The Official 2017/2018 NFL Thread

At what point if you are Eli do you request to be taken out as the starter? Go through all the practices but don't take the damage of the game for a year. Be back in '18 rested and ready.

:laughing

and Brandon Marshall out for the season. 3rd starting Giants WR this year. and with no running game and a shitty o-line...faaack.

They're tanking for one of the high QB draft picks this next draft... :x

They drafted Webb from Cal, who did pretty well given the Bears team around him at the time, does he get a chance to play, or do they ride that horse named Eli... to the glue factory?

They just better stay away from Rosen. He's SFs. NY can have Darnold.

:laughing

We get it, you like Rosen! :thumbup

I saw that Darnold has said he won't declare early, he loves being in college. Can't blame him, who wouldn't being at USC, a star QB with a bright future ($$$), and the toast of Tinseltown? But, he better look at Matt Leinart as a cautionary tale.... :laughing

(I know, Leinart's doing alright as a broadcaster.)

Leinart still went 10th overall, it just turns out he wasn't all that good in the NFL.

Since all the insane rookie contracts went away, staying another year doesn't really hurt players unless they have a terrible season. Darnold is super young though so he could benefit from another year in college.

I think USC QB's tend to be overrated a bit (Mark Sanchez, Rob Johnson come to mind as well).

The only QB that has had any enduring career in the NFL lately is Palmer. (I don't ever remember seeing an SC game that Cassel actually played in.)

USC seems to produce QBs with a lot of potential but light on NFL prowess

edit: Palmer is probably the best one. but he's only a good regular season QB, in between the 20s.

Joe Staley showing his age on that sack he gave up :(

Every time I think the Niners can't make more mistakes..... :(

I just watched the two sacks and having trouble seeing him as the only reason particularly on the first one. Hoyer couldn’t step up because hide missed his assignment. The second one Hoyer didn’t take advantage of the pocket on the left when the end/LB took a deep rush. He should have just stepped up and to the left. Staley looked beat but wasn’t.

He’s slowed a bit. He’s still a solid left tackle.

:laughing

Surprised Marinovich didn’t make the list of SC duds.

I thought about including him, but it was so long ago... after watching the ''30 for 30'' featuring him and his dad I kinda feel for the guy and hope he can live a happy life at some point. The doc should be used as a cautionary tale to ''sports dads'' everywhere.

Step aside from the addiction issues with Todd, he's just a guy that wants to surf and paint, and not meant for the family business, like Fredo in ''The Godfather''.

agree he's still a stud, has been for a decade now.

i agree the first one was not on him. it's the second one i was referring too. that deep rush was too fast for Hoyer to recognize and react.

watch Hoyers head, it goes from right side of field and clicks to middle right before he gets wrapped up in barely 2 seconds. Staley just got beat badly on that one as he chased the rusher

only way that's not all on Staley is if Hoyer was in too deep of a drop for what the play call was. that, we'll never know, but we can guess a deep drop was appropriate considering it was on 3-and-long

i'll say it again though, Staley isn't bad. he just showed his age on that one sack. younger Staley woulda kept up with that charge or had the foot speed to get in front of it

Agreed. Take another look though. Post snap Hoyer should have known there was a huge opening to step into on the left. A QB has to be able to help the line set the blocks sometimes.

I didn’t see the rest of the game. Was Staley solid throughout and just got edged that on time or did he have other slips?

yeah that's a possibility but we'll never know what the play call accounted for vs Hoyers awareness/skill level

Staley was generally his solid self. it was just this on play that stood out to me.

I guess putting it into that context me saying he's showing his age is premature if it's just one example i'm citing. more likely it was the play call/qb

but still.... hard to ignore the speed that beat him was something he used to handle - even on bad playcalls

I'm starting to worry we lost El-Dirty. I hope he didn't self Immolate and try to take the rest of the Bay Area down with him.
