The Ultimate DRZ-400SM Thread - Mods, Tips and Tricks

Everything I've read suggests the DRZ's stock tank should hold something like 2.6 gallons. When I went riding this past weekend, I ran it out of gas and then drained the reserve. I barely made it to a gas station before it died, and then filled it as far as I could and it only took ~1.5 gallons.

Anyone have any insight on this? 85 mile range without jetting or exhaust modification seems unusually restrictive.

That sounds about right.

You probably still had some gas in it before you filled up.

As for range, it really_really_really depends on your weight and body shape.

I used to get around 70 miles before flipping it over to reserve.

You may have a plugged charcoal cannister...wheelies and overfilling cause it to plug w fuel and then you no longer have a tank vent: out of fuel.
To test open and close the fuel cap and it will start up. I hear some folks take the fuel vapor system off but can't confirm..........:teeth
I always got around 100 miles before hitting reserve...untill the fcr went on that is! :laughing

That really fits. I'll definitely look into this. Thanks!

do you know the right way to fill up a motorcycle gas tank? in other words... pull back the foreskin, stick the tip just barely in, and start pumping. if you stick it all the way in, you won't get a full tank.

Not my DRZ, but some new stuff installed:

Aprilia Mirrors--much, much, much nicer looking than stock!

SME Axle sliders with built-in rear stand spool. Super trick!

What are the details on the Ape mirrors and how much did they cost?

sweet mirrors!!!!!!!!!!!

can I see the other side on the stand, how does it clear the axle nut?

It clears it just fine.

BUT!!!

Due to some tolerances - as you saw with Cain's bike, the axle doesn't exactly slide out from the axle block. Remember, we had to pound it in. I didn't have this problem with my SXV or any other bike with the same SME sliders.

I'll have to take everything apart again and maybe dremel the inside of the block to create more clearance. :x

Back to the throttle tube mod.

With the older '05 R6 throttle tube and the '04 R1 tube. You had to trim a bit of the tube to fit, and to me the throttle wasn't that much shorter than the stock tube.

With Yamaha of San Jose's recommendation, I bought the '06+ R6 tube.

With the '06 tube PN# 2C0-26240-00

The tube fits without trimming, and the throttle is like 1/6th turn. Very quick.

Spoke too soon on the '06+ throttle tube. W/o trimming some of the tabs, I was not hitting the throttle stop on my FCR carb.

I had to trim a little on each side of the tube (as instructed earlier in the thread) -- adjust the throttle cables on the carb, in order to get WOT.

:)

We LOVE WOT, dont we!

So how much rotation now?

She's gonna look pretty(er) with new shoes.
