The Ultimate DRZ-400SM Thread - Mods, Tips and Tricks

Anyone have a set of 21" & 18" DRZ wheels they would care to sell me?

Mine now needs to do double duty as a dirt bike too.

For those looking for the Thumper Talk FCR MX kit, they got 8 of them in today (see email below):

As of NOW, we have 8 ThumperTalk FCR 39mm Carb Kits in stock, ready for shipping. As you know, they are about as rare as a politician with common sense, so get em' while they last! Here's the link:

DRZ newbie

Why does it wheelie? Does it get more HP?

The FCR add's a couple HP, but the reral advantage is the speed at which it accelerates now.
The stock carb is a 'vacuum' actuated carb, so no matter how hard you twist the throttle, you still have to wait for Wide Open Throttle until enough vacuum is generated to lift the slide all the way up.
With the FCR, it has an accelerator pump, so as soon as you twist the throttle to Wide Open, you have WOT.
MUCH better acceleration, better, faster response, more power.

Yep, exactly right. The FCR significantly improves throttle response. At 270 pounds, this thing will still power right up in first and will come up in second with no clutch and just a bit of a weight shift. Essentially, it trades a bit of fuel economy for a few smiles/mile. :teeth

I have a full T4 system on mine, and it is pretty loud. I do, however, have a slightly more restrictive tip than yours, from the looks of it. Here's a pic, I'll let you decide. Maybe it's just shaped differently.

Do you use a 41 teeth rear sprocket?

I picked up the same bike, 07 with the same t4 pipe. Yes it's hella loud. I wear ear plugs on long rides.

I am still running stock gearing, as I want to keep it as versatile as I can. If I'm stuck on the superslab for any period of time, I want to be able to cruise at 75 without the thing feeling like it's falling apart. Conversely, I don't want the gearing too tall to make it difficult to get around the tight twisty go-kart tracks, etc.

Recommended tires for SM

Ok so I am burning through my stock Dunlops, any suggestions on a good tire for 400SM's? I commute mostly on the freeway and occasionally do some back road twisties w/ an occasional long distance ride. As far as percentage I do 80% commute, 15% twisties, 5% long distance.

Here is the setup on my '07: 3x3 mod, stock filter, Yosh RS2 CF full exhaust, JD jet kit (needle 2 position, pilot 1 size up, 150 main, 2 1/2 on air screw)

Can somebody post the very basic mods? Like jetting settings, 3X3 airbox mod, popluar exhaust choices, etc?

There are a lot of different ways you can go, but I have been pretty happy with a combination of a Maxxis rain tire (6117?) on the front and a Bridgestone BT-016 on the rear. The front is nice and sticky, and handles crappy roads and smooth pavement very well. The rear is nice because it is a tri-compound tire. Essentially, the middle is hard (longevity for commuting use) but the outsides are softer, for the twisties. It's not perfect, but I like it.

Whats a good set of tires for the drzsm?

What are you using for your SM? I can find front tires but the rears are difficult because of the size. Anyone have good experience on a particular brand tire combo?

Has anyone on here done the O-ring mod and removed the pilot air jet on their FCR's? Ive been reading about this on TT and its said to get rid of some of the hesitation seen with the FCR's running on 440s. I was thinking of doing this to mine and play around fine tuning the jetting a bit more this weekend. Idle isnt quite as smooth as i would like still.

TT O-Ring mod post link.

Just wondering what others experiences have been with this set of mods.

I did it on a buddies FCR, and it DID make a positive difference.
You have to remember though, this only works on the 'newer' FCR carbs. I have an older one on my 2006 (bought the carb in 2007), and it doesn't have the same PAJ as the 'newer' ones.
Somewhere in the TT discussion, there is a way to tell if you have a newer one or an older one.
But it DOES make an improvement.

I did it and the results were VERY favorable. As has been said, this only works on the newer ones (I think ~ '05 and newer, but not sure on the year)
