The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

On a brighter note, hockey returned to the Cow Palace tonight. Although in a 5-4 OT losing effort, it's still a great day for Bay Area hockey fans.

I'm soooo missing my Sharks. At least my A's are serving as a damn good distraction!

And as the first answer I would still celebrate a shortened Sharks cup just as much

I'll take bittersweet over bitter any day.

+1 a win is a win and all the other teams were subject to the same parameters. if it's half a season, it'd be like the old days in the 60s...almost like the Sharks winning as an original 6 team. I'd take it and run, myself.

I'm both mad and sad about the lockout. I imagine the sport taking a critical hit if this lasts all season in viewership in the US. NHLs main competitor the NBA just had the big star win (LeBron) and the Lakers are going to be in the mix too, which will boost their casual-fan ratings. All that positive momentum, from the Winter Classics to Crosby winning the cup, etc...all erased and backtracked. It's infuriating.

It's ultimately the owners' faults for paying the players what they pay. They were not forced to shell out that money. But the reality is, they are indeed in position to collude with each other to get players like Kovalchuk and Nash to move to teams with more powerful owners (northeast-coast), give them exorbitant contracts that the more salary-conscious owners can't or refuse to pay, then turn around and cut those same contracts 25% once the moves are finalized. To me, this is merely a clever way for the powerful owners to circumvent the salary cap that they themselves ratified. They want their team to win and be profitable and screw the overall product. But it is what it is: they hold the cards and have the power to assert their will upon the situation.

official NHL announcement of cancellation of it's actually rather 82 regular season games through 10/24 thus far: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=642785

that's interesting that nhl.com would report that they couldn't play without a collective bargaining agreement. When in all actuality (and from what I've understood from their own words) the previous CBA included a clause that if a new CBA wasn't ratified then they could play under the previous agreement until a new CBA was put in place.

either way: sucks donkey balls.

I've got giants postseason, and a fucking good 9ers team. God imagine if I didn't....

KHL game airing.right now on the deuce. Ovid and Charra are the big names. The Mullet and Steve Levy are announcing. Kinda nice hearing familiar voices and seeing hockey.

ehh apparantly OV's shooting percentage is like 6% in the KHL

Coming out of the last lockout, ESPN offered the NHL 0 dollars to broadcast the NHL - that's ZERO dollars - fees to be paid only based on ratings, which we all know are miniscule in the US.

Do you think the NHLPA's actions (not approving NHL's final offer) resulting in the last lockout helped or hurt the NHL's value? They drove the ship right into the ground - making their TV product literally worthless on the US sports scene.

The NHL (& NHLPA) was just lucky that OLN / VS / NBCSN threw them a bone to get on any cable channel.

And it appears that the NHLPA is doing the EXACT same thing again, acting like they are more important than the game itself. If they are actually contemplating asking to get rid of the cap...?? what planet are they on?! - they're even dumber than I first thought.

I'm already going to the Bulls' home opener tomorrow. Should make for some exciting times.
