The Electric Motorcycle Thread

paging Hades

I'm seeing used Segway 160X going for $2000-$3000, 260X for $4000-$6000 and Sur Ron X going around $4000. What's the big differences between the 260X and Sur Ron that command such a big difference in prices?

The Sur Ron Light Bee X and Segway X260 are pretty much the same bike. The Segway has some fancy bluetooth system to it but other than the badging and the price they are pretty much the same.

The X160 is the same as the Light Bee S which we don't get in the US. The X160 is a slower smaller version of the X260. It's more geared towards children. It has a lower voltage battery 48V vs 60V. It has smaller wheels also 17 vs 19. It also has less shock travel in the rear. Less power and range than the X260. A popular thing to do is to buy the X160 because it's cheaper and use that saved money to modify it with better suspension, controller, battery, etc... So if you are planning to make it faster and better the X160 is a good deal.

Also color is different. At some point Luna Cycle only imported black Light Bees so you'll see a lot of black bikes, kinda ugly I've seen em. You have a few color choices with the Segways. When the Sur Ron had colors you can get Carbon (the one I have, Red, Blue, and silver. Might be more.

Sounds like the X160 should be more similar in size to say a 24" cruiser BMX bicycle. Not bad really.... especially since that's about where I wanted to use it, hidden tucked away dirt jumps and a little urban hooning.

Hades will jizz over this.

I still don't see it happening in America any time soon. And i would bet that even for adopting markets the batteries will be more for scooters than motorcycles.
Agreed that it will be mostly scooters, I don't see any issue with that. EV motorcycles that try to pursue really high performance would probably need multiple of these batteries, especially to have a reasonable range, and might be better off with an integral battery.

This makes a lot of sense in countries where motorcycles and scooters are mostly a means of commuter transportation. This may be tried in a few metro areas in the US, you probably won't seem them in rural areas anytime soon.

I have not read the full thread, so apologies if this has already been discussed...

I see pedal kits that can be used to convert a SurRon to be an ebike. This is probably a gray area, but can SurRon bikes be taken on BART (assuming they are converted to ebike status). Anyone with real world experience doing this?

I just took the Arcimoto on it’s longest journey so far, a 116 mile round trip from Talmage to Middletown. For me it was an abbreviated version of our annual “Redbud Run”, a ride that the Usual Suspects have been doing since 1986. I kept the speeds down and made it to Middletown with 24% charge remaining, recharged at the Calpine Visitors Center while the Suspects feasted at Beulah’s Kitchen. The rest of the crew continued on to Pope Valley, Berryessa, Knoxville, Lower Lake, I headed back to Talmage, the Cagiva made it home in a pickup after dark, good times.

I went for a ride yesterday and overextended my stay. I had to walk home and get the truck. Fortunately it was all uphill.

Wait.

More detail

I look at everything I can with humor. And there is always a good side.
This made me laugh; it was no big deal.
I rode up Hamilton yesterday and turned around about a mile from the top at just less than half indicated charge. That ride (to the top, turnaround) is 20 miles and 4000 vertical. I did not quite make it home.
Close but... The last quarter mile is about 300 vertical uphill.
The EXSM went into blinkymode about three miles from home. Almost home, it went into limp mode then 50 yards later then it was it was no go.
I found a good driveway, met some neighbors, parked the bike, walked home and got the truck. It was amusing. Neighbors were cool.

I looked at the odo. 29 miles. I am not sure it was fully charged, though it shut off automatically. I think more testing is required. i better go for a ride.

Now.

You might think swapping batteries is a joke but I completed the 51st Virginia Grand Prix by swapping batteries. I rode a grueling 48miles on some gnarly trails, a good chunk of riders don't get this finisher pin.

Looks like next week we get to see what has been in the works with the Livewire Del Mar. From the drawings we have scene it will probably be a lower range flat track style bike. I'm just hoping they include either DC fast charging or level 2. If it's a level 1 bike, it's DOA in my opinion.

Congrats on the finish! How difficult is the battery swap?

Congrats on the finish and yes I still think battery swapping is a joke for the majority of people and there will never be wide spread battery swap stations in the us for the general public let alone motorcycles.

Well the LiveWire DelMar launched. First 100 reservations are sold out for Q2 2023 - roughly $17,699 for those.

According to the Electrek article it looks like ~$15k for the standard edition coming sometime next year.

I came across this funny bike

Sorry my pic foo sucks. Decent website tho.
Swingarm mounted motor
https://super73.com/c1x

I'm excited to see if they can pull this off. Super73 has been around for a few years and makes great pedal assist cool looking electric bikes. One thing to make a pedal assist electric bike, another to make a full on motorcycle.

Wow!

Seriously, this looks amazing.

Most electric bikes look awful. Really like the look of this one.

I like the specs on this, this would be a great city bike for someone without an utterly insane commute.

The price is nutty, but not utterly insane. It's $10K over a MT-07, which is (roughly) comparable bike. So, the prices still need to work their way down.

But I like it.

So is this Livewire, Harley Livewire?
