required to ride a motorcycle, what exactly is the beef with extending that to a minimum standard of jacket, trousers, boots and gloves?

You're arguing from the specific (your case) to the general (everyone else). For many, motorcycling is a transportation choice that represents the best blend of cost, flexibility and efficiency in getting from point A to point B.

Maybe it was in this thread, maybe it was in another, but I once saw someone post something to the effect of "Everyone is some other persons idiot, regardless of how safe they are." Sounds true to me.

Just to add some fuel to the fire. Evil Knievel, idiot or not? ATGATTers may contest he was not an idiot, for he took all the proper precautions to minimize injury. But yet he broke 35 bones in his body and had over 14 surgeries. He also spent a total of 36-months in the hospital. He also holds a Guinness Book of World Records spot for his injuries. So, who is responsible for your higher insurance premiums? The non ATGATT rider who doesn't go down, or the ATGATT stunt devil who biffs it all the time? Quite frankly, I think they even out. It comes back to the rider, not the gear. :Popcorn

I'd imagine it's the people who wheelie onto their own feet. Those guys are a menace.

Also, you're just trying to prolong the "argument" (it's not much of one) now. Quit trolling.

This thread was dead for the longest. Then, 68 more posts were placed since my last one, including from YOU. New folks chimed in with opinions and brought up some different points for both sides of the discussion. I liked the points that Kerpoo made. Now I decide to re enter the conversation with a supporting statement and new point and you call me a troll? Seriously bro, examine yourself before you throw stupid internet terms around at people like that. It's not productive or interesting. Who truly is the troll/baiter?

My point about Evil Knievel is valid, and raises a good question. I'd like to see if anyone has some supporting points or counter claim to what I've brought up, regarding the insurance and ATGATT.

The debate only rages on because of idiotic threads like this one, bearing such asinine titles as "The Debate About Gear Rages On..."

Yo braking dan'l- if you ever need any comebacks that will surely piss off your crew of hataz but will probably get you suspended, pm me. :twofinger

If you did you'd research it.

There's no debate about gear saving lives (and feet).

There's no debate about rider training saving lives.

There's no debate about riding sober being superior.

There's no debate about having a proper line of sight.

There's no debate about having your machine in proper working order.

There's no debate that riding within ones limitations (fyi 160 on the highway is never within ones limits on the street) is safer.

There's no debate, period.

We're all adults and can do what we like, this does not change any of the above.

I label you a troll because the truth of the moment happens to fit whatever it is you happen to be doing. But tell a different story in each thread and continue to wonder why you're not really getting any respect.

Right, but mine is stock. I literally meant that I, personally, am not breaking the law. Stock exhaust, ride the speed limit, stop at all signals etc...

I also have a confession to make. Recently while going up 101N during off traffic hours, a CHP car pulled a traffic stop right in front of me. All of the traffic was completely stopped and I was at the front of the line while the two officers cleared some roadway debris (several folding tables). The traffic block was eventually released, and had resulted in a several mile section of pristine highway with out a single car on it. The CHP exited the very next exit which was only 100 feet ahead. As I conducted a risk assessment, I concluded that a quick WOT sprint was safe enough at that time. By end, I went 160 (according to my digital speedometer, so probably more like 140 :mad I hate digital speedometers for this reason)..

Respect? Lol. You are too funny. I'm not a karma whore (as Redditor's call it) or here for your respect. Some common decency and a respectful conversation would be nice though. Nor do I wonder about anything in regards to how 'internet people' think about me. They tend to voice it loud and clear. Though many have supported me both publicly and privately. Which is exactly what is so damn funny about you. You forget that there are others with a difference of opinion than yours. If someone (like me) posts an unpopular BARF opinion, you jump on the bandwagon to troll the shit out of them in every post they make, even though you yourself continue to post in the same "troll thread" long after I stop to. <<<Seriously, explain yourself for that one before you even TRY to relate me to a troll or anything else of that nature again. Your pathetic and most likely have led a lonely and dismal existence, therefore you reach out to people online in a negative manner in an attempt to be superior in some way. If you think that assessment of you is wrong, then prove it. Either here or in real life.

I make that ridiculous judgement and assessment of you to prove a point. People online are fucking stupid, myself included. No matter how hard we try, we don't act like our real selves when we are online. I think some of us (you and me) are a lot like our real selves, but so much of who we truly are gets lost in the text. I'm aware of that fact, but you seem not to be. Try to understand that you don't know a fucking thing about me bud, and I don't know jack shit about you. Maybe then you'll stop assuming I'm a troll and calling me out for shit while failing to realize that you are guilty of the same (posting in the thread long after the discussion cooled off).

Please look at this not as an attack, but as an attempt on my behalf to get both of us to come to terms that we probably don't really understand each other, and have both made some mistakes here. Maybe then we could get over it. :thumbup

Pardon me for wanting to have a fucking conversation on an INTERNET FORUM.

I think a troll just got owned. :laughing

And YOU! :teeth Quit egging it on. Your statement of "I think a troll just got owned" is the 'trollingest' most 'baiting' statement anyone here has made. :twofinger

I'm not trying to start drama with you, but seriously though, it is.

I've met him in person and I've also invited all of BARF to my HOUSE. I'm not sure that the "internet tough guy" get's any credibility around these parts and claiming that internet anonymity is the reason for being a dick :)twofinger) really means a damn thing on BARF. We're real people with real opinions and a good % of us are the same in-person as we are online. Honest.

You're not the first sanctimonious person who's come on here to stimulate discussion - and you won't be the first one to leave.

:twofinger :wtf :teeth :thumbup :p < ---- that somehow makes it better

Who do you think is trying to be an internet tough guy? Me or Mr. Incredible? I don't think either of us is. I think people inherently are different online due to other peoples perception. A lot gets lost in the text. Either way, if some people like Mr. Incredible actually call people drama-queens/kings (real life version of a troll) every time someone has a different opinion then he truly would be an asshole in real life. Plus he'd probably not be very successful or have any friends if he acted that way. So I doubt he actually does that in real life.

Either way, I'm not going anywhere. It would be nice if I could post without having people like Mr. Incredible immediately have to jump in and call me a troll for asking a fucking question or posting an idea/theory. It's pathetic and very much fits the M.O. of an internet stalker. "Oh Breaking Daniel posted something, I had better start some shit over it on a personal level because he has a difference of opinion from mine."
